Omurice! Smile Dec 18, 2013

Kazokutei is one of Osaka’s most well known brands for its high quality handmade udon. However, it was a relatively hot day and my buddy and I decided to order the same item.

The Tofu Hamburger Combo Omurice ($12.90) looked really appetizing from the menu and we both got the same thing. I really enjoyed the french onion soup it comes with, seasoned to perfection and really opens up all appetite. The tofu hamburger was also tender and moist while the fries were not greasy and really yummy. The star of the dish, the omurice, was amazing as well but I wished that its thicker than it is.

Overall, really enjoyed my time here and would want to try out their udon next time.

Hot Pot Udon! Smile Dec 18, 2013

Ichiban Sushi is one of my favourite casual dining restaurants to go to whenever I just wanted somewhere simple and convenient while at the same time being able to try out different food. Their vast menu selection always leave me spoilt for choice and I always have something different to order.

This time around, I ordered their Nabeyaki Udon ($11.90), which is basically a hot pot styled udon, with seafood and vegetables cooked in a hot pot. The tempura shrimp tasted amazing after soaking in the deliciously flavoured soup. The fresh udon was also springy and filling. Love the soup base the most!

One of my many favourite hangout places include Men-ichi Japanese Ramen. Have ordered their Kyoto Chashu Ramen, Teriyaki Chicken Salad, Pan-Fried Chicken Gyoza & California Handroll. A casual feast to share between 2 people!

Their tonkotsu soup are always rich and wonderful with right balance of pork and chicken porks boiled for over 12 hours. Their handmade noodles are also springy and light without any hint of extra dough presence. Love the quality ingredients they use for all their food items as well. The service are also amazing such that its easy to get staff's attention when you need anything, water are also always refilled efficiently. Truly a great casual dining place to go if you stay near Northpoint!

Ramen in Boat Quay! Smile Dec 18, 2013

Chanced upon this Japanese restaurant that looks pretty authentic from the outside, figured that we would just have our lunch here. The interior decor was also quite authentic looking where most of the furnishings were made from wood, with a warm inviting ambience as well.

Ordered the Chashu Ramen and as much as I'm not a fan of hard boiled egg, the rest of the ramen weren't bad. The broth may be light but the flavour is adequate, the chashu slices were generous along with really fresh handmade springy noodles.

The Katsu Curry Rice was really flavourful, served hot and tasted very old-Japanese, which was great because most of the curry rice you find elsewhere in town usually taste more modern and local, if you know what I mean. The rice was also fluffy and light which compliments the rich curry gravy really well. Love it.

Overall, this ramen place may have good ratings but it's not one of those places that I would plan to visit on any typical days, unless I happen to be around that area again. I paid around $20 after GST and service charge.

Streeeats! OK Dec 18, 2013

My first visit to Streats Hong Kong Cafe was several years ago and my favourite from this restaurant was always the curry chicken with bread. However, standards have dropped down the years and I haven't been visiting it for awhile.

So not long ago my buddy and I decided to give it a go again. We ordered the Chicken Chop Fried Rice to share. Most of the food here are priced reasonably below $12 and I believe this was around $8-9. However, I wasn't impressed by its portion, neither was the taste distinctive enough to make me like it. It only reminded me of something I can easily whip up at home considering that I'm not really a good cook.

Then we had the Fried Carrot Cake, this wasn't a disappointment because it actually tasted really yummy! However, it's quite different compared to the usual carrot cake we can get at hawker centres or food court, there's no egg and it's kind of spicy for people who can't take spicy food. Would be better if they place the chilli separately for diners to mix on their own. Other than that, it's not bad.

Overall, we still are not sure whether we would return again, as standards still are not matching up to my first impression of this place many years ago. Although they do have new installations of televisions and better service, there's more to the restaurant than just pure ambience and service as long as menu is concerned.

Spending per head: Approximately $10(Tea)
