Great Ribs and Tequila Prawns! Smile Feb 18, 2014

My friends and I were here on a Sunday afternoon for lunch and the place was pretty filled up. The restaurant was big and spacious with indoor and outdoor seats. One side of the restaurant was entirely a window view, hence a lot of sunlight filled up the restaurant making it bright and nice, I really liked it.

We ordered the Ocean Feast Platter to be shared among the 6 of us, consisting of full slab ribs, 3 corn muffins, 3 grilled corn on cob, tequila grilled prawns, sausages, fish & chips and salad.

We chose to have hickory bbq sauce for the ribs. The sauce was good and the meat was flavourful, moist and tender, coming off the bones really easily. The tequila prawns were grilled but still retained it's moist and bounciness, the taste was different from the normal grilled prawns. This was good. Sausages were also moist and bouncy. Corn muffin, fish and chips were ok.

We also ordered the Virgin Apple Mojito which was refreshing with its mint leaves, tasting just like an unalcoholic version of mojito. This was good!

Those craving for ribs should definitely come here for a try! Fans of prawns should also try out their Tequila Grilled Prawns smile

Wanted to try out this place when I walked past the branch at Causeway Point but was extremely crowded then, so I was delighted to find that there's a newly opened branch at Vivo!

Their offerings are Chinese food like lamian, xiao long bao, dumplings and other side dishes. The whole place was huge with many tables and seats in there, but don't worry they are not close together so it still feels very spacious.

We had the sliced pork lamian in signature pork bone soup, drunken chicken and their signature 8 flavour xiao long bao.

Slice Pork Lamian in Signature Pork Bone Soup
This is really comfort food to me. Featuring lamian with a texture and bite that was just right, 5 big slices of pork, a generous portion of seaweed, half an egg (flavourful and the yolk was still a little runny, perfect!) and xiao bai cai, I thought this bowl was perfect in every way. It provides carbs, substantial amount of veg and protein in a very lovely and comforting broth. However I personally prefer if the pork slices were a little more fatty, which will give the meat more flavour and tenderness as I find it quite dry and tough. Other than that, this dish is great and I'd definitely order it again.

Signature 8 Flavour Xiao Long Bao
The 8 flavours are original, ginseng, foie gras, black truffle, cheese, garlic, crab roe, szechuan. I tried these 4 flavours --> Original: not very nice, I still prefer Crystal Jade's. Black Truffle: the soup had a hint of truffle, I quite liked it. Crab Roe: I could taste and see a little of the roe. Garlic: had a subtle garlicky taste. Overall the flavours are all quite light, a stronger taste would be good for me. These are worth a try but I feel that it's nothing memorable on the whole.

Drunken Chicken
I've always loved this dish hence I ordered it when I saw it on their menu. Served cold, the chicken leg doused with wine was nice and did not deviate from how it should taste like. The chicken could be more tender though.

They have many other lamian offerings and I'll be back to try them! smile Do note that plain water is chargeable at 30cents.

Fresh sashimi! Smile Feb 05, 2014

Categories : Japanese | Sushi/Sashimi

Was craving for sashimi and this is my go-to place when I want to have loads of fresh sashimi! For those who have not heard of Sakuraya Fish Mart, this is a pretty casual restaurant offering yummy Japanese dishes, sushi etc, but what makes them different is their sashimi. Instead of ordering a plate from the menu, you have to go to the cold storage area where they place all their fresh sashimi, from salmon to tako (octopus) to swordfish to uni (sea urchin) and hotate (scallops) etc. You pick the piece that you want (e.g. some salmon slabs are 162g, 174g or 186g and you just see how big a piece you want), pass it to the staff and they'll slice it up and serve it to your table. This only means that you get more sashimi at a cheaper price!! smile

My bf and I shared the salmon & tako sashimi & braised eel in egg soup, and each of us had the rice set ($4). The rice set consisted of rice, miso soup & an appetizer. Miso soup had a decent amount of tofu cubes and seaweed, and the appetizer that day was a cold dish of radish cubes, kelp and sliced carrots. The appetizer was very small but the vegetables had absorbed all the sauce and was very flavourful.

Salmon $15 & Tako $8 Sashimi
Thickness of the sashimi was sliced just right and both were fresh. Don't have much to say about this except YUM!! smile

Braised Eel in Egg Soup $12
The portion for this was more than enough for 2 persons. It was not soup per se but basically pieces of braised eel cooked in egg. The egg was not cooked fully hence the texture was really nice and soft. The doneness of the egg was perfect! The egg soup was sweet and savoury, which goes really well with rice. In fact, it's one of those dishes that makes you want to eat more rice!

It's not my first time here and I'll definitely be going back again and again!

Sushi Tei has always been one of my fav sushi places. I had a heavy breakfast and was looking for something small to have for lunch, hence I headed to Sushi Tei with my friend.

Salmon Sashimi
I don't usually order salmon sashimi when I'm at Sushi Tei, since I usually get my fix at Sakuraya Fish Mart. However I was craving for it and was surprised that it tastes just as good as the ones from Sakuraya (somehow I always had the impression that the sashimi from Sakuraya would be fresher). There were 5 big slices for $8, and the sashimi was nice and soft. Yum yum lol

Aburi Salmon Sushi
I ALWAYS order this when I'm at Sushi Tei, even though I feel that it does not taste as good as it used to. For those who have not come across this sushi before, it features salmon that has been seared at the top, with 2 salmon roes. I've always loved aburi salmon because you get to taste the nice soft raw salmon but the seared side also gives a more intense flavour - the best of both worlds! smile

Some may not know but Marche has also jumped onto the 'value lunch set' bandwagon - there are different options everyday and the menu also changes from week to week! You can check out the menu here http://www.marche-restaurants.com/en/marche-vivocity. All their lunch sets are $8.90+ inclusive of drinks, where there're quite a few options for you to choose from such as lemon tea, lemonade, apple tea etc.

For one of the days, they offered Roast chicken with brown sauce with a side of baked potato topped with sour cream and bacon. The portion was huge (half a small chicken) and hence, super worth it! And the important thing is that the chicken was really tender and moist, and the chicken skin had already absorbed all the spices it had been marinated in. I think there was no need for the brown sauce as it was already good on it's own!

The baked potato was also good, soft enough with a nice buttery texture and sufficient sour cream and bacon toppings. There was really nothing to fault about this dish smile
