A Touch of Italy in Singapore Smile Mar 13, 2012

Categories : Italian | Pasta | Halal

PastaMania has always been my favourite alternative for reasonably-priced healthy
Italian food with no MSG.

The outlet at the Nex Mall is always busy, with long queues.
The orders were taken promptly and the food arrived just as fast.

My all-time favourite pasta here is Al Funghi - which is Shiitake mushroom in a cream-based sauce. At Pasta Mania you have a choice of pasta and my all time favourite is Fusili.
The pasta was piping hot, and with shredded cheese, it was an awesome steal!
The Shiirake mushroom was chewy and cooked just right!

We also ordered the 7-inch Spicy Chicken Pizza. At Pasta Mania, the pizzas are prepared with a special home made dough and base. The Pizza smelt so good and it tasted equally good. The chicken chunks had been well-marinated and the extra shredded cheese enhanced the taste.

For sides we had the Chicken wings and Bruschetta. The secret in the chicken wings was the special marination and the coriander chilli sauce that came with it made it a must have, yummy! My all-time favourite side is the Bruschetta - specially seasoned diced tomatoes served on toasted baguette. The diced tomatoes are lightly sauteed in olive oil, so this side is both tasty and healthy.

Overall, without the service charge, the prices are reasonable.
The environment tends to get a little too noisy, though, on a busy day.

Perhaps, I will try something else the next time.
I will definitely be back for more.

Great Nasi Lemak....and more! Smile Mar 08, 2012

Categories : Halal

QIJI, located at Nex Mall, serves authentic local dishes like Nasi lemak, Laksa, Mee Siam,
Popiah, Malay Tahu Goreng and Chee Cheong Fun.
The tables are quite closely packed, so, on a busy day, it's difficult to get a seat.

On that day we decided to try the Nasi Lemak and Laksa.
There are many different Nasi Lemak sets to choose from, or you can go free and easy
and customise your own set. I chose Chicken wing, two pieces of otak and ikan bilis.
We also ordered Laksa (with yellow noodles) with prawns but no cockles.

One thing I enjoy watching is how the stall assistant neatly arranges the items ordered for each Nasi Lemak set - the chicken wings are cut and neatly arranged, the otak leaf wrapper is peeled off and the ikan bilis is carefully placed at the side, not forgetting the sambal chilli.

The Nasi lemak was cooked to perfection - not too much coconut milk.
The Otak pieces were absolutely ''sinful'', though - rich in coconut milk, full of flavour
and grilled just right - really an indulgence. The chicken wings were fried hot and crispy
and the ikan bilis with peanuts were delicious condiments.

Next, the Laksa - another gastronomic experience. The gravy - the most important part - was thick and full of flavour. All the ingredients, especially the prawns, were incredibly fresh. Even though it was 8pm, the food was still being prepared with such freshness.

Another impressive point worth mentioning was the care taken by the order taker to ensure that the customers got exactly what they asked for - all special requests were attended to with precision.

I will definitely be back for more - perhaps the tahu goreng the next time!!

More Than Toast! OK Mar 07, 2012

Categories : Food Court

This outlet of Toast@Work is located at the Food Junction in NEX mall.
The outlet has its own seating area for its customers, so that's something good.
The variety of side dishes that go with the noodles is great.
However, the noodles were a little too oily and salty.
The chicken wings were good, but the vegatables were a little tasteless.
The fried egg was a bit too soggy.

The Teh C was the main draw.
Made the old-fashioned way - tea leaves are mixed in boiling hot water before being strained and individually mixed as per the customer's request.
The aroma of the tea was enticing and the tea was absolutely fantastic.
I will definitely be back for more tea.

The service at this stall was good, but the the environment was really noisy.

An Authentic Taste? Cry Mar 07, 2012

Categories : Food Court | Noodles

There is always a long queue at this stall, so I decided to find out what was so special.
It was close to 9pm, so I guess closing time was coming.

I ordered the small Fried Prawn Noodles.
The dish looked really delicious while it was being prepared.
It was prepared in bulk and the stall assistant scooped out
the various portions for each customer.

There was a generous serving of prawns, but, tastewise something was not quite right.
The noodles were bland and practically tasteless.
It seemed like a hurried job, since it was almost the last batch before closing time.
I'm not sure if all the ingredients were added properly and mixed.
It really seemed a waste of $4.80.
Definitely some seasoning was missing.
I added the sambal chilli provided for some saving grace.
Service and the environment were both acceptable, though.
Will probably not go back for more sad

Yummy Laksa!!! Smile Mar 06, 2012

The laksa at this stall comes in small and large sizes.
We opted for the larger size - and did not regret it.
There was a generous serving of ingredients and the portion was really BIG!
The gravy was thick, full of flavour, mouth-watering and really good to the last drop!
The service at the stall was warm and friendly, the order was taken carefully and the food was prepared accordingly.
This stall is located within the Food Republic food court.
There is a cozy ambience and great feel here.
Will be back for more, and maybe will try the prawn noodles the next time!
