One of my favourite places for fish head curry in Singapore will have to be The Banana Leaf Apolo at Race Course Road. This was recommended by my college mate almost a decade ago when we then brought one of our American lecturers here for dinner and since then I have fallen in love with its fish head curry and papadum (of which I didn't manage to take any pictures because we finished them off too quick!).

Rice (briyani or white rice) is free flow here so you can have as much as you want. Side veggie dishes are also provided. The thing I like about eating here is that you get a banana leaf on your plate and they will serve the rice and appetizers on top of the leaf. I do like the smell of banana leaf and somehow I feel the leaf lends this alluring fragrance to your food just like what it does for banana leaf nasi lemak. Anyway, forget about white rice and just go for the biryani rice. Very fragrant indeed and not soggy at all.
Mutton Masala

Definitely not for anyone who doesn't like oily, greasy stuffs because this dish is super oily. Probably that's what makes this so tasty. The gravy which you can pour over your rice is very good. The mutton pieces are tender and moist and do not have any strong gamey smell at all.
Tandoori Chicken

I have eaten better Tandoori Chicken at Shahi Maharani but I do like the strong charred taste of this. Unfortunately, I thought the meat was a little dry (mostly breast meat) and there was a lack of spices flavour.

The leading dish of the entire meal. That's what we are here for. The gravy is spicy hot - shiok! Plenty of meat (despite being a middle size head - for 2-3 persons to share). Nicely cooked, not overdone at all. If I'm not wrong, this should be a red snapper fish. Whatever it is, it doesn't taste fishy at all which is good.

I used to think of Chinese traditional desserts as plain sugary soups with (possibly) miserable portions of ingredients (I'm not kidding - have you ever tried red bean or green bean soup that's full of water but so little beans?) until I chanced upon Dessert Hut in Chinatown one day while out shopping with my husband and I have been savouring desserts that I never used to like since then.

This is served cold and is extremely refreshing just like a chilled pudding. It is so light and smooth that it just slips down your throat. Don't even need to chew or bite into it. It doesn't taste very eggy even though its main ingredient is supposedly egg. It just reminds me of a Chinese version of custard pudding or creme brulee with sugar syrup. Bring on some caramel! It makes a great dessert on a hot day.

These chewy glutinous rice balls are filled with fragrant creamy black sesame. Though the peanuts are cooked soft and tender (and not mushy at all), they still maintain their original form.

This is probably my top favourite on their menu. The yam is more liquefied (like a thick creamy soup) as compared to yam paste served in most Chinese restaurants. It is very smooth and I love how you can just slurp it down your throat. The thing I like best is its original flavour - that natural sweetness and fragrance. Surprisingly the black glutinous rice further brings out the flavour of the yam because it's chewy so it lends a different texture to this dessert. Perfect match indeed.

 
With numerous desserts to choose from, I'm sure you can find one you like!

I love the idyllic surroundings of the hospital which is located next to a lake with lots of greenery. It is like a ‘hospital in a garden’ as well as a ‘garden in a hospital’. It claims to be a ‘healing environment’ which is possibly true as being there has kind of help put my worries aside and ease some troubles in the mind. One of my favourite things to do is to enjoy my all-time favourite lotus root pork ribs soup at the food court. Imagine, having a warm fuzzy feeling in your tummy as you sip hot soup while admiring the green scenic landscape.

 
The soup is very rich in flavour after being simmered for long hours. The pork ribs, peanuts and lotus roots are tender. You can also see strips of dried cuttlefish added to the soup to enhance its flavour. Best of all, no MSG is used so you won’t feel thirsty even after gulping down the entire bowl of soup. A simple and down-to-earth recipe of home style cooking, with big flavours and nutrition that make me always come back for more.

When I was previously working at Raffles Quay, one of my colleagues recommended me to try this thunder tea rice stall. I remembered tasting thunder tea rice a very long time ago but didn’t have a great impression of it because the green coloured tea soup had a very strong flavour that I wasn’t too used to. Either you like it or you hate it. I was glad I gave it a try again because I totally fell in love with this. I guess taste buds do change with age ;)

If you’re new to thunder tea rice, you may wish to know it is actually a signature dish of the Hakkas. And the word ‘thunder’ came about because it described the sound when the ingredients are pounded to make the tea soup. Thunder tea rice is very high in fibre because vegetables are the main ingredients. In fact, the tea soup itself is also made from tea leaves, herbs, nuts, seeds and grains. Low fat and low cholesterol. Great for detoxification and weight management.

 
The take-away set meal consists of a generous portion of thunder tea rice (I normally go for brown rice), fried tofu with minced meat filling and basil omelette. The concentrated tea mixture will be placed in a separate bowl container. I’d fill it with hot water, give it a good stir and then pour over the rice and ingredients. Mix everything up and enjoy.

If it’s your first time eating thunder tea rice, then I’d suggest you taste the soup first to see if you like it before pouring over your rice.

I love the different layers and textures present. The crisp of the fried anchovies (ikan billis) combined with the crunch of the long beans, peanuts and other vegetables is formidable. The various flavours that burst in your mouth are surprisingly complementing one another. And the aroma from the basil and mint in the tea soup really tingles your taste buds too.

The side dishes of tofu and omelette are worth a mention too, though they are extremely greasy. The special chilli sauce that comes with them has a soury spicy kick to it that kind of resembles the chilli sauce for oyster omelette but is much better than that. Dipping the tofu and omelette in the chilli sauce just makes it so addictive for me.

At just $6.00 for the set meal, you’re guaranteed with a scrumptious, wholesome and very healthy meal. Say bye bye to constipation! Fibre rocks.

I remembered I was first introduced to Pu Tien several years back by my ‘PK mum’ (an endearing term for a friend who calls me PK aka Pumpkin) as she was raving about its Lor Mee. In my mind, Lor Mee has always been a bowl of thick flat yellow noodles in a thick, dark and starchy sauce with ingredients like fish cake, pork belly and hard boiled eggs. But it is not so at Pu Tien, to my surprise (and delight) since I’m not a big fan of the local Lor Mee.

Pu Tien Restaurant is named after Putian which is a coastal town located in the Fujian Province of China and it serves local cuisine of the Xinghua people (兴化人).

I have dined at Pu Tien a couple of times at different outlets and food quality has been consistent so far. And since I’m also trying to expose my husband to different food culture and cuisines here, Pu Tien is definitely a place not to be missed.

 

 
Egg plants have never tasted this good! Big chunks of egg plants deep-fried to perfection and topped with fragrant pork floss all over. Really addictive. I just love the crispy exterior and the inside is so tender.

 
And this is what we are here for. Silky rice noodles with pork belly, prawns, clams, dried tofu puffs and veggies braised in a rich, aromatic pork broth. Not overly starchy and just so tasty!

 
Another must-try signature dish. Pig trotters are deep fried to crisp and seasoned with salt and pepper. I know of some people who find pig trotters revolting because they are considered high in fat and cholesterol but in actual fact, pig trotters are very rich in collagen which is good for the skin as well as gelatin that promotes growth of healthy hair and nails. Whether these nutritional bonuses are really true or not, enjoying this dish in moderation once in a while should be fine. Even though these trotters are deep fried, they aren’t greasy at all!
