Yummy Gyozas! Smile Dec 02, 2013
Categories : Japanese

You probably wouldn't believe how I came to notice Osaka Ohsho, I was waiting for my bus after work & saw this double-decker bus carrying its advertisement! tongue Hence, I did my 'homework' on OpenRice to find out what are the recommended dishes.

I met up with my buddy at the Raffles City's Osaka Ohsho to check out the food. I remembered that I saw this famous brand in Osaka City but I didn't try it then. As my buddy was not too hungry, we only ordered the Fried Rice + Gyoza Set ($11.90). I tried asking if we could add on a couple more pieces to the 6 pieces in the set but can't.

My set arrived pretty fast & the aroma of the fried rice smells good. The gyozas were nice, with sufficient juice of the meat retained & no residual oil were left on our plate. I found the set portion is sufficient as I finished up the fried rice. For a simple & budget set meal, I will recommend Osaka Ohsho when you have a craving for gyozas!

A Must Try for Hotdog Lovers! Smile Nov 28, 2013
Share on TwitterShare on Facebook
I noticed this newly opened gourmet hotdog kiosk ~ The Mustard Incident at CK Tangs basement when it started operations 2 weeks ago. I was attracted to the aroma of the hotdog that were being prepared by their chef thru' a see-thru glass. The bright yellow signage together with a tongue-in-cheek name provides visual appeal too! Well, we all will auto link mustard sauce to hotdogs right?

Today I finally got to try out two of its gourmet hotdogs, namely the Hawt Dog ($9) & The Frankenstein ($10). The Hawt Dog is basically a spicy pork sausage dressed in TMI hot sauce, tomato & onion relish. Thou I have a low threshold for spiciness, I could still manage to eat this Hawt Dog without drowning water! Maybe for those who really love spicy, they need to order extra hot sauce!
The Frankenstein

The Frankenstein

Next, I was told that their signature Must Try hotdog would be The Frankenstein! Wow, just hearing the name already made me curious how it would be like? After some time, the piping hot Frankenstein was dished out. It comprised of 50% beef & 50% pork sausage, wrapped up by a streaky bacon. TMI hot sauce, TMI beanless chili & sautéed onions were piled on top! Wow! If you are feeling extremely hungry, I am certain this will be very filling! I love how the two types of hotdogs goes together. It's an ingenious idea to wrap them with the streaky bacon to make sure they don't fall apart easily! I like how attentive the staff were as they helped us to cut the hotdog for sharing.

Well, if you do not mind standing at the few tables available to enjoy the gourmet hotdogs, I find that TMI is really a worthy try if ever you have a hotdog craving as it is conveniently located & it certainly makes a very fulfilling lunch/tea break/dinner or even supper!

Simply Heavenly Mille Crepes!  Smile Nov 24, 2013
Share on TwitterShare on Facebook
Categories : American | Café | Desserts and Cakes

I had marked down Lady M Confections as my Must Try dessert place before it was officially opened at Marina Square! After 2 months wait, I finally got to try it with my buddy today. We are both cheesecake lovers!

Lady M's popularity can be seen by the queue outside & we joined its queue at around 9pm. There were 3 groups of people ahead of us & we were glad that we got into the café after 10mins. The whole café is generally bright with its clean & no fuss décor which is pure white with orange ambient lights. I noticed that the tables were all space apart to allow ample personal space. My friend & I got a table at the end of the café which was abit dim thou.

As we browsed the menu, I set my mind to try Lady M's signature Mille Crepes, which feature no less than 20 layers of paper-thin handmade crepes filled with light pastry cream. The waiter told us that they had ran out of the Strawberry Mille Crepes & Mango Cake! What a pity! Cos we thought of ordering the strawberry version too! Hence, my friend settled for the Strawberry Shortcake instead. We also ordered a Cranberry juice.

It took awhile for our cakes to arrive & upon trying a bite of the original Mille Crepes, I could feel the fresh cream melting in my mouth & it's not too sweet. Perfect! It takes a lot of effort to prepare a Mille Crepes, hence it is slightly more expensive than the usual cheesecake - $7.50. I also like the slightly burnt caramelised end of the cake which compliment the light cream very well.

I also tried the Strawberry Shortcake which oozes a soft, fluffy texture; with slices of strawberries on top & in-between the cake. However, I find that the strawberries are abit sour which I would prefer the sweeter ones! But my friend likes it. The Cranberry juice was ok & refreshing.

Overall, the service was good & staff will address the customer by name when presenting the bill. The Mille Crepes are simply heavenly and we will surely return again!

First Taste of Banh Mi! Smile Nov 21, 2013
Share on TwitterShare on Facebook
Categories : Vietnamese

All along I only know Vietnam cuisine for its famous beef pho & spring rolls, till curiosity of the perpetual long queue at Nam Nam caught my attention. Whenever I passed by this outlet during lunch hour, I will see people queuing for the Vietnam style baguette. I decided I gotta try its Grilled Chicken with Chicken Pate Banh Mi one day!

Today was really lucky as my colleague & I saw that there were not many people waiting for a table & we got in pretty fast! Banh Mi actually refers to all kinds of bread but it usually refers to the baguette which is commonly found in Vietnam, introduced during the French colonial period.

Oh my! When the baguette was presented to us in a basket, it's really huge! Thou it is a 6-inch one, but the bread definitely looks bigger than my usual Subway sandwich! The baguette was really nice, with a crispy outer crust & soft inside.

On closer scrutiny of the ingredients that goes into my Grilled Chicken, it contains Chinese parsley, shredded carrots, red chilli, cucumbers & a spread of chicken pate. I also put some dose of Vietnam chilli sauce to go with. Somehow, this combination is very satiating to my taste bud! It's really a surprise as this is my 1st time eating a Banh Mi! For $5.90, I would rate this as a really satisfying & filling lunch!

I shall return to try the beef pho lunch set next time.

Cantonese Fine Dining Dim Sum OK Nov 11, 2013
Share on TwitterShare on Facebook
Categories : Cantonese/Hong Kong | Hotel | Dim Sum | Seafood | Fine Dining

Being cantonese, we of course love dim sum! My brother picked Yan Ting @ St.Regis for his birthday lunch. Since our family have not try this restaurant before, we gamely went ahead to sample the dim sum.

The table set-up was exquisite with its golden cutlery set laid out & the attentive wait staff who helped to pull our chairs & laid the napkins on our laps. The whole ambience was quiet and not many diners. To kick-start, we had a pot of 香片chinese tea.

We selected 10 different dim sum dishes to try. The first to arrive was our Century Egg with Lean Pork Congee. It cost $9 per bowl and the portion was meant for one! I felt that the congee was ok only & when I tried to bite the deep fried 'you tiao' bits, it was extremely hard that i had to give up on the bigger chunks!

All their dim sum items comes in 3s, so we topped up to 4 pieces for every one. The Liu Sha Bao aka Salted Egg Yolk Bun was nice! I count that as my favourite as the yolk was oozing once you bite into the bun. It is also just right, not too sweet.

I chose the Fried Beancurd Skin with Prawn & Seaweed ~ it was crispy & succulent indeed.

The Siew Mai & Har Gao were quite big but pretty normal.

I noticed a unique item on the menu, which states 草莓芋泥角 (Yam Croquette with Strawberry). The outlook seems good but I find that the yam is abit dry, it will be perfect if it is more moist. Oh ya, the strawberry topping was sour!

When the Xiao Long Bao 小龍包 (pork dumpling) was served individually, i admit i like its presentation & it is also easier to eat. I love Xiao Long Bao & these were pretty juicy as i drank up its soup! We also ordered the Chicken Claws & Pork Ribs but I couldn't comment as I do not eat these two items.

To end off our meal, we ordered four types of desserts. My mum had the Hot Almond Tea with Papaya; dad had the Honey Custard, bro chose the Aloe Vera with fruits & lastly I had the Pomelo with Mango ice-cream (芒果雪糕加楊枝甘露). The dark brownish honey custard was moist & soft, but I would prefer it to be more sweet (not my ideal kind of dessert). The Pomelo with Mango ice-cream was nice but I wish they can be more generous with the pomelo bits!

In a nutshell, we are unlikely to return again as it is really much more expensive & I only like 3 out of 10 items. Just a note, Citibank normal credit cards get 10%, while Citibank Platinum get 15% off the bill.
