So, one of my favourite fast food chain has just released a new burger and potato snack!

For a fast food outlet, this branch was quite nicely decorated and warmly lit which made it quite an inviting place to dine and chat in. We went for a weekday dinner and the place was crowded, but the noise level was tolerable, which made it an ideal place to have a meal and chill with friends.

We placed our orders at the counter and we were lucky to be served by a bubbly staff who was friendly and upbeat despite the late hour and dinnertime crowd, although we had to wait quite a while for the food to be prepared and delivered to our table.

Red Grilled Chicken Set without Cheese ($7.70)
The Red Grilled Chicken Set without cheese costs $7.70 while the Red Grilled Chicken Set with cheese costs $8.00. The set comes with fries and a soft drink. If you get just the burger only, it will cost $4.00 without cheese and $4.30 with cheese. I got the set without cheese for myself. The grilled chicken was quite juicy while the red tomato sauce was tangy, but I didn't find the sauce to be sufficient enough for the meat so the burger ended up tasting a little bland. Don't hold me to my word, but I suspected that the burger with cheese might be slightly more flavourful. I supposed it was really my fault for omitting the cheese as I wanted a "healthier option" especially since this burger was supposed to come "without an abundance of calories" (so they say) but what the heck, nobody eats burgers to be healthy.

Fortunately (or unfortunately depending on your appetite), Mos Burger's burgers tend to be smaller in portion compared to the burgers at American fast food outlets like McDonalds, so the portion of the burger was just nice for me, but people with a voracious appetite might find it a tad lacking in size and not very filling.

Prosperity Coin ($1.00)
The usual price was $1.50 but if you get this with the Red Grilled Chicken Set, then it cost only $1.00 for 3 pieces. This was basically hash brown in the shape of a small round coin. This tasted like what a normal hash brown tasted like. It was quite crispy on the outside and was also quite aromatic from the oil used to fry it.

Overall, I think the Red Grilled Chicken Burger would be quite decent especially if there was more red tomato sauce to go with the meat. But if you ask me, this wasn't something that I'd make a return trip to Mos Burger for. I personally still preferred their Chicken Burger or Tsukune Rice Burger. While we both agreed that the Prosperity Coin was nice, when it comes to Mos Burger however, I'd rather get their Potato Croquette instead. But, that's just me.

So, 3 stars for taste for the Red Grilled Chicken Burger, and 5 stars for the rest of my favourite food from Mos Burger as listed under "Recommended Dish(es)" below! lol

Categories : French | Bakery | Café | High Tea

When I first heard that Paul Bakery, a boulangerie that originated from France, was going to open another branch at Westgate, I was thrilled to say the least. I've heard so much about them but never really found the chance and time to check out the branch at Orchard since I was always either side-tracked or out-voted when it came to dining choice whenever we were in the area. Now that there is a branch closer to home, it made the trip to Paul all the more inevitable! Unfortunately, the first time I went with a friend, the restaurant was not opened for business. I only managed to get to try the food on my second trip to Westgate a week later with my mum.

The restaurant is immediately noticeable and certainly stands out with its distinguishable black shop front. With its elegant exterior and refined interior, it certainly gives off an air of class and sophistication!

The bakery is separated from the dine-in restaurant and is located just next to the restaurant. The bakery is for takeaway although there are also a few seats in this area if you want to sit and eat. This was where my mum and I had our afternoon tea at. According to the staff, there is no service charge to eat in this area since it's basically takeaway (they give you the food in takeaway carriers instead of serving them on a plate unless you're dining in the restaurant). Even so, we decided to stick to our decision of eating outside at the bakery instead.

This is because here, you can find the display of their bread, viennoiserie and pâtisserie range across a spectrum of prices such as the Croissant ($2.70), Palmier ($3.60), Pain Chocolat Amandes ($4.20), Chouquettes Fromage ($5.80), Éclairs like the Éclair Vanille ($6.60), as well as Tartelettes like the Tartelette Citron Meringuée ($7.30). I nearly died at the sight of their display counter with all those big eclairs, large tarts, huge macarons.... If it weren't for the staff eyeing us and waiting for our order, I've have been contented just to stand there and take my own sweet time soaking in the lovely sight of all the freshly baked breads, pastries and confection!

Eventually though, we got around to order a few items, which they gave us in takeaway boxes and a carrier bag.

Espresso ($3.50)
This espresso had a a thin layer of crema on top and was quite bitter to taste. I wasn't too particularly keen on this although it got the thumb up from my mum who liked the bitter taste. She didn't even add any sugar to it!

Croissant ($2.70)
This pure butter croissant was quite buttery! It was also very crispy on the outside and was quite flaky with bits falling off as we bit into it! My mum liked the crispy and buttery taste which was just right for her, although I prefer my croissants to be slightly more softer.

Pain au Chocolat ($3.00)
The addition of two chocolate bars to the croissant was a nice treat for people like me who want to have their pastry with something sweeter. Like the standard croissant, this was also quite crispy and flaky. The melted chocolate was not very sweet but it was chocolate-y enough for me!

Tartelette Chocolat ($6.90)
This tartelette was my favourite among all the items we ordered. The tart base was buttery, slightly moist, and crumbly but yet strong enough to hold together without falling apart upon picking up. Velvety smooth and wickedly rich, the dense but not overly sweet chocolate filling worked well the buttery, crumbly tart to deliver a luscious, melt-in-the-mouth chocolate treat that simply hit the spot on every bite! Oh my Paul, this was simply divine! I'll admit to shamelessly hoarding this for myself! lol

Pure Jee ($8.88)
We were a tad full after the food, so we took this pretty little dessert home instead. I must admit that I did have rather high expectations for this after the Tartelette Chocolat. After all, the shiny and silky smooth Pure Jee is the darkest chocolate dessert in their range and is made of bitter chocolate (70% cocoa) with a crunchy hazelnut base and rich chocolate mousse with a sprinkling of chopped nuts around the sides. I didn't find this to be very bitter nor was it overly sweet. What I did love, however, was the heavenly combination of smooth chocolate mousse with crunchy hazelnut base and bits! Chocolate and hazelnut is a combination that simply can't go wrong! But while this was also a delightful treat, I still found myself preferring the Tartelette Chocolat more for its thicker chocolate taste.

Overall, our bill came up to $24.98 for 5 items. Admittedly, the price can get a tad steep especially for their pâtisserie range, although I think it is more or less in line with the prices from other specialty desserts cafe or restaurants. My mum though, wasn't sold on the price. Service was also a tad lacklustre, at least from the bakery side. There were no warmth nor were there friendly smiles, just somewhat stoic staff doing their jobs. Considering the price and reputation of the Paul brand, we had expect something a little better.

We may not have tried most of the items in their range but so far, based on our limited sampling, I found myself leaning towards their pâtisserie items more than the viennoiserie items. I am certainly a converted fan of their pâtisserie range, especially the Tartelette Chocolat, and I highly recommend the tartelettes from Paul Bakery. It is good enough for me to wonder if a return trip for a proper meal at the Paul restaurant may be next in order. One thing for sure, I will definitely come back again for the Tartelette Chocolat as well as to try the other bakery items like the breads and the other desserts in their pâtisserie range like the Millefeuille Chocolat, which also seem like something worth checking out in future!

I actually didn't know of this little bakery until a colleague told us about it. Apparently, it is a really popular bakery specializing in halal cupcakes where the demand always exceeds the supply. Because of this, we went early, before 1pm. Fortunately, the shop was opened for business despite a "closed" sign. There was also quite a queue there and the cupcakes were so popular and moved so fast that the staff barely seemed to have the time to restock the display which looked kind of bare.

Make no mistake about it, this is a small and humble shop alright, but here, quality and taste counts for more than anything else. There were no tables or seats to dine in. Instead, we just told the counter what we wanted and they packed the cupcakes for us to pay at the cashier as we moved down the queue. Service was pretty decent and the cashier was both soft-spoken and courteous when I enquired about the prices.

There are supposed to be over 80 kinds of flavours but only 6 flavours are sold per day, although the popular Nutella Red Velvet and Salted Caramel seem to be a permanent fixture on the menu. This shop is also a firm believer of pushing the boundaries when it comes to creating innovative flavours such as Horlicks Dinosaur, Gingerbread Maple Liquid Cheesecake, Boston Cream Pie and Green Apple Yakult Lemon! The flavours available when we went included the Nutella Red Velvet, Salted Caramel, Spiced Pumpkin Salted Caramel Latte, Mango, Lavender Blueberry and Peanut Butter Salted Dark Chocolate Cashew Bark. Quite a mouthful!

Being a fan of Nutella, I was initially planning to get the Nutella Pie and the Nutella cupcake but was disappointed that the pie was sold out even though they started selling at 12pm and we were there before 1pm! You can certainly see how popular this bakery is! My second choice was to get the Nutella Red Velvet cupcake and Salted Caramel cupcake, but just right before ordering, another staff brought out a new batch of Peanut Butter cupcakes which I found pretty, so I quickly substituted the Salted Caramel for it!

Nutella Red Velvet Cupcake ($4.00)
The cupcake was moist and the frosting was thick and flavourful! There was a decent amount of Nutella filling in the center too! I like that the cupcake was not very sweet or overloaded with sugar like some cupcakes can be.

Peanut Butter Salted Dark Chocolate Cashew Bark Cupcake ($4.00)
This was moist and quite fluffy and there was a really creamy peanut butter taste which I simply adore! To my surprise, there was a chocolate filling in the middle of the cupcake which I did not expect (I was expecting peanut butter). Despite that, this was not too sweet either and there was also a hint of saltiness. Prior to tasting the cupcakes, I had initially thought that I'd like the Nutella Red Velvet cupcake better, but I was surprised to discover that I actually preferred this Peanut Butter cupcake more!

My colleagues also bought the other flavours which was well-received by everyone in the office!

Overall, I'd definitely recommend Fluff Bakery if you are a fan of cupcakes! The shop is usually open until the cupcakes are sold out, so you definitely need to go early to prevent any disappointment. Also be prepared to queue for a bit. The prices for all the cupcakes are $4.00, which some may find a tad pricey. But I think these are quite worth it. The cupcakes are moist and each are cored by hand and filled with specially created surprise center filling that is rich but yet not so sweet! Of course, I don't claim to have tried all of their flavours, but try the Salted Caramel if you want a safer option. If you are adventurous and don't mind teasing your palate with a whimsical mix of flavours, then go for anything and try a bit of everything. You'll never know if you might be surprised by a cupcake like I was with the Peanut Butter Salted Dark Chocolate Cashew Bark. It is certainly worthwhile to keep an open mind when you are at Fluff Bakery!

Love at First Bite Smile Dec 09, 2013

Fans of Royce' staying in the Western part of Singapore will be soooo glad to know that a branch has just opened at Westgate! I am not really a frequent patron of the brand due to the price tag of their chocolates. But I just can't resist chocolates, so I had to check out this branch at Westgate. Plus I also wanted to take a look at their Christmas selection this year.

The shop had a slightly more rustic (though still classy) look compared to the sleek and posh decor at the Ion branch but I found it less intimidating to browse around at the Westgate branch. And browse around I did, taking my own sweet time to check out the chocolates! Despite that, the staff was quite friendly and was patient with me even though I took quite a while to decide exactly what I wanted.

I ended up not getting any of the Christmas selection, although I got the ever popular Nama Chocolates "Au Lait" as well as the Petite Truffle "Praline". These were wrapped in cooling packs to maintain the coolness (and quality) of the chocolates on my way home.

Nama Chocolate "Au Lait" ($15.00)
You can really taste the difference in quality compared to other mass-produced chocolates. Most mass-produced chocolates tend to get brick hard upon refrigeration, which is why I usually don't like eating my chocolate chilled; I prefer eating them at room temperature for that immediate dense and gooey chocolate sensation when you pop them in the mouth. (Okay, okay, so I'm all for immediate gratification!) The Nama chocolate was in a different class altogether. It was one of those chocolates that was still in excellent condition and still tasted divine even when eaten chilled. Firm, but still soft and tender within. Did I mention it tasted really rich too? The first sensation was the slightly bitter chocolatey taste of the powder, followed by the velvety, super creamy chocolate that was just so fresh and simply melted in the mouth. Simply pure bliss!

Petite Truffle "Praline" ($12.50)
This was noticeably harder than the Nama Chocolate upon refrigeration, but no less inferior in taste. This was the only truffle in Royce's Petite Truffle selection that was liquor free but I got it as I also like nutty chocolates (think Ferrero Rocher). The delicate soft ganache chocolate was coated with chopped almond bits, which made it very nutty and crunchy on every bite! Despite the nuts, I could still taste the freshness and creaminess of the chocolate inside. I actually never tried their truffles before which was why I got this with the Nama Chocolate and I am so glad I did! The "Praline" is currently one of my favourites from Royce!

So far, I have only tried "Au Lait" from the Nama Chocolate range and "Praline" from the Petite Truffle selection so I don't have much to offer in terms of flavour recommendations. But for the Nama chocolate, the salesgirl actually also recommended the "Champagne (Pierre Mignon)" and "Mild Cacao". I was initially debating whether to stick to "Au Lait" or get "Mild Cacao" or "White" to try, but in the end I decided to just stick to "Au Lait" since I found this to be a safer choice for myself especially since its price tag meant that these chocolates are a once-in-a-blue-moon kind of treat and I didn't want to be stuck with a flavour that I didn't enjoy as much. I'd eventually love to try their other flavours though. If you are more adventurous, just go with whatever makes you melt! Otherwise I think that the "Au Lait" (with Liquor) or "Mild Cacao" (Liquor-Free) would be a safer choice. But do take note of the expiry date as these are made with fresh ingredients so they tend to expire much faster than mass-produced ones, usually within a month.

Overall, even though my experience with Royce is currently pretty limited, I think their chocolates are top notch even though I know some people questioned the price and value of the chocolates. Admittedly, the chocolates are pretty pricey and I used to be one of these people a few years back. But you are paying for quality, and Royce' chocolates certainly deliver in both quality and taste. I think it's really hard to understand what the hype is all about unless you really try a piece of the chocolate. Even my parents, who initially balked at the price, took another piece right after their first try, and they are not even chocoholic like I am! I guess you can say that with Royce, it's almost certain to be love at first bite! lol

Tuck away in a corner at the Woodgrove, this Denon Soya franchise looks like just another average, nondescript heartlands shop. But I think they actually have some rather nice stuff on their menu.

They are more known for their soya bean and beancurd, which my mum is a fan of due to its smoothness and freshness. They even have a range of flavours like Chocolate, though I think I'd just stick to the original flavor. Personally though, being a person with a sweet tooth, I am more attracted to their range of Soya muffins and cookies, which they touted as being "a healthy choice"!

My personal favourites are the Double Chocolate and Marble Chocolate muffins. They are soft and not too dry, and the double chocolate muffin was quite chocolate-y and simply tasty! (Though I am not too sure how much healthier it would be with all those chocolate in it LOL). If you don't like your muffins overloaded with chocolate, then the marble chocolate would be a safer bet.

Another item I would recommend is their Soya Cookies. I never thought cookies made with soya beans could be so delicious! I was hooked on first bite! The cookies are crunchy and they retain their crunch even after left alone for a few days. Plus, at $2 a pack, it is pretty affordable.

The store at Woodgrove also has bubble tea and ice blended drinks on its menu. I've tried their both Tiramisu Mocha and Ice Blended Cookies and Cream, which is basically made of Oreo cookies. Both are pretty much okay in my opinion, though the Ice Blended Cookies and Cream started out a little bland.

The store doesn't score much on decor and there are only just a few simple tables and chairs for eat-in customers (since most people usually takeaway their food), but the staff are friendly and courteous and the uncle who was at the store when I went even offered to heat up my muffin for me if I preferred to have it slightly warmer. I think that, and the lovely muffins, pretty much more than made up for the simple decor!
