Ramen in Boat Quay! Smile Dec 18, 2013

Categories : Japanese | Ramen

Chanced upon this Japanese restaurant that looks pretty authentic from the outside, figured that we would just have our lunch here. The interior decor was also quite authentic looking where most of the furnishings were made from wood, with a warm inviting ambience as well.

Ordered the Chashu Ramen and as much as I'm not a fan of hard boiled egg, the rest of the ramen weren't bad. The broth may be light but the flavour is adequate, the chashu slices were generous along with really fresh handmade springy noodles.

The Katsu Curry Rice was really flavourful, served hot and tasted very old-Japanese, which was great because most of the curry rice you find elsewhere in town usually taste more modern and local, if you know what I mean. The rice was also fluffy and light which compliments the rich curry gravy really well. Love it.

Overall, this ramen place may have good ratings but it's not one of those places that I would plan to visit on any typical days, unless I happen to be around that area again. I paid around $20 after GST and service charge.

Streeeats! OK Dec 18, 2013

My first visit to Streats Hong Kong Cafe was several years ago and my favourite from this restaurant was always the curry chicken with bread. However, standards have dropped down the years and I haven't been visiting it for awhile.

So not long ago my buddy and I decided to give it a go again. We ordered the Chicken Chop Fried Rice to share. Most of the food here are priced reasonably below $12 and I believe this was around $8-9. However, I wasn't impressed by its portion, neither was the taste distinctive enough to make me like it. It only reminded me of something I can easily whip up at home considering that I'm not really a good cook.

Then we had the Fried Carrot Cake, this wasn't a disappointment because it actually tasted really yummy! However, it's quite different compared to the usual carrot cake we can get at hawker centres or food court, there's no egg and it's kind of spicy for people who can't take spicy food. Would be better if they place the chilli separately for diners to mix on their own. Other than that, it's not bad.

Overall, we still are not sure whether we would return again, as standards still are not matching up to my first impression of this place many years ago. Although they do have new installations of televisions and better service, there's more to the restaurant than just pure ambience and service as long as menu is concerned.

Spending per head: Approximately $10(Tea)

Chicken at a Fish Place OK Dec 18, 2013
Categories : Seafood

Headed down to Naked Fish Shoppe one day during school's break hours because my friends and I were all tired of school food. This restaurant pretty much serve a vast selection of fish and seafood prepared in different ways, from deep-fried, grilled, pan-fried, baked or poached. I have came here several times before and although the fish and chips may be affordable on the student's menu, I didn't enjoy it.

So I've ordered the Chicken Baked Rice this time around and found that it's much better than the fish. Although the taste of cheese may get tiring after half the dish, the chicken portion was generous and were nicely seasoned and grilled that actually reminded me of the Singapore's chicken rice taste, in a cheese baked rice form. But as compared to other places like food court, this is considered quite average.

Overall, service was always bad here and it may probably because business was always brisk from all the students' visits. If I were to ever need to visit this place for lunch again, I may try to give their fish and chips another chance. Otherwise, I'll just stick to this.

Tampopo! OK Dec 18, 2013

Categories : Japanese

I'm not a ramen expert but I am an all-time all-rounded Japanese food lover and have huge love over ramen. Heard that Tampopo is popular for their black pig's ramen and hence I visited there not long ago to try out their Black Pig's King Ramen. I'm unsure of the price but it's definitely cheaper than many ramen places out there. To my disappointment, I liked everything except for its broth, and ramen is known for its broth. Perhaps I went there on a wrong day but both my buddy and I didn't like the light broth that lacked complexity in flavour. However, the portion was generous and the ingredients used were of high quality. The noodle was springly and the pork were sliced and seasoned to the optimum taste.

We also ordered the Teriyaki Chicken to share, I can't remember the price but I remembered that this was too expensive for its portion, almost $7 if I'm not wrong. Definitely something that can be skipped.

Overall, it was a relatively average experience, but I like to believe that its just one of wrong days. I may visit the outlet at Liang Court next time to hopefully get a better experience.

Basil Mania! OK Dec 18, 2013
Categories : Italian | Pasta | Halal

PastaMania is one of my least favourite places to go but this doesn't mean its bad, I just find that I always have very average experience here. So whenever I have to dine here, it's because my friend wants to.

I don't enjoy the pasta selection so I simply went with the Basil Chicken Aglio, she had her choice of Linguine while I had my Penne. The pasta was cooked well with good texture that's neither too over nor under cooked. The sauce was a tad bit oily but the basil flavour is there. I didn't like the minced chicken that well because it was quite salty.

Overall, as much as I agree that this place is perfect for decent pasta at affordable prices, its not my kind of place to go.
