Yakitori from ToriQ~ Smile Feb 09, 2014
Categories : Japanese

Wanted to grab a quick snack on the way home and I happened to pass by Tori Q, a kiosk selling a range of Yakitori, or grilled skewered meat. Other than the standard skewered meat from chicken or pork, there are also others like Quail Eggs ($1.20), Deep Fried Prawn ($1.20), Chicken Karaage ($1.40) and Arabiki (Pork) Sausage ($1.60).

I got the Chicken Yakitori, Chicken Balls and Mini Hashed Potato to try.

Chicken ($1.10) - Left
Made from chicken thigh, the meat is quite tender although I find the sauce to be a tad mild tasting. It is also not very sweet, and I'd have personally like it to be slightly more sweeter for more flavour.

Chicken Balls ($1.50) - Right
Also known as tsukune, these chicken balls are made from healthy minced meat with vegetables. The meat is very, very tender and the best part is the charred portion on the exterior which has a slight smoky flavour to it which I adore!

Mini Hashed Potato ($0.80)
Basically four mini hash brown balls on a stick, these little hash brown are quite crispy with a lingering aroma from the oil. You can actually get a bag of this from supermarkets for more value and fry it yourself, but for the sake of convenience, this is good to have for eating on the go.

Out of the three, I like the Chicken Balls best, and the Hashed Potato second. Their grilled meat are quite tender and I'd recommend getting the meatballs! These yakitori are great for a snack and prices are quite reasonable too, although it can add up to quite a bit if you are buying more to fill the tummy. If you want a more filling meal, they also have bento sets with rice which you can consider getting to takeaway instead.

Bakery Cuisine Smile Feb 09, 2014
Categories : Japanese | Bakery

Bakery Cuisine is a bakery that was initially set up to cater to office workers on the go. Step into the bakery, and you can immediately see the difference from the usual bakeries. The place is spacious, with their breads neatly organized and arranged in a minimal amount of display counters. Their set-up is clutter-free and fuss-free and certainly designed with busy office workers in mind. Here, instead of picking out breads yourself from rows and rows of display units, you will just need to tell the staff the breads or confections you want from the few display counters and they will pick and bag it for you.

If you think that some of the product offering here, like the Dorayaki in the photo above, is suspiciously similar to Dora Keiki, that is because Dora Keiki is a brand by Bakery Cuisine to promote a new line of Japanese-style cakes and confections inspired by the success of their Dorayaki.

There is also the usual range of bakery buns here like Curry Bun ($1.30), Chocolate Mexico ($1.30) and Vienna Sausage ($1.50). I find their variety to be quite limited compared to the wide variety you can usually find at most other local bakeries, but there are a few interesting flavours here like the Charcoal Red Bean Bun ($1.50).

Double Cheese ($1.30 each)
This simple bun consists of just plain bun with melted cheese and a light sprinkling of sugar on top, making it quite a sweet but cheesy bread. I'd have personally preferred it without the sugar, but the taste is quite decent overall.

Char Siew Bun ($1.50)
I find this visually good-looking bun to be slightly tastier than the Double Cheese. The bread is soft while the tasty char siew filling is also slightly firm to chew on.

Cheesecake ($1.50)
The texture of this Japanese cheesecake is a little like sponge cake and is rather cottony soft. It is also quite creamy but rather mild-tasting. I didn't find this sweet at all, which will be good news for people who doesn't like their cakes too sweet.

Mini Tau Sar Piah ($4.00 for 10)
Crumbly and salty, the tau sar filling is quite densely packed and is a treat to munch on. This actually costs $0.50 each but you can get 10 for only $4.00, which is quite worthwhile.

The prices here are quite average for a bakery but while there, we were told that there is also a promotion where we could buy any 5 breads for only $6.00 (we got 4 Double Cheese and 1 Char Siew Bun). We were not aware of this promotion so we appreciate that the staff took the initiative to inform us about it.

Overall, I'd recommend the Mini Tau Sar Piah as well as the Dorayaki, QQ Mochi and Hokkaido Custard Cake which are also part of the product line at Dora Keiki. But do note that the flavour range at Bakery Cuisine is not as extensive as Dora Keiki.

Strawberry Roll & Apple Strudel Smile Feb 09, 2014
Share on TwitterShare on Facebook
Categories : Bakery | Halal

This simple kiosk with their simple green "Polar" signboard is easy to spot from afar. On one side, there are counters for chilled treats like cakes and eclairs while the other side is a counter for hot food like the pies. I like the Chicken Pie from Polar Puff, but it wasn't available when I went this time, so I decided to get my next Polar Puff favourite, the Strawberry Roll, instead.

Strawberry Roll ($1.30)
I usually tend to go for chocolate when it comes to cakes or rolls like this but I just love the Strawberry Roll from Polar Puff. The cake roll is consistently soft, light and fluffy, and the strawberry jam in between taste quite concentrated, which may be a little sweet for some, but just nice for me.

Apple Strudel ($1.70)
The Apple Strudel seems a tad small but it is quite flaky and crispy, with a decent amount of sweet applesauce filling inside. The addition of raisins to the filling also adds to the sweetness of the strudel. While I find the Apple Strudel quite decent, I still prefer their Chicken Pie over it, but it is nonetheless still worth a try.

Their prices are pretty standard but I'd love to see more availability and variety of the pies and puffs at a single point of time, as certain puffs are usually either not available or sold out. This also seems to be the case at the branch at Causeway Point. But otherwise, the service at Sembawang Shopping Centre is pretty decent.

Quality Bread @ Four Leaves! Smile Feb 09, 2014
Share on TwitterShare on Facebook
Categories : Bakery

There are quite a number of bakeries located at Causeway Point, leaving consumers really spoilt for choices when it comes to bread varieties. I've tried several breads and cakes from all the bakeries here. One of them is Four Leaves, a long-established chain known for their consistently good quality breads and cakes.

The Four Leaves branch at Causeway Point is not very big, so the selection of buns offered here can sometimes be a tad limited, at least on two or three times I've been here. But there are usually enough variety in this small but clean and neatly organized outlet to keep me happy!

Belgian Waffle ($1.20)
There was a fresh batch of freshly baked waffles when I went so I took the chance to grab one. These waffles certainly taste good when they are just out from the waffles maker. Slightly sweet and crispy on the outside, it is really quite a pleasure to munch on! Recommended especially if you can get them freshly made!

Custard Milk Bits ($1.80)
These are like mini bread and are very soft and moist with a thin layer of custard in between. These little treats are just right especially if you want something light, although I'd recommend enjoying having these with a nice cup of hot chocolate! Yummy!

An Pan ($1.20)
I have tried the An Pan (Red Bean Bun) from several bakeries here such as BreadTalk and Mugiya and I personally prefer the one from Four Leaves. The bun is consistently soft and the red bean paste is just the right texture and not overly sweet. Out of the three bakeries, the taste of the An Pan at Four Leaves is the best for me and the portion of red bean paste is also the most plentiful (at least based on the ones I've tried).

Coco Exotic ($3.80)
The soft sponge cake is layered with light chocolate mousse with bits of crunchy hazelnut in it, topped with a layer of smooth chocolate ganache. Chocolatey and nutty but not too sweet is how I'd describe it. At $3.80, this is more affordable but just as equally tasty as the other cute cakes from bakeries like the Icing Room.

Mini World (1 for $0.80, 3 for $2.20, or 5 for $3.30)
Top: Brownie, Little Chocolate Danish, Little Double Twist
Bottom: Little Croissant (Ham & Cheese), Little Chicken Ham

Four Leaves also has a popular range known as "Mini World" which are basically mini breads. It costs $0.80 per piece for each mini bread but if you get 5 pieces, it is only $0.66 each, which is really quite value for money. There are a variety and a balanced mix of both sweet and savoury flavours like Little Chocolate Danish, Little Hawaiian Ham Pizza, and Little Potato Bacon Bun among others. The breads are quite tasty despite the small size and my personal favourites are mini croissant, brownie, chocolate danish and all the other mini chocolate buns and pastries like the oreo one. My only grouse is that not all flavours are available at all times.

In general, I find their breads and cakes here lower priced and more affordable than those like BreadTalk. Four Leaves may not have fancy breads but they make up for it in taste and quality, which has remained consistent throughout the times I've been here. Admittedly though, one thing I would like to see is more new variety of flavours being introduced.

I also find the staff here more courteous and approachable, and they are also quite helpful with queries. Look like Four Leaves will continue to remain as my favourite bakery at Causeway Point for time to come. lol

Rice Dumplings! Smile Feb 09, 2014
Categories : Food Court

My mum wanted to buy some dumplings from Eastern Rice so I took the chance to check out the offerings on their menu. They have quite a variety of rice dumplings here like the Nonya Rice Dumpling ($2.50), Hokkien Rice Dumpling ($2.50), Cantonese Style with Egg Yolk Dumpling ($3.20), Black Eye Beans Dumpling ($2.30) and even a Black Pepper Chicken Rice Dumpling ($2.70). There are also mini versions of the Nonya and Hokkien Rice Dumplings ($1.40 each). I was surprised to see that they also have other local snacks like Tutu Kueh ($2.50), Shui Kueh ($2.00), Yam Cake ($1.80), Zhu Chang Fen ($1.80) and Muah Chee ($2.00)!

Muah Chee ($2.00)
Being a fan of muah chee, I got this to try.The muah chee was quite chewy and was sweet enough for me. But at $2.00, I thought that the portion given was quite little compared to the ones you can get at Pasar Malam. There was also too little of the peanut coating and it could certainly do with more of it for added crunchiness.

Nonya Rice Dumplings ($2.50) and Mini Nonya Rice Dumplings
Made from white glutinous rice with a filling of pork cubes fried with coriander powder, this gave off a nice aroma when we opened it. The glutinous rice was appropriately sticky although it was a little too oily for me, but my mum loved it.

Their strength certainly lies in the dumplings, although prices for some of the items like the muah chee can be a little pricey for its portion size. Service though, was quite decent.
