Was craving for something warm and spicy on a rainy day and decided to head down to Northpoint's Dong Dae Mun for their Spicy Rice Cakes ($3.50)! The price seemed to have increased as compared to last year when it was still $3 but I guess it's alright since you don't get to find any spicy rice cakes as convenient as from this place, unless you prepare it your own I guess?

Since my boyfriend was hungry and he don't take spicy, I got him the Chicken Meatball ($3 for 2) which were fried nicely but perhaps needed more flavouring because it's pretty average on its own, but overall I would definitely return for more spicy rice cakes!

Average at Tangs Market! OK Dec 17, 2013

Categories : Food Court

This was my first time dining at Tangs Market, and I've decided to go the Char Kuey Tiao ($5), the stall is pretty attractive as compared to the rest and queue was reasonably long too.

The dish is nicely flavoured but the taste wasn't exceptional as compared to other places I've tried. For its portion, the price is a tad bit expensive but it's probably due to the rental.

Overall, I may not return because I feel like it would be wiser to spend that same amount somewhere else in Orchard as well.

Sushi at Westgate! Smile Dec 17, 2013

Categories : Japanese | Sushi/Sashimi

Visited Westgate recently with my buddy and our main and only goal on that day was Sushi Express! Thankfully for us, it was still early around 5pm so the queue wasn't ridiculously long as always. There was still a queue of around 10 people but it was quite efficient as we only had to wait for 10 minutes.

The large menu display outside showcase more than 60 variety of Nigiri sushi selection along with side dishes and desserts, all at a really pocket-friendly price of $1.50! Ginger and wasabi are free which is normal but tea in fresh tea bags are complimentary as well! That's impressive. We also found out that they were having new opening promotion at $1 for each plate on that day! That's crazily amazing!

The restaurant layout is pretty modern and chic with red as the striking element that attracts customers in the basement of Westgate. Space is optimized to its fullest so it's only an arm-to-arm distance but for its price, its understandable.

Upon sitting, we were handed this slip of paper which states our time limit, now I get why its called Sushi Express! We managed to keep to our time limit pretty well because the queue gradually became really long!

I'm not sure whether we were just unlucky on that day but most of the items are the same, I didn't see many of the things I wanted to try as shown on the menu display. Perhaps its because we were seated at the end of the conveyor belt and most of the better items were taken before us.

Some of the plates we got for ourselves are shown below, didn't snap a lot of the food because we were keeping in mind the time limit and wanted to enjoy every minute we had there. But I did get to try some really great items like sliced abalone, the sashimi were quite fresh and sweet too. I also love the flavour of their sushi rice because despite its price, the quality is there. The desserts tasted average, but I guess its reasonable because after all it's still a sushi place.

For 2 person, we enjoyed ourselves and managed to build a really nice tower from 18 plates.

Overall, the service was great and every plate was worth more than its price. We should have had more since that's a lucky $1 day. But I would definitely return again for other $1.50 days as well, provided I visit early before the queue gets rough.

Spending per head: Approximately $10(Dinner)

Starbucks to Go! Smile Dec 17, 2013

Categories : American | Coffee

Had a chance to visit the new mall Westgate and the first thing I saw was Starbucks! It happened to be on 12 December when they were having the Starbucks 1-for-1 promotion. The queue wasn't as long as I thought as it was a late weekday afternoon. I love Starbucks to go.

Decided to go with the Toffee Nut Latte ($7.80) and Cranberry White Chocolate Mocha ($8.40), both cold, venti sized with sweetened whipped cream. Although the latter looks amazing and is usually more expensive, the toffee nut latte has an exceptional taste that makes you want to drink more, I really miss it.

Although I doubt that they'll be holding any 1-for-1 anytime soon, I will definitely return to try out their Peppermint mocha soon before Christmas.

Royal Elegance at its Best! Smile Dec 16, 2013
Share on TwitterShare on Facebook
Categories : French | High Tea | Desserts and Cakes | Brunch

Antoinette is a Parisian pastry and tea salon place that offers some of the most excellent selection of classical French desserts. Besides the lovely and luxurious presentation of cakes and pastries, the restaurant's ala carte menu also provides diners with an extensive variety of savoury dishes going from all-day breakfast, starters, main courses, pastas, sandwiches, crepes and coffee to a wide selection of aromatic tea!

Ever since I've read tons of great reviews about this place, I finally got a chance to visit one of its outlet at Mandarin Gallery. My first impression of Antoinette was great, the exterior design was amazing, displaying the vintage French outlook that can hardly be found anywhere else in this country.
Lovely Retail Section

Although it was a late afternoon on Monday, the queue seems to always be never ending. We've waited roughly around 5 minutes, we were lucky and were led to this 2 table seating with a really comfortable European styled cushion.

The interior decorations were really lovely as well, full of vintage elegance that perhaps for a split second you may actually think that you could be sitting in a corner shop in a small town area in France.

I always believe that interior design is key to all customers' hearts because it does a lot to adjust their mood before they read the menu. At Antoinette, it was truly an inviting environment that prepares you to enjoy their exquisite French fare.

So once seated, the menu we got at the table were the ala carte menu, we weren't sure whether to order from the counter directly or to ask the waiter, but since we wanted to choose the desserts up close, we personally went to the counter to order ourselves. Their cosy retail section showcase some of the loveliest pieces of art it's hard to not want everything!
Dessert Selection

Dessert Selection

I've got myself their signature, Antoinette ($10). This is basically a chocolate biscuit with earl grey tea crumbles covered in milk chocolate mousse infused with earl grey tea, coated with dark chocolate mousse cremeux then carefully topped with raspberry coulis. Before I've had this, I always thought that the raspberry coulis was a hard coated chocolate, but you were actually supposed to slice it so that every part of the cake would get some raspberry flavour as enhancement. The dessert was really rich and true to its price, there's hardly any flaw but you may want to get someone to share it with because it can make you really full.

My friend got herself a beautiful piece called Charlotte ($9), which is a kirsch brandy infused fresh strawberry finger biscuit with strawberry compote, the Bavarian vanilla cream and Chantilly cream in between gave the dessert a great texture and the ribbon that it came with made it seem like a sweet Christmas gift, really interesting!

Honestly, we wanted to get the Cafe Antoinette Creme to pair it with the desserts, but heard that their coffee machine broke down and my friend don't like tea, so we had ice water instead. But because of that, the total price came out pretty good! It was interesting because instead of a bill holder like other restaurants, the bill came in an exquisite European style container. This actually says a lot about how meticulous the owner is to let customers experience the Antoinette way from start to end.

Overall, I am really impressed with Antoinette. Although the service here wasn't exceptional, but from the fine and elegant furnishing to beautifully crafted cakes, they were enough to make this trip a memorable experience. I can't wait to try out the savoury dishes the next time I visit. After all, this restaurant definitely is the place to go if you want a short getaway to France without getting the air ticket!
