Hokkaido Thousand Layer Cakes OK Dec 31, 2013
Share on TwitterShare on Facebook
Categories : Japanese | Bakery | Desserts and Cakes

First Love Patisserie serves Hokkaido Thousand Layer Cakes, much like our Kueh Lapis or like the Mille Crepe. I passed by its Orchard outlet and since I chanced upon their Raffles City outlet I decided to give it a try.

I wanted to get 2 slices (2 for $12.50) to bring back home but the staff said it cannot be kept outside for too long or it would turn bad or something. So I ended up ordering one slice of the Strawberry flavoured one ($6.50) and the staff asked if I am having it now. If yes he would get the softer one.

I was confused but when I took a bite, I realised why. This is because the cake has a similar consistency and texture to ice cream. In fact it tastes a little like ice cream cake. It is a bit difficult to slice through with a fork too. Presentation-wise, it came in a plastic box which wasn’t very impressive and it was such a small slice. The strawberry taste is quite strong and the layers are mixed with the original flavoured ones so it is not too overwhelming. The strawberry jam lathered on top adds to the fruit flavour too.

Overall I had say trying this dessert once is enough.

Myanmar Food OK Dec 31, 2013

My sister has been telling me about a place that serves decent Myanmar food. Curious and since I happen to be free, I decide to drop by for lunch with my sisters.

Inle Myanmar Restaurant is located in Peninsula Plaza and I think there are more than 2 restaurants serving Myanmar cuisine though my sister told me the other restaurant that serves cheap but equally good or better food has closed.

Anyway I reached the restaurant around 12.30pm with my sisters and the restaurant seems to be half full. My sister recommended a couple of dishes and we ended up ordering 2 main dishes, 2 appetizers and 2 drinks to share.

The Tea Leaves Salad Mix ($6) is actually a very refreshing and appetizing appetizer. I was initially quite hesitant when I saw a lot of unknown ingredients (to me) but my sister kept insisting and I am glad I did. It is very crunchy and it feels like I was munching on chips.

The Crispy Tofu ($6) didn’t impress me a lot. It is not literally sliced tofu and deep fried. Rather it seems like minced tofu and wrapped with another thin layer before it is fried. Luckily it tastes a little bit better with the gravy provided.

My sister and I shared a Butter Flavoured Rice with Chicken Curry ($8.50) and the chicken is really tender and easy to peel away. Not much difficulty encountered when eating it using a spoon and fork. The rice came with fried spring onions and I mixed it in. This ends up making it very crunchy and I could hardly discern the taste of the rice. I tried my sister’s portion of rice which didn’t have the onions, and there is only a very light hint of the butter. The rice is also the slightly soggy version. I like the curry which came with the chicken. It is unlike any other curry I tried and it is not spicy too.

My sister ordered a noodle dish ($7) and I would say it is an acquired taste. I didn’t like it very much. But she thinks it’s nice. So there you go. Taste is subjective.

We got the Myanmar Milk Tea ($3+) and it tastes like the Yin Yang (tea + coffee) drink at Chinese restaurants. The tea is very overpowers the milk, thus resulting in a more potent tea taste.

Overall I had say I am not very impressed by the food and the total bill came up to $33+. Still it is worth a try.

Pizza OK Dec 31, 2013

Categories : Italian | Pasta

I have wanted to try the pizza at this shop after my last visit to IMM. Today while I was back to do some shopping, I decide to get the Chicken Sausage Pizza ($4.50, additional 50cents for takeaway) to share with my sister.

Personally I wasn’t too impressed by the staff who took my order. He sounded quite gruff and did not notice that I was standing there waiting for my order to be taken. Anyway I was told to wait for 10 minutes.

The pizza is prepared on the spot and put into the oven. After it is done, it is sliced into 9 parts and although they didn’t provide any utensils, it is easy enough to eat. I like the thin crust pizza, very crusty and it is fresh hot out of the oven. Though it is a little bit burnt at the sides, I thought it might be better to leave it inside for a little bit more. The cheese provided a little bit of texture and taste but the sausage really didn’t add to the flavour.

Overall the pizza didn’t taste like much but I think for the price paid, it is quite a good deal. Maybe next time I will come back to try stronger flavours like Tom Yum.

Yakitori Bento Set OK Dec 31, 2013
Categories : Japanese | Japanese BBQ/Teppanyaki

Didn’t know what to eat for dinner but decided to get a bento box from Wadori. Wadori is under the RE&S Group of Family Restaurants which includes names like Kuishin Bo, Ichiban Sushi, Yaki Yaki Bo Teppanyaki, essentially all the restaurants you see lined at the Japanese Food Street at the basement level of Jurong Point.

I ordered rice, with Chicken Cheese Ball, Quail Egg Wrapped in Pork, Ebi Fry, and Yakitori Chicken. I was shocked when the total bill came up to $7.10. I also asked for a stick of the Deep fried Chicken but the staff did not include that. No wonder I thought it strange when he asked if I would like one more stick.

The Chicken Cheese Ball ($1.60) tastes similar to the chicken cheese balls offered at Old Chang Kee but for the same price, it is marinated and heavily seasoned in the yakitori sauce, thus giving it immense flavour. Nice! The Ebi Fry ($1.30) is a bit pathetic. Though I like the crispy batter, the prawn is really small and meagre. The Yakitori Chicken ($1.10) is also marinated and seasoned in the yakitori season. It is also quite juicy and tender which makes it quite nice. I was expecting the chicken to be tough. tongue Last but not least was the Quail Egg wrapped in Pork. I did not like it very much because the pork is quite chewy and I couldn’t really taste the yakitori sauce. Overall I think the quail egg is better suited by itself instead of being wrapped in pork. The rice ($0.90) came with the pickles and I like that there is the yakitori gravy over it which adds flavour to the rice.

Food etc OK Dec 31, 2013
Categories : Multi-Cuisine | Bars/Lounges | Café | Pasta | Steaks and Grills

Café Etc promises a casual dining experience and I think that is exemplified whereby they serve alcoholic drinks as well. The restaurant boosts both an indoor and outdoor dining experience.

During the festive season, my friend and I headed to Café Etc for some food and drinks. I had dinner already so I was there chilling while my friend ate. He ordered the Sirloin Steak ($26) which was quite expensive if you ask me. The portion is quite small and my friend commented that it is best eaten hot. We also ordered 2 glasses of Asahi ($9 each).

Judging from their menu, I have to say they have quite an extensive range of food (steaks, pastas, sandwiches and more) and beverages (smoothies, coffee, tea etc.). It’s a short walk away from Marymount MRT and I will definitely return to try their food.
