Army Stew Smile Dec 31, 2013
Categories : Korean | Restaurant | BBQ

I brought my friends to Wang Dae Bak to try their Korean BBQ. My friends and I reserved a place in anticipation of their packed restaurant but we still ended up waiting like 10 minutes. It could be because not all my friends arrived yet and so we had to wait.

Besides ordering the meat, I also ordered their Army Stew ($30+) in a bid to try something different. The Army Stew is best for sharing with its huge portion. Though it only came with one serving of ramen, there are a lot of ingredients in it so it was quite filling.

Wonderful desserts Smile Dec 31, 2013   (Related Review)

Happened to pass by Rive Gauche in JP and decided to buy their desserts after looking at their wonderful display of cakes. I got the Brownie Bear ($6.50) and Crunchy Cheese Crumbs ($5.80).

I am not a big fan of chocolate but I got the Brownie Bear cause of its cute design. The bear cookie on top was just too cute to resist. Anyway its’ aptly named since the base was made up of chocolate cake filled with walnut bits. The chocolate cream on top was very creamy and yet not very sweet.

The Crunchy Cheese Crumbs comes in a small plastic bowl and the top and bottom was lined with cookie crumbs while the middle is made up of cheesecake. The cheesecake is not too dense and so it’s quite a light dessert. I recommended my mum to have a try because it does not have a heavy cheese flavour.

Though the cakes is a little pricey considering the portions, it is definitely worth the price for the taste and quality of the cakes. The price matches the overall feel of the shop and packaging of the cakes too.

Soft Bone Chicken Smile Dec 31, 2013
Categories : Indonesian | Halal

I passed by this shop while getting lunch at the other food stalls at Feast@Kopitiam and returned with my sisters to try out the food. (Feast@Kopitiam actually has both hawker stalls and mini-restaurants housed within the same location) I was actually attracted to their signature dishes – Soft-bone chicken.

Menu

Menu

We went around 4pm and the restaurant was fairly empty except for a few occupied tables, mainly families with kids. A brief background information about Malioboro, they are actually an Indonesian restaurant which first started in Bali, Indonesia before finding popularity and gradually expanded in Indonesia and recently opened its first overseas store in Singapore. The restaurant boasts edible chicken bones but I didn’t really put that theory to the test.

Anyway we ordered the Soft Bone Chicken with Salted Egg Sauce ($8.90), Tahu Telur ($6.50) and Ice Lemon Tea ($2.50). The latter tastes homemade with a slight tinge of lemon juice in it. Nice and refreshing. The Tahu Telor looks a bit different to the types which I had before. Instead of a cylindrical shape, it is more like a pancake made of tofu and egg. Regardless, its super nice with the sauce. The sauce adds flavour while the crushed and whole peanuts adds crunch to the tofu-egg combination. The sauce tastes a bit like the rojak sauce but it’s not as sweet or thick. If not for the sauce, the egg-tofu would taste quite bland.

I like the overall presentation of the Soft-bone chicken with Salted Egg Sauce. The sauce is really yummy with the faintest bits of salted egg in it, like there is some texture in the sauce. The rice is also modelled like a cone, very unique. The chicken is still relatively crispy and tastes great with the salted egg sauce. Though there are bones in the chicken, it is still largely a meat dish, reminiscent of a chicken fillet. Though we had to wait like 20 minutes for this dish, it was worth it.

My sisters commented that other people were trying the original soft-bone chicken and so I think that’s what we should do too next time, having tried the salted egg variation.

Late night at Shuffle Smile Dec 31, 2013
Categories : American | Bars/Lounges

My friends and I headed to Shuffle for a round of drinks. We reached around 11pm + and changed seats for a total of 3 times before we finally settled at the 4th table which was directly in front of the stage. (Yeah! Paraphrase was playing that night too). It was a bit unpleasant though. Luckily our drinks were only served at the 3rd table or I can imagine the waiters/waitresses moving the drinks from one table to another.
Paraphrase

Paraphrase

It’s a Friday night and Paraphrase was playing but 2 of the 4 members were away. The lead singer was replaced by another lady who had great vocals too. We dedicated quite a few songs but none of them was played. I think they are swamped by song dedications that day.

I noticed that Shuffle have also changed their decorations and some of their furniture. The same goes for their drinks menu. No more Kronenbourg Beer tower.  Anyway we ended up ordering a tower of Hoegaarden. In between drinks we wanted to play games so I asked for dices and I was expecting 4 cups of dices but was only given 1 cup. Hmm. Anyway we made do by playing some other games with 1 cup of dices.
Pizza

Pizza

My friend also ordered a thin crust pizza to share and though I only ate a little, (I was quite bloated with the drinks already), I liked the pizza. Cause 1) it’s thin crust (yes!) and also its very flavourful. I think I will try dinner there someday.
Drinks

Drinks

Before we left, we also ordered a bucket of Corona Extra and a bottle of Apple Cider for a friend who prefers lighter alcoholic beverages. Apple Cider is nice but I think it’s a bit too gassy for my liking. I prefer the Corona Extra.

Will continue returning to Shuffle for the drinks and live band!

Delectable Japanese Cuisine Smile Dec 31, 2013

Categories : Japanese | Sushi/Sashimi

Went to Ichiban Sushi at the Clementi outlet for lunch with my friend. We ordered Chawanmushi Salmon Cheese, Salmon Asaparagus, Lobster Salad, Chuka Wakame (seasoned seaweed sushi), Salmon Avocado Mayo, Mixed Vegetable Roll and Tamago sushi.
Chawanmushi

Chawanmushi

The Chawanmushi was good. Nice but a bit salty. I like it that way. It had a thick chunk of crab meat with a few slices of mushroom. Tastes better than the chawanmushi bought from food courts and other stalls.
Sushi

Sushi

I didn’t try the salmon because it was my friend who ordered those. She initially wanted to order sashimi but settled for salmon. She commented that the salmon slices were very thin. (Maybe cause she is comparing it to sashimi). The salmon is lightly cooked. The Salmon Avocado Mayo tasted very silky. I think it could be cause of the avocado mayo.

The Tamago is good by itself, no need to add the soy sauce or anything. There wasn’t anything special about the Chuka Wakame. There is a tinge of wasabi in the Lobster Salad. Quite strong actually that I almost got choked by it. tongue

The Vegetable Roll is very refreshing. Maybe cause I had it after the lobster salad. It is very crunchy cause of the cucumber. Hardly tasted the avocado. Still it is like vege goodness.

Overall we paid $28 for the meal which I think was quite reasonable.
