Of local favorites Smile Nov 27, 2014

The new kid on the block is starting to gain popularity with their signature local favorites and very reasonable prices. It is setting itself apart from the usual cafe fares of egg bens and pastas which I feel is a refreshing direction of creating its own unique identity.

You cant go wrong with the glutinious rice and yam cake ($3.80). These two traditional local treats are made so delicious and gives me the feel of homecooked meals.

Love the minimilistic feel of the cafe, simple and cozy that I feel so comfortable with, a good place to sit, laze and watch the world.

Fried Food Paradise Smile Nov 27, 2014

Categories : Café

Been hearing raving reviews of Sin Lee's food and I have to be there to try it for myself. The cafe is juz a short distance from Tiong Bahru Plaza in a quiet neighborhood.

The cafe signature Fried Chicken and Waffles are seen at almost every table, seems everyone is here for that. Love the waffles, airy and crispy, but I cant say the same about the fried chicken. Personally I find the chicken not too bad but nothing out of the extraordinary. It is a huge piece of chicken, too much for me for fried food. It sorts of get too oily and heavy on me. Next time I would just have the waffles for dessert.

The salted egg sweet potato fries are very addictive and delicious! I personally love this and would come back for this dish alone! It is amazing to see how well the ingredients blend so perfectly to create this taste.

The Soft shell bun is another crowd puller. The bun is soft and flavourful with a big portion of the soft shell crab. The fries are a tad too salty though.

Oishi!!! Smile Mar 25, 2014

Tamoya is famed to be the Home of Udon in Japan, and I'm just so happy that it came to Singapore! Ordering is a simple self service process. Choose your udon, then choose your sides, pay for your food, and add the condiments available free that you like! Condiments include seaweed, green onions, ginger, plums, chilli flakes etc, but I forgot to take a photo after adding all the condiments! (The photo is taken before we added the condiments into the udon!) Free soup refills are available too, as well as free ice water!

We had the regular bowl of the signature Kake Udon ($5.15), one hot and one cold. The udon is fresh, chewy and springy and the soup is flavourful and delicious! The cold udon is chilled, refreshing and shiok, while the hot one is as awesome! Both of us shared 5 sides including the Prawn Tempura ($2.65), Shitake Mushroom ($1), Croquette ($1.60), Kakiage ($2.15), Chikuwa Tempura ($1.60), and we really enjoyed them! The prawn tempura and shitake mushroom is really delicious to the max, even for someone like me who dont usually like prawns and mushroom, I couldnt resist eating them! That is how nice it is! The Kakiage vegetable tempura is tagged as the most popular item in the house, and it indeed is crispy tasty goodness! The Chikuwa (fishcake) Tempura is very nice and chewy! However, the croquette is quite normal though, next time I would try other sides instead.

The Regular bowl of udon and these yummy sides are really filling and satisfying. If you are very hungry, you can always order the Large bowl and more sides! I like this way of ordering the food, order what you can eat and what you like! After finishing your meal, clear your trays to the tray return station, it is really great to see everyone doing that after their meals! On a sidenote, I wonder why people just refused to clear their trays in foodcourts and fast food restaurants.

Anyway, I thoroughly enjoyed the udon and tempura here, and I will be back for more, and to try out other udons and sides! They definitely serve fresh and delicious udon!

This has been my all time favourite place for hong kong food especially their roasted meats and soya sauce chicken! I go there quite frequently and the standard of the food has been good and consistent.

Another reason why I like to dine here is because it is very big, open and spacious. I don't know exactly why but the the big restaurant gives me a very relaxed and comfortable feel, and I know I can enjoy a slow and relaxing meal at my own pace without feeling pressured and without rushing. The ambience is nice and peaceful, as it is not very noisy like it is with most chinese restaurants, even when it is serving a big crowd, I guess it probably has to do with the open concept and layout of the restaurant.

I love the soya sauce chicken here. You can have it with rice or noodles, depending on your craving. I usually have the dry version of the soya sauce chicken noodles. The chicken is fragrant, smooth and tender while the noodles are very springy, I like the sauce on the noodles, it makes it so delicious! Prices are quite reasonable here, the soya sauce chicken noodles is $7.

The char siew rice is the must have here, their char siew is roasted to perfection, and is succulent and juicy. This is the type of char siew that I like, as I find it close to the tastes of the char siew in HK. We took the set meal which comes with a drink at $7.50. I have also tried the roasted pork and roasted duck here, it is really good, you wont go wrong with the roasted meats here.

The soup version of the soya sauce chicken noodles is awesome as well. The noodles are still as springy even in the nice and flavourful soup. Sometimes, having this soup noodles really warms my stomach and heart, very yummy!

Sometimes, I will add on my order with a plate of very yummy carrot cake, but it is not always available though. The carrot cake is really tasty, authentic hk style!

Another favourite is the wanton noodles. The noodles here are the typical HK style springy noodles and they taste extremely good in soup as in they remain springly and will not turn soggy even after a long time. The big wantons with fresh prawn is nice and juicy.

If you are looking for authentic hk food at reasonable prices, this is definitely the place to go!

Perfect High Tea Choice! Smile Mar 24, 2014

Categories : Multi-Cuisine | Hotel | High Tea | Dim Sum | Buffet

Have heard much about the English Afternoon Tea at Goodwood Park L'Espresso, and we finally had the chance to try out the high tea on a week day a few months back when all three of us were free. The high tea is from 2pm to 530pm while it has two seatings on fridays and weekends. At $45++, it was a hefty price tag, but it was all worth it, as we really enjoyed the quality food and the nice ambience!

Each person is entitled to two choices of drinks from the drinks menu. We all had hot tea for our first drink, and for the second drink we had a coffee, an Iced Tea and a Cold Chocolate. I like both the Iced Tea and the Cold Chocolate! The Iced Tea is really nice and refreshing! However, the Cold Chocolate proved too full for me, as I was already very full from the food. Next time, teas whether iced or hot will be a better choice.

There was a wide range of food ranging from sweet to the savory, including very delicious canapes, assorted finger sandwiches, cheeses, delightful pretty cakes, bread pudding, sweet desserts, fried finger food selection, bagels, crossionts, scones, fruits, chocolate fountain, ice cream and all that you can find in a high tea buffet. But the main thing that kept us going wow was the really yummy finger sandwiches, whether you like salmon, chicken, tuna, prawn, beef, ham, foie gras etc, in smoked, raw or roast form, it's all there for you. We simply loved the delicious yet prettily and creatively decorated sandwiches and open face sandwiches. The canapes was great as well! Just by eating these sandwiches and canapes was more than enough for us, we didnt even have enough space in our stomachs to contain more food! We just wanted to keep eating and eating the sandwiches but we had our limits! Too full! We even joked that we should pack the sandwiches home! That was how nice it was to us! And not even one of us is a sandwich person, we normally like pastas more!

The cakes are quite normal and average, as compared to the sandwiches and canapes. Or maybe we just loved the sandwiches too much that we couldnt really appreciate the cakes. I quite like the fried food selection too, if you feel you are having too much of the sandwiches and cakes stuff, the fried food selection can be a breather. As is the name, this high tea is the type of english afternoon tea with sandwiches, scones, cakes and the likes. If you are looking for mains or more savoury stuff, look elsewhere.

I like the ambience of the place, enjoying our food and sipping our tea, and looking out at the pool view, it is all but a very relaxing and enjoyable high tea session. This is definitely a great place for high tea, and a fantastic chillout place with your friends, with quality food and nice ambience. I hope to arrange a date with my besties soon for the high tea again, for I'm missing their sandwiches really badly!
