The Soup Spoon Union is actually a union of 3 restaurants, namely the said Soup Spoon, The Handburger and the Soup Broth Asia. They have an open concept kitchen where you can see the chefs working around preparing the dishes.

The restaurant boosts a combined menu with an infographic at the back which explains how you go about ordering your food. I ordered 2 slider burgers ($3.50 each) – Battered Dory and Caesar Chicken and one Mocha ($4.80). After placing my order at the cashier, I am handed this disc-like thing to be placed on the table. I thought I will collect my food once it starts blinking because it is an electronic device but the food was served to me. Hmm.

I tried the Chicken Cesar but decided to order it again for my sister to try since I thought it was nice. I like the burgers as they are toasted with butter and cheese at the undersides. Really yummy. It is a bit messy when eating this mini version of the Handburger. Its over in a few mouthfuls but it is good if you do not want a full meal.

The Mocha came in a cup which I thought looked pretty cool but it looks like it has seen better days. Anyway I was a bit disappointed cause I thought there would be some cool latte art like what was featured on the menu but didn’t have any. Still. The coffee is served lukewarm. Nothing to rave about.

Overall I like the restaurant concept and would definitely return for a mix of soups, burgers and noodles. There is also no service charge and for the nice ambience, why not?

Croissants Smile Dec 31, 2013

Unlike its name and logo, Tiong Bahru Bakery serves croissants and other French pastries and breads. I decided to get their Mini Croissant ($1.80) and Mini Chocolate Croissant ($2.20).

Their croissants are very flaky and not of the soft variety. The buttery taste is not very strong either. The chocolate croissant actually tastes like the original flavour croissant and only differentiates itself by its appearance and the thin layer of chocolate at the middle of the pastry. The chocolate is really strong and a little bitter. It did not taste like it is made with cheap chocolate.

Not too bad and I may return to try their other pastries and of course their coffee.

Bo Lo Bun Smile Dec 31, 2013

Besides their restaurants, Crystal Jade also has a bread franchise selling breads, pastries and cakes.

I like Bo Lo Baos (Pineapple Buns) and so before I exited IMM I got a Hong Kong Bo Lo Bun ($1.30) from the Crystal Jade Bread Bakery. They have a few versions, one with the BBQ Pork (Char Siew) or the Plain one. I got the latter and although it might taste better with the char siew, I wanted to savour the bun without any extra flavours. The top of the bun provided some sweetness to the bread which is what I like about this bread. It is quite crumbly and so very flaky. Be careful when eating this bun, it can create quite a mess.

Still it is not too heavy on the palate and I easily finished the light and fluffy bread.

Colorful Ice Cream Smile Dec 31, 2013

I am often attracted to the bright colours used by Baskin-Robbins (BR) and after a day of trekking with my friend, we decided to have some ice-cream to cool ourselves off the hot and humid weather.

BR differentiates itself with its wide variety of flavours and sometimes it can be quite an adventure sampling their ice cream flavours.

I ordered the King Scoop which comes with 3 small scoops ($8). The flavours I chose were Caramel Truffle, Citrus Twist (lemon and lime) and Blackberry Yoghurt. The latter tastes like the fruitella sweets that used to be quite popular last time.

The Caramel Truffle tastes the most expensive out of the three. It is a little bit sweet, I think due to the Caramel. The Citrus Twist is super sour. I taste more of the lime than the lemon. The Blackberry Yoghurt seems to be made of artificial sweetness but it is still quite a nice dessert. Overall I had say the ice cream is great!

Green + Food Smile Dec 31, 2013

Grub is a newly established restaurant situated in Bishan Park, surrounded by lots of greenery. They have an indoor and outdoor dining area and I would recommend the latter when the weather is not rainy or too humid to soak in the greenery.

Anyway I had dinner there with my friend and the place was packed. We also ended up waiting for quite some time for our food. Still it is worth the wait. We ordered the Truffled Egg Cocotte ($7) which comes with toasted focaccia bread and a bowl of eggs topped with crispy parma ham. The bread is nice as it has been toasted and goes great with the eggs. The eggs is a little salty because of the parma ham.

I had the GRUB cheeseburger ($13) which comes with 100% freshly minced beef patty and Monterey Jack Cheese. I often avoid beef if possible but my friend highly recommended this. I like the overall presentation of the burger, similar to that of The Handburger. A wooden plate with indents for the cup of fries. The burger is not too bad but the portion is a bit too small for my liking.

We also ordered a pot of Green Tea ($5) to go with the food. Overall I had say I love the atmosphere and ambience at Grubs and would definitely return for another round of food and drinks.
