Roti Prata Smile Jan 11, 2014

Categories : Indian | Food Court | Halal

Other than the standard plain prata and prata with egg, this prata stall also has prata like Cheese Prata, Mushroom Prata and Roti Paper. There are also a range of Murtabak, Chapati, Thosai, Roti John, as well as Nasi Goreng, Mee Goreng and so on.

We decided to get the basic prata to try, and on ordering, we were informed that they do not take order for only one prata. There is a minimum order of 2 prata, so the cheapest option would be $2.00 for two plain prata. We decided to get one plain prata and one egg prata instead, which they accepted.

Roti Prata - Plain ($1.00)
The plain prata was quite crispy and we were pleasantly surprised to find that it didn't taste oily at all. On the contrary, it was almost quite dry. Taste-wise, this was pretty nice although I personally wasn't fond of the fish curry, which I found to be too sour for my liking although it was quite spicy.

Roti Prata - Egg ($2.00)
We thought an extra $1 for the extra egg was a little pricey, but this was slightly bigger and softer than the plain prata due to the egg and was also a tiny bit more chewy. Like the plain prata, this wasn't oily either but slightly dry.

Overall, the prata were decent and I personally preferred the plain prata over the egg prata for the extra crispiness. We both liked that these prata weren't greasy. However, I can't help but feel a tad ambivalent about them imposing a minimum order quantity for the prata.

Passed by the 8 Tarts kiosk at Causeway Point and I was suddenly tempted by the chocolate egg tarts on display, so I took the chance to buy a batch of tarts and pastries for myself and the family to share. The salesgirl was patient while I was looking through the display and also quite helpful with some recommendations. I ended up buying 5 items.

My only grouse was that the tarts were placed in the box back to back which I understand was to save space, but I wasn't too impressed because the arrangement meant that the icing and flakes on my chocolate tart fell off and was all over the bottom of the box. sad

Top Left: Roast Chicken Pastry ($1.20)
This was quite firm and flaky. The roast chicken filling was not too sweet but it tasted a little salty on first bite, although the saltiness was toned down on subsequent bites.

Bottom Right: Mushroom Chicken Pie ($1.20)
The pie was a little oily for me but it was quite savoury. There was not much mushroom or mushroom taste to it though. The filling was more towards chicken potato instead, at least for the one I got.

Wife's Delights ($1.20)
This was quite crisp and flaky and did not crumple easily. It was soft but not very chewy. This was not as sweet as some other wife biscuits I've tried elsewhere but personally, I thought that this was a tad bland.

Top Right: Fresh Soya Egg Tart ($1.40)
This was supposed to be a slightly healthier version of the traditional egg tart. The pastry was quite crispy and the soya custard was quite smooth but it was a tad too mild for my taste. Probably better off getting the Chef's or Portuguese Egg Tart.

Bottom Left: Dark Chocolate Egg Tart ($1.80)
This was my favourite out of the lot. The chocolate tart was crispy and held well together but yet crumble easily in the mouth, which I liked. The custard was very smooth and there were chocolate flakes and icing on top which added to the sweetness and chocolatey taste of the tart. I was also surprised to find chocolate sauce inside the custard, which was simply awesome!

Overall, we thought that the pastries were pretty decent. Prices were pretty reasonable as well. Between us, we liked the Roast Chicken Pastry, Mushroom Chicken Pie and the Dark Chocolate Egg Tart. I'd personally recommend the Dark Chocolate Egg Tart and will definitely be back for more!

Snow White Among Breads Smile Jan 11, 2014

Categories : Bakery

Four Leaves is one of my favourite bakeries and I am glad that there are several branches of the bakery all over Singapore for added convenience. While passing by a branch at IMM, I decided to get some bread for myself and the family.

Snow Blanc ($2.50)
One of my favourite Four Leaves breads is Snow Blanc, which was recommended to me by my mum. This feels really silky smooth and soft in the mouth. Even the crust is quite soft compared to those like Gardenia or Sunshine! I tried using Snow Blanc to make ham and cheese sandwich and it was as tasty as breads can be. I also tried it toasted with jam but if you ask me, I rather eat it untoasted just to savour the smoothness of the bread! And yes, this was definitely good enough to eat plain on its own! At $2.50 per loaf, this may seem to be a tad pricey but I found this to be worth the price, especially if you enjoyed the smooth and soft texture like I did!

Kaya Bun ($1.10)
I also bought a few kaya buns for the family. At only $1.10 each, this was pretty affordable. The bread was soft with a decent amount of kaya in it, which my mum liked. I thought this was quite okay but there are other breads from Four Leaves that I personally liked more.

The quality and taste of the bread among the Four Leaves branches (at least those I've been to) are quite consistent. The prices of their bread and cakes are also reasonable compared to some other bakery chains. Service was quite decent at the IMM branch although I think the service was much better at the Causeway Point branch but nevertheless, it is still worth a visit especially for the breads like the Snow Blanc!

Japanese Bento & Omurice OK Jan 11, 2014
Categories : Japanese | Food Court

We were thinking of what to eat for dinner when we saw a promotion for a few Bento sets at the Japanese stall and decided to give it a try. Upon looking at their menu, which also include other Japanese meals such as the Oyako Don ($4.90), Omu Rice ($5.50), and Ramen or Udon ($4.90 onwards), we decided on one of the bento sets and omurice set.

Saba Fish + Chicken Karaage Set ($5.90)
This originally cost $5.90 but we got it at the promotional price of $5.00. The chicken was quite crispy but we found the saba fish to be a tad salty. The set also came with a side of miso soup, which we agreed was a tad diluted. We also decided to top up $1.00 to add a side of Chawanmushi to it. The chawanmushi was smooth and not salty, but there weren't much ingredients in it except for a slice of Narutomaki and a piece of meat in it.

Omurice with Teriyaki Chicken ($5.50)
This looked pretty good in presentation but taste-wise it was quite disappointing for me. The fried rice itself was bland and tasted like the normal white rice. It didn't seem to be fried with any tomato sauce as was expected and instead seemed to rely on the somewhat diluted ketchup topping for added flavour instead. The teriyaki chicken was more like crispy chicken drizzled with a little teriyaki sauce instead of being broiled or grilled and glazed with sauce, but taste-wise it was quite okay if you ignore that and the mayonnaise to dip it in was pretty good.

Overall, we agreed that the food was a tad light in taste for our liking, although this might appeal to some who prefer more subtle taste when it comes to Japanese food. The prices were more or less average for food court meals. But price and taste-wise, I personally thought that it was more worth getting the Bento sets.

Flor Patisserie is Japanese-styled patisserie that serves authentic Japanese-inspired French pastries by an experienced Japanese chef.

I have read rave reviews about their cakes which are very light and fluffy. I was also impressed to read that they also have very strict standards and quality control for their cakes and each piece is freshly made everyday. With that in mind, I decided to check out the branch at Takashimaya when I made a trip to Kinokuniya last month.

I actually had my mind set on trying the Mont Blanc and getting the Langue Du Chat cookies but unfortunately the selection was pretty much limited when I went. According to the salesgirl, it was the Christmas season so they were mostly selling their Christmas range of products. I was disappointed but the salesgirl was very friendly and helpful with my questions which made up for my disappointment. That, and also the fact that I managed to get the last piece of Earl Grey Choco... whew.

Earl Grey Choco ($6.95)
I have to agree, the cake roll at the base was really very soft and just so fluffy! The slightly crusty edges added a bit of crunchiness to the cake which I liked. The chocolate and Earl Grey taste was delicate but they worked well together. In addition, there was fresh banana in it which added a little extra to the flavour. I was also delighted to find crunchy chocolate bits in it for the added crunch! Despite the variety of ingredients that went into this cake alone, it felt surprisingly light, fresh, and even healthier compared to conventional cakes!

Marron Pie ($4.50)
At first, I thought the Marron Pie looked a tad greasy in its plastic packaging. But despite this, the pie was just so lovely! There was a buttery fragrance upon opening and the crust was very flakey and buttery as well. The inside was very soft with texture like a muffin and there were real chestnut pieces which I enjoyed! This pie was pretty sweet but not so cloyingly so, at least for me. Totally worth every cent and calories!

I'm definitely a coverted fan of Flor Patissierie and I'd recommend giving their cakes and pastries like the Marron Pie a try. Apparently their confections and pastries are made entirely from natural ingredients without any artificial stabilizers, agents or preservatives such as baking powder. It's amazing how their cakes turn out so fresh and delicious! To ensure that you enjoy the high level of freshness and quality of each piece that the chef and outlets painstakingly strive to maintain everyday, it is recommended that you eat the cake on the same day of purchase. I was really disappointed at not being able to try their other items but I'll definitely go back again to try their other range of cakes and pastries!
