Herbal Kuay Chap  Smile Mar 24, 2014

Stepped right in to enjoy the fragrant & the tasty Herbal Kuay Chap...
Foodfare Front Door

This stall had been here for many years. The one next to it had been changed more than 4 times! This showed the popularity & the quality of the food served must have been very good in order for it to stayed for so long.

I know it was a very popular Duck Rice chained stall. However, it was the Herbal Kuay Chap that had attracted me here again & again. The first time I was here because I was feeling weak & wanted to boost up my health with some herbal soup.

I was very surprised of the quality of the ingredients served here. For the price of only $3.80...

The bowl was generously filled with smooth, soft & easy to swallow Kuay. The staff didn't even flinch whenever I asked for more soup!
The chunky pieces of Braised Pork were chewy & the fat was not "gerlat"...
The Pig Skin (pure collagen...) tasted springy & flavourful & was very clean (not a hair in sight)...
The taupok was not soggy & was completely soaked with the herbal fragrance thick sauce...
The texture of the egg yolk was just nice, not dry & powdery...
The pieces of braised intestine was soft & was thouroughly cleaned of any foul taste...
The big fish cake pieces were chewy & springy...
Another worth mentioning was the chilli...the bright orangy-red one had a little lime taste while the dark red one was the powerhouse...
My favorite way of enjoying it was to have both in the same sauce plate.

Verdict: chopstick chopstick chopstick

I never failed to come here as often as I could when I feel like some herbal soup infusing.

A Vegetarian Supper Smile Mar 24, 2014

Categories : Singaporean | Hawker Centre | Stall / Kiosk

It was already 10.45pm when I picked up hubby from work. On our way home, we stopped over at Bedok Interchange for a little supper.
The massive reconstruction was still ongoing. We could still hear the workers over the other side of the fence as we entered the Hawker Centre. There were notably lesser stalls that remained opened at this hours. At its prime, one could hardly find an empty table on any Friday.

This vegetarian stall had managed to hold back the price increase for the past few years, until recently. However, it was still a crowd magnet with its fresh ingredients, friendly staff & easy access (operating daily from 5am to 11pm). They also didn't charge extra for the takeaways.

This plate of bee hoon that I bought only cost $2.80. All the dishes were still warm despite the late hours. The veggies were not soggy & the sauces was just nice, not too salty nor too oily. One could still taste a hint of coconut milk in the curry. The mock meat were chewy & tasted like the real thing. Especially liked the Chilli paste, tangy & very spicy. Yum!

Verdict: chopstickchopstickchopstick

It was no doubt our kind of cheap & good hawker vegetarian food.

The Magic Stick Cheese Smile Mar 16, 2014
Share on TwitterShare on Facebook
Categories : Bakery

We usually come to Bedok Point for great Body Spa or Foot Reflexology sessions. Yesterday's trip was to shop for our daughter's sunglasses & I, to redeem a free haircut. So hubby & daughter went shopping while I was having my hair done. When we finally meet up, he told me of a bakery with very generous chunky sampling pieces. I was curious to find out how generous could any shop offer in this very expensive shoppers' & foodists' paradise named Singapore?!

So he led me down to the Ground Floor. The bakery was located just next to the escalator & it was already filled with a sizable crowd. We went closer to take a look.
The store was rather small but it was clean. There were 2 rows of shelves leaning back-to-back with only 1 level of trays where the breads were showcased. The customer traffic was flowing oneway, towards the cashier counter (a very simple & effective retail strategy).
At the outer corner of the counter, a young lady was busy cutting up chuncky pieces of bread & refilling up the sampling trays. There were 2 staff at the cashier counter but only 1 cash register. One young lady staff was helping to slice the bread (upon customer's request) & bagging them up while the other attended to the customers at the cash register. All the staffs were wearing gloves.

We managed to blend into the traffic but to my horror...I saw people picking up the chunky samples with their bare fingers! Gosh...I seriously thought the owner should consider spending a little more & to stick a toothpick into each chunky sample pieces (even the huge supermarkets do that, nowadays)...

After trying out a few varieties, we finally settled to have the Magic Stick Cheese & the French Garlic Soft Bread. The Magic Stick Cheese (in the tray) looked as if there were cubes of cheese embedded into the loaves while the French Garlic Soft Bread was quite plain looking with only herb-powder baked onto the loaves.
Breads in the trays...

We didn't have time to settle down & to enjoy the breads till it was supper time. Both hubby & I were very surprised to find the mountainful of cubed cheese inside our loaf!
Magic Stick Cheese 魔杖起司 ($4.50)

Magic Stick Cheese 魔杖起司 ($4.50)

The bread itself tasted soft, chewy & springy (QQ) at the same time.
I considered myself very choosy with bread but I could simply ate this on its own!
Discerning eaters would be able to pick up the subtle sweetness and would also conclude that the bread must have been meticulously hand-baked with the finest & freshest ingredients.

The cubed cheese were soft & did not stick to my teeth at all. Hmm...wondered if that was how this loaf was named, the "Magic Stick Cheese"...

Verdict: chopstick chopstick chopstick
Hubby & I decided that we must get their Membership Card today!

Sweet Potato Porridge OK Mar 16, 2014

Categories : Singaporean | Chinese | Hawker Centre | Rice

Changi Village was quiet for an ordinary weekday afternoon. We came here for our Chalet Stay & was feeling lazy to cook on the second day. So we drove over to this foodist heaven for a late afternoon bite. This stall captured our attention as it was serving Sweet Potato Porridge.
Sweet Potato Porridge

Sweet Potato Porridge

The rice in the porridge had flowered (indicating that it was well cooked) & the soft sweet potato were not mushy. I would have say that this was a great eat if it was much hotter when it was served to us.

Afternote: Hubby said the 2nd bowl of Sweet Potato Porridge was hot & he enjoyed it very much.

We were not exactly spoiled for choices but were quite undecisive of what to order. All the dishes looked quite tempting. So we ended up with the followings...
Braised Pork with Taupok

Braised Pork with Taupok

I didn't eat this dish as I had Kuay Chap just the day before so hubby finished it. He said it just tasted so-so.
Stirfry Long Beans with Garlic

Stirfry Long Beans with Garlic

We found the long beans were rather soggy. The fragrance of the garlic actually stole the limelight of this dish.
Sambal Brinjal

Sambal Brinjal

I loved the Sambal Brinjals but would preferred them to be in smaller chunks. The brinjals were firm, the skin was easy to bite through & the chilli was not overpowering.
Sweet & Sour Pork

Sweet & Sour Pork

I've always liked eating Sweet & Sour Pork (咕噜肉), especially when they were stirfried with tangy sweet pineapples & fresh, crunchy cucumbers as in this case. This dish was cooked just the way I liked it. The cook used pork that were not too streaky & not too fat. It was well marinated. The sweet & sour sauce coated well to all the ingredients. It was good that the main ingredients were cubed of the same size for a nice eating experience.

Overall, it was a nice experience eating here.

Verdict: chopstickchopstick
I would suggest to eat here during proper meal hours so the temperature of the porridge would be kept consistently hot & the texture of the cooked veggies would still be crunchy.

I'm always on the lookout for great tasting braised beef brisket noodles (牛腩面), guessed I've found it, in this oridinary Kopitiam Food Court. lol

Hong Kong Style Beef Brisket Noodles 港式牛腩面 ($5.50)

Hong Kong Style Beef Brisket Noodles 港式牛腩面 ($5.50)

My Humble Opinion:
~ the handmade noodles were cooked to al dente...
~ the blanched Baby Kai Lan were very fresh & crunchy...
~ the dash of oyster sauce did not overpower the natural sweetness of the veggie...
~ the chunky & super-flavourful braised beef briskets were completely tenderized...
~ the tendons (pure collagen) had been gelatinised...
Each mouthful was effortless to eat & swallow, a heavenly combination even for the seniors!

Hmm...
This stall should be crowned as serving the Best Hong Kong Style Beef Brisket Noodles (港式牛腩面) in Tampines!

Verdict: chopstick chopstick chopstick
