Song Kee Fishball Noodle - Upper Thomson Road

Being one of the top fishball noodle stall in Singapore, Song Kee fishball noodle is well liked by both the old and young for its handmade fishballs. It is popular among the supper crowd as well as it opens till late night about 2pm or till the fishballs are sold out. Queue starts at around 630pm before it open for business at 7pm.

Queue up to make your order

Mee Pok Dry ($6 big) - The big portion includes 3 large fishballs, 3 dumplings and 2 stuffed tau pok. All the ingredients are handmade fresh daily. You get to choose whether to add ketchup or chili sauce. I like all 3 ingredients especially the dumpling which was thinly wrapped with a unique flavoured pork and mushroom mixture. The tau pok was stuffed with an adequate amount of fish paste as well. Mee pok noodle was good as well without yellow noodle aftertaste.

Mee Tai Bak Dry ($4 small) - 3 fishballs, 1 dumpling and 1 tau pok

Home-made dumpling filled with minced pork and mushroom, tasty and delicious.

Hand-made fishball taste nice as well. The fishball is more firm compared to those machine made and you are able to taste the sweetness of the fishball itself.

Clear soup filled with fishball taste

Do drop by for your bowl of satisfying fishball noodle if you are at Upper Serangoon region.

Verdict: 3.5/5

Price: $4 - $6

West Co'z Cafe (West Coast Plaza) Smile Jan 29, 2015
Share on TwitterShare on Facebook
Categories : Thai | Café | Zi Char | Kids-Friendly

Located in west coast plaza, West Co'z Café serve fusion food that is Halal and mixture of Chinese and Thai foods. Most of their dishes are offered at an affordable price. It is recommend to make reservation before having your meal there as the queue is quite long during weekend. Waiting time can be up to 30mins to 1 hour. It is a nice place to dine in with your family.

Curry Fish Head ($20) - Spicy and savory, this curry fish head is delicious. For this price, half of the fish head is served with lots of side ingredients like long beans, lady finger, tau pok and egg plant. The fish head is fresh and the meat is firm and tender, together with the curry sauce, it taste good. Simply must order.

Salted Egg Sotong ($12) - I like salted egg dish, this is one of the best. The Sotong are fried crispy, making its texture chewy. Together with the salted egg sauce, this is a very evil dish to have, but who cares right? Just eat it!!

Thai Style Kangkong ($9) - Abit spicy, the kangkong are washed thoroughly, hence there are no sandy feeling while chewing. The kangkong are stir fry with preserved beans, hence its spicy and sourly, very appetizing

Braised beancurd ($15) - Fried Beancurd with savory sauce and lots of vegetables on the sides. The beancurd is lightly fried on the outside, you can taste the softness of the beancurd. Lots of sliced cabbage, mushroom and carrot.

Prawn Paste Chicken ($10) - Juicy meat on the inside of the wings, delicious prawn paste chicken

Egg Fu Yong ($8) - This dish impressed me much as it is not oily and the interior of the egg is moist and soft. This really test the cook's skill and how he handle the amount of heat require to cook this egg. Lots of prawn bits are found in it.

Verdict: 4/5

Nice place to have dinner, i liked the curry fish head the most. The strong curry is really nice to eat together with white rice. In addition, the fish head is fresh at a low price. Other dishes fare good as well.

Long waiting list if you want to drop by to have your dinner, so just make reservation. They have calling system to inform you if your table is ready. So take your time to shop around the shopping mall.

Presenting to you Sunday Folks, the same group of people who created creamier. The difference between these 2 cafes are that Sunday Folks serve only 6 different flavours of ice cream and assorted cakes compare to its counterpart. In addition, the ice cream here are more like softee, soft ice cream.

The queue can be crazily long. When i came today, the queue stretch out to the outside. There is no queuing system and the tables are so limited, you just have to find a seat before you queue to order or just take away. Well, as Holland V MRT is just near its vicinity, now this place is very accessible. No wonder the crowd are drawn to here. Their signature flavours for the ice cream are sea salt gula melaka, dark chocolate, madagascar vanilla, roasted pistachio and summer strawberries. For me, i prefer the sea salt gula melaka and roasted pistachio.

Cakes are available for order at the counter. If waffles aren’t quite your thing, there are other offerings too. We spotted roasted pistachio ice-cream (from $6.90) being whisked from the kitchen, and this was served in a chocolate cone and topped off with pistachio nuts and a pastry stick. Cakes were on hand too, like a Japanese matcha cake ($7.90), matcha roll ($6.90), and cheesecake ($6.90), which were highly tempting.

Different type of topping. You can refer to the menu for the type of topping that you like. Different set of topping are charged differently. But, all types are good.

Order number, your order will be served shortly (hopefully...)

Pistachio ice cream waffles dripped with maple syrup. I have no complaint on the ice cream and the soft waffles that simply melt in your mouth, but the decoration of fruits with chocolate and maple syrup obviously shown that these are pre-made waiting for the waffles and ice cream to be served. Utterly disappointing in terms of service.

Operating hour: 12:00 - 22:00

Verdict: 3.5/5

It is a cosy place to chill out with friends and family members. I know my verdict are abit low compare to others. Firstly, the service is slow and shaky, tables are not clean promptly nor wipe till one of the staff with table cloth that goes around wiping table.

Ordering service is draggingggggggggg, hence resulted in the long queue. Things can be done faster if the counter staffs are more quick handed. Cutleries and cups are not properly clean, i can find stain everywhere.

The only score point is the standard of the ice cream and waffles which i am satisfied. Other than that, i will think twice when to come here again.

YY Kafei Dian 喜园咖啡店 - Beach Road/Purvis Street

A crowded and busy old school Hainanese coffee shop located right at the end of Purvis street.

Make your order for all food and drinks at the counter.

Range of old school breakfast on display: Assorted breads, donuts, sugar cookies and muffins.

Back to the 60's chinese coffeeshop setting

Kopi, thick toast and half-boiled eggs ($4.90) - Thick toast was soft and fluffy on the interior with generous spread of home-made kaya and a thick slice of butter.

Typical Hainanese breakfast of early days

Hainanese chicken Rice ($4.00) - Both the steamed white chicken and roasted chicken were tender and rice was fragrant yet not oily. Overall food was on the salty side.

Verdict: 3.5/5

YY Kafei Dian sells a wide selection of Hainanese food which are equivalent to our typical local food. Zi cha menu is available as well for evening crowds.

Ichi Tei Japanese Bento & Udon Smile Jan 29, 2015
Share on TwitterShare on Facebook
Categories : Japanese | Ramen

Uncovering the great food that are available in Sunshine Plaza beside Victor's kitchen and Wanton mee. Ichi Tei Japanese Bento & Udon, which is located just beside Parklane Zha Yun Tun (Wanton) Mee House offer affordable Japanese food with good quality.

Ichi Tei Japanese Bento & Udon is a small shop that cater 5 tables of customers only, hence be prepared to wait if the shop is full or you are with more than 4 people as there won't be any table that can sit large group of customers.

From the menu, spoiled of choice from Don to udon to Sashimi that are available for ordering. However, do remember to check for the type of sashimi that are available for the day as it may differ depending on supply.

Sides and drinks

Sashimi Moriawase ($18) - 3 different kind of sashimi served, we have HUGE pieces of salmon, swordfish (white colour thingy that you seeon top) and clam ( the one in red which i presume). Fresh and sweet, are the 2 words that came to my mind. Spread some wasabi on the sashimi to kill off bacteria.

Chawanmushi ($2.50) - Nice little pot of steamed egg with chicken meat and narutomaki fish cakes

Chicken Teriyaki Don ( $7.50) - This is one of the popular dish which you must order and try. The Chicken meat is grilled in the oven and this really test the skill of the chef. The top layer of the chicken was grilled to slightly charred and at the same time the meat is fully cooked and succulent. The teriyaki sauce which was then pour over the meat and seep onto the rice, making it fragrant and savory. Each bite on the meat making me to want more!!

Thick meat chuck!!!

Opening Hours: Daily 11am – 8.30pm (Closed on Sun)

Verdict: 4 /5

I really love their food, the quality is high and price is pretty much affordable too compare to other Japanese restaurant that offer similar range of japanese food. Service is prompt and fast, i didnt have to wait for too long for my food.

The only concern i have should be the ventilation. Poor ventilation and i smell of food after I left that shop. Other than that, the rest met my standard.

I will definitely come back again, maybe not when i am working in my office wear.
