Nice & Budget Italian Cuisine  OK Jan 21, 2014

Categories : Italian | Middle Eastern/Mediterranean | Pasta

I came across Platypus Kitchen on OpenRice and saw pretty good reviews, hence I decided to try out for myself! It was a weekday dinner with my friend and the restaurant was relatively quiet. Their menu offer a wide selection of pasta and if you pay for the set meals, will cost around $19.90 (bef gst). For the set meals, you get to pick a Pasta, Tea/Coffee & Soup or Salad.

My friend chose the 'Black & White, Scallop & Crab', while I opted for the 'Spicy Diablo Crab & Prawn'. We got a Soup of the Day ~ Wild Mushroom Soup + Salad together. When our pasta arrived at our table, i realised that the portions were quite substantial! The Wild Mushroom Soup contained lots of garlic & I found it overpowering! The salad was refreshing. For the 'Black & White, Scallop & Crab', it's Interwoven Egg and Squid-Ink Tagliolini with crabs and scallops in white wine consomme. If it is squid-ink pasta alone, i probably won't dare to try. But this is rather interesting & the taste was good!

The Spicy Diablo Crab & Prawn is Egg Tagliolini with prawns and crab claw tossed in a spicy egg sauce. The presentation of the dish is nice as you see the whole chunk of crab meat piled up! It's slightly spicy but not over spicy, it may be too mild for those who love their chilli! When i compared these two main dish, i prefer the first one.

We also had Illy's Coffee and a Lychee Ice Tea to wrap up our meals.

Pretty Good Ramen @ Budget Price Smile Jan 15, 2014

Categories : Japanese | Ramen

I noticed more & more of Menya Musashi outlets expanding & I'm really curious how good is their ramen. Finally, today I passed by an outlet at VivoCity and decided to lunch with my friend. We got a table pretty fast and we ordered the same type of ramen ~ White Tora Cha Shu Ramen. Their set meals allow you to pick from a selection of sides, hence I opted for the Bokuto Gyoza while my friend ordered the Fried Chicken (Tori Karrage).

When our ramen arrived, it's quite a big serving! I'm glad to see that as I was really famished at that point in time! The first thing i noticed was the nice & runny Tamago ~ oh, looks oishii! The Cha Shu were rather big & thick slices as well; my only lament would be the Cha Shu were not tender enough. The White Tora soup base was not bad as well.

As for the side dishes, the Bokuto Gyoza were not the crispy kind but ok in taste. The Fried Chicken was surprisingly good, tender & not oily! Overall, I find that their set meals are a good deal and comes in a sizable portion! (If not enough, you could also top up the ramen!)

Recommended Dish(es):  White Tora Cha Shu Ramen

Spending per head: Approximately $19(Lunch)

Cosy Cafe with Nice Pastry Smile Dec 26, 2013

As I had marked this Little Prince Café as my To-Eat place for awhile, I decided we should go check it out! However, it started to rain & we went out with our umbrellas. We boarded the MRT to Farrer Park & after checking the map, we walked down the streets to look for 62 Somme Road. This is really my 1st foray into this area. Finally after 10 mins, we caught sight of the not so prominent café.

There were 4 other guests in the café when we reached. After we settled down & decided on our pastry & drinks, the others left the café. Hence, the whole café seems to belong to us! Thou theme cafes are very common overseas, especially like Japan & Taiwan, the growth in Sg is much slower. I was surprised that the Little Prince Café turned out to be smaller than I thought, thanks to the brilliant optical illusion drawing of the staircase! The whole place is hand-painted by the café's owner & we were impressed! Her love for Little Prince can be felt here ~~

We didn't opt for their signature strawberry roll as we find that it's rather small. My friend chose the Passion Fruit cake, while I had the Strawberry Marshmallow Cake. For drinks, we ordered the Cappuccino & Ice Rambutan Tea. Both of us enjoy eating the cakes, thou I do not like Passion Fruit, I sampled a mouth of my friend's order ~ the Passion Fruit flavour is very strong! Accordingly to my friend, the Cappuccino tastes good too! We were told that just before we arrived, the café was packed. So being late turned out to be a blessing!

I first tried Arnor Crepes (阿諾可麗餅) at Taipei's 師大夜市 & is excited to know there's a franchise in SG now! I caught sight of their stall located at the basement of City Square Mall while shopping. I had wanted to try their signature crepe ~ Arnor Signature Mango Sundae but they had ran out of mangoes for the night. Hence, we settled for their Fruit Paradise Sundae ($7.90) and topped up $2 for their Premium Macadamia Nut Ice-cream at the recommendation of the boss.

The Fruit Paradise served here is exactly the same size as I had in Taipei! Mind you, it's big & good enough to share between my friend & I. The fruits include slices of banana, peaches & kiwi, together with the Signature Round Biscuit from Arnor + 2 choco sticks. My friend & I really love the Macadamia Nut ice-cream which is very rich & creamy, heard that only Sg use this premium ice-cream thou.

Currently Arnor Crepes is having a soft launch, we were lucky to get a free quarter size Belgian Waffle with Lava Brownie to try, which is their Signature item as well (the full set will cost $5.90 + $2). The waffle remained crispy even after some time on the table, I can count it as the Best Waffle in SG now!

On their menu, I also noticed they sell savoury crepes & I was told that they are having Turkey Ham Crepe for this Christmas Season! I really couldn't stomach more as I had dinner prior to this & the crepe + waffle all together were really filling! They also just added salad (including potato salad) to their menu today.

Next round, I shall go there earlier to try their Mango Sundae!

Budget Japanese Set Meals Smile Dec 08, 2013

Categories : Japanese

I was wondering what my friends & I should have for dinner after we met up at Plaza Singapura. In my memory, there were no particular restaurant that I like here. When my friend, C mentioned that we could try Hifumi as she had eaten here before, we just followed her choice. The sample sets outside the restaurant look not bad. smile

As we were there way before dinner time starts, we took our own sweet time to check out the free flow appetizer bar. Actually, none of the appetizer looks appealing to me! But after my friends got some of the sweet potatoes and mini tako-balls, they were not too bad. By topping up $1.99 each on top of our set meals, we get to have unlimited drinks as well. There were a selection of premium tea bags, coffee & soft drinks.

Each of us ordered a different set to try & our sets were priced at $12.99 each. We had a Saba Shioyaki, Paper Baked Chicken & a Chicken Namban Set (fresh marinated chicken with Fresh Tartar). Each set comes with a bowl of rice and a miso soup as well. I'm glad that I made the right choice to order the Chicken Namban as after trying my friends' orders, I still preferred mine. The Chicken Namban is nicely marinated & tender, coated in the batter.

After we finished our main course, we had some Chawanmushi from the appetizer counter & some macha mochi desserts as well. While we were chatting away, a waitress came to inform us that our time is UP! Seriously, we have no idea that there is a time limit in the restaurant. It would be better if their service staff had informed us upfront before sitting us. Overall, the food were not too bad for a budget Japanese meal.
