Unique Cupcakes OK Mar 27, 2014

If you're a "cupcake-holic", you may want to check out the sugary treats from Da Paolo!

The texture of the frosting of the above 2 cupcakes is similar and quite unique - a little "sticky", not so creamy and soft like the usual cupcake frosting. The flavour combination is quite unique, but I did not really like the Orange flavoured cupcake.

Meringue frosting on a cupcake? That unique differentiation from those mainstream cupcakes is definitely a plus point.
I like the lemon meringue cupcake, not too sweet nor sour, albeit a bit dry. But the overall taste made up for the shortcoming of the moistness of the cake.

Awesome Beef Noodles Smile Mar 27, 2014

Categories : Cantonese/Hong Kong | Chinese Desserts | Desserts and Cakes

HK Sheng Kee doesn't only do desserts; they whip up a great variety of HK savoury noodles and snacks!

Be sure to also order their Minced Pork Noodles (Dry) and Chicken Cutlet Noodles!
HK Braised Beef Noodles (Dry)

HK Braised Beef Noodles (Dry)

Everything is just so perfect about this bowl of Braised Beef Noodles. Noodles were springy, vegetables were fresh, radish so juicy and the beef is tender! The seasoning is on the spot and do remember to add in the green chilli and chilli oil when eating to spice up this already-good-on-its-own dish!
Durian Sago

Durian Sago

If you like durian, this is made for you! Real durian flesh was used in this dessert and the puree is just so creamy and heavenly.
Sesame Paste w/ Rice Balls

Sesame Paste w/ Rice Balls

If you prefer hot desserts, do opt for the Sesame Paste. This sesame paste is robust in flavour and is not diluted nor watery. Order the version with the rice balls in it for an extra treat (sesame rice balls + sesame paste = ultimate combo!)
Yolky Custard Pau

Yolky Custard Pau

Also remember to order the yummy Yolky Custard Pau. Be careful when you bite into this though, because the custard will flow out!!! Extremely sinful treat! Yolk and custard can never go wrong in this combination. If you think the combination is gross, then you're wrong! Eat this and you'll never regret it!

Waffles that makes you go 'Whoa'! Smile Mar 27, 2014

Categories : Café | Desserts and Cakes

Hatter Street is a whimsical cafe located in a quiet HDB estate in Hougang. They have a variety of pastries and drinks to choose from, but my friend and I decided to share their signature 'Whoa'ffles ($8.90).

There are 3 variations, but we chose the Singapore-inspired flavour. Pandan ice cream drizzled with Gula Melaka. Sounds extremely sinful and delish!

This might be the best waffle I've ever had so far. The crispy waffles were pretzel-like salted, which balances out the sweetness of the Gula Melaka. The blueberries also helped to tone down on the sweetness. A plus point, because the waffles don't feel too rich or heavy to finish. The Pandan Ice Cream is heaven - reminds me of those old school pandan kueh. Very uniquely Singaporean; a very good fusion dessert! On the down side, the waffles weren't exactly hot when served.

Hidden Gem! Smile Mar 27, 2014
Categories : Pasta | Steaks and Grills

Located in a quiet stretch of shophouses in Kembangan is this casual restaurant that dishes out impressive Western fare.

My friend and I visited the place at about 1.30PM+ and it was empty, hence service was pretty fast.

To complete your meal, add $5 to get a bowl of the Soup of the Day and a drink of your choice.
Forest Mushroom Cappuccino

Forest Mushroom Cappuccino

Soup of the day was Forest Mushroom Cappuccino. Awesome, because my friend and I wanted to try that while we searched for their menu online. Cappuccino used to describe a savoury soup? Intriguing. Soup wasn't too creamy nor rich. Seasoning is done alright, though I would prefer some chunky mushroom bits in it.
Rosemary Chicken

Rosemary Chicken

Initially, I wanted to get the Carbonara or Breaded Dory because I don't really like to eat chicken and those 2 options were the cheapest out of the whole lot. However, after much persuasion from my friend (she told me to try something else different), I got the Rosemary Chicken, which is also the same price as the Carbonara and Breaded Dory. The chicken was served with a mushroom ragout, red wine jus and thick cut fries. Frankly speaking, I did not really like the taste of the gravy (the alcohol taste was a little too overpowering). But the mushrooms and fries were fantastic. The fries were exceptionally delicious. Oh-so-fluffy and crispy!
Waffle w/ Ice Cream & Maple Syrup

Waffle w/ Ice Cream & Maple Syrup

A meal is only complete when you finish it off with a dessert. When I browsed through the menu for the first time, I knew I had to get the Waffles because I love waffles a lot! And true enough, this version doesn't disappoint. Although R&F's waffles are thin (not fluffy at all), it's really crispy and the buttermilk batter was excellent. It was served hot too so when eaten with the ice cold ice cream, the infusion explodes in your mouth - in a good way, haha! mad
Caramelised Banana w/ Vanilla Ice Cream

Caramelised Banana w/ Vanilla Ice Cream

My friend got the Caramelised Bananas. Nothing outstanding, I would say, because I am not a fan of bananas. The combination of the ice cream and the caramel had a weird sticky texture.
Supplementary Information:
All prices are nett, so eat to your heart's (or rather, your stomach's) content! :-)

Filling Brunch! Smile Mar 27, 2014
Categories : European | Café | Desserts and Cakes

Do visit Lola's Cafe early to grab your seats because it's really packed with people! That's a good sign because many people = good food! Let me share with you some of the dishes I like from Lola's Cafe!
Farmer's Bratwurst Roll

Farmer's Bratwurst Roll

From the brunch menu, I got the Farmer's Bratwurst Roll. It's a pork sausage in between a sweet bun, drizzled with tomato and nacho cheese sauce, with potato fries on the side. I like the sausage because it has a strong smokey flavour, which is something essential I look out for in a good sausage. The accompanying sauce was delish, although I couldn't really taste the nacho cheese sauce. Fries were crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. A very filling dish, considering the amount of carbs they give!
Avocado Eggs Benedict

Avocado Eggs Benedict

My friend got himself the Avocado Eggs Benedict, which comprises of 2 brioche bread, avocado, poached eggs, Hollandaise sauce and garden salad in Balsamic dressing on the side. Not too bad with the flavours, although I think it's a little pricey.
Mushroom Melt

Mushroom Melt

If you're a fan of cheese and don't mind having a really jelak meal, then get this Mushroom Melt. Brioche bread with Swiss white mushroom, mozzarella cheese, cream and garden in Balsamic dressing on the side. Gets too heavy after a while, which gives the impression of a huge portion. I like the mushroom-y taste, though.
Honey Paprika Crispy Wings

Honey Paprika Crispy Wings

This incredible starter, which was unfortunately served after our main course, is to die for! Wings were hot when served and the skin was crispy and delish! The seasoning wasn't too overpowering and it works with the wings so well. A must get dish!
