Place to go for Steak Craving Smile Apr 20, 2012

Categories : American | Steaks and Grills

This being the 3rd time I tried Jack's Place, I haven't been discouraged from going back yet. Each time, I've been a customer at a different branch. Their service at this branch is quite impeccable. Despite being seated at the table quite early (6pm), they were very courteous and diligent on refilling water glasses all throughout the night.

It was a nice place to chill for the night. Had the following paired with a glass of red wine!

This is the first time I had dinner at Jack's Place, though. Previously, I had only gone in the morning.

The escargot was presented rather nicely. However, I felt that the garlic taste could be stronger. The garlic pieces were really well done so they eventually became garlic chips. I could be wrong, but it felt like they used oil and not butter (normally) with their escargots as the aroma didn't seem that way.

There was garlic bread on the house, but it wasn't enough and it didn't seem right to eat them with the garlic chips that were on the plate.

The lobster with cheese on top had a different taste. I really like how Jack's Place has their own house sour cream. Though it has been their way with the baked potato for years, I do wish they had the option of adding cheese to it. It would be perfect then.

Had asked for the steak to be done "medium", but I feel that maybe I should I ask for "medium rare" in the future. Is that scary? shocked Maybe the cooks should keep in mind that the steak is served on a hot plate and that by the time I had a few bites, it was pretty much done. sad

Delightful Meal Smile Nov 28, 2013

The last time I had the Black Sheep Cafe was in their older establishment in Bugis, though it's situated in a corner of the basement of a condo, I was surprised to find that lighting was still ample and there were window seats so it didn't feel claustrophobic at all.

I was also surprised to see that they had more staff so it isn't as cozy as it used to be, but they now have a prominent bar area.
I came on a weekend so there was no lunch set menu, but I believe it's a good deal to go there for lunch then sit there and have tea to either chill or to study. I miss their dinner set menus that they used to have though.

The total meal cost about $150 which included escargot, 4 main courses, and 2 desserts. Black Sheep Cafe does not include GST and Service Charge smile That's really worth it considering the cuisine, environment, and quality of the food!
Escargot

Escargot

Escargot was very huge, however the garlic and butter did not get infused in the meat, so it wasn't particularly tasty.
Duck Confit

Duck Confit

We ordered two portions of the duck confit ($26.50 each). The mashed potatos were done very nicely as my sister kept on trying to take them from me (none of that instant stuff). What's in the spoon is sort of like a mango salsa which had an indian flavor to it.

My dad ordered the Pork Cheek at $28.50 and said that the pork tasted like ham since it was rather salty shocked I'm not too sure because I didn't want to waste my stomach space and savor every bite of what I had ordered with space for dessert. tongue

Lamb ranks at $38.60 were done very well. I think the picture captures it well cause I'm salivating just looking at it and thinking back

Lemon Cheesecake was just the right thickness that leaned towards an American Cheesecake without being overbearing as the lemon and citrus helped each bite be really refreshing

Tiramisu came with fruits on top and was very generous with the rum (not for the faint hearted alcoholic), but each bite was so good that it was finished up before we had barely begun. The balance of the ingredients inside were just right.

Lunch Sets are such a deal! Smile Nov 25, 2013
Share on TwitterShare on Facebook
Categories : Seafood | Steaks and Grills

I was initially surprised that the restaurant was quite packed, but as long as you come before 1 on weekdays, it doesn't seem like a reservation is necessary.

The interior of the restaurant is nifty, however, the prices seem somewhat exorbitant for dinner. Not sure if they use the same setup for dinner, but the plastic glasses may need to be replaced with either newer ones or glasses. The placemats would also seem to be out of place.

The restaurant have lunch sets for every day of the week! I'm sure the business must be good on the weekends. What is even better is that there is even a student meal for $8.50++ which includes a soft drink, ice cream, soup, and your main course.

I ordered the Beef Lasagna under the Student Meal and my friend had the Ribeye Steak for $19.90. The Ribeye Steak was a Lunch Set Menu choice so it also included soup, coffee/tea, and a dessert.

On the side, we ordered Rock Oysters for $19.90-- the oysters were huge and fresh. Would definitely want to come back for them oysters. lol yum!

The Cream soup was served hot, it would have been better if the bread came toasty warm too. The bread was rather cute as it looked like a chef's hat. The icecream paired well with the chocolate cake. Honestly, wasn't too fond of the chocolate cake dessert as I found it kind of dry, but it was part of the lunch package. The ribeye steak came with a pepper sauce that actually had peppercorns inside. However, I think the Beef Lasagna was a good choice.

Do remember to request for the Student Meal from your waiter and they will give you the menu upon presenting and showing your student ID to them.

The total bill was about $50. For the amount we ate, I would say it's very worth it.

Burritos and Tortillas Smile Apr 05, 2013
Share on TwitterShare on Facebook
Categories : Mexican

Came here for my mexican fix and I was quite pleased mad

The food is a little pricy. I think I about $9 for a chicken burrito.
Opted out of the guacamole since I can buy my own avocado and make it on my own, but I would like to see how much of a portion they'd provide.

Was quite full from the burrito and I chose sour cream and might have chosen the cilantro option too

The burrito comes with tortilla chips. There's a salsa bar within the restaurant where you can top up your salsa to dip your chips or even add it to your burrito. There are 4 different levels of spiciness. Honestly, I couldn't really tell the difference in some, but I'd say get a little and try each of the sauces out to figure out your preference.

Hope that they have enough business to remain in Singapore!

Earl Grey & Pink Guava Smile Apr 05, 2013
Share on TwitterShare on Facebook
Categories : Café | Ice Cream and Gelato

I'm quite crazy and particular about ice cream.
Don't really like the super sweet type or those offered at those mom and pop stores near the bus stops or under the HDB flat.

Anderson's and Ben & Jerry's are also not my cup of tea.

I prefer Haagen Dazs and those home-made or freshly made ice creams.

I heard of Tom's Palette from an article I read that mentioned how there were unique flavors offered there. The few times I went there, there were always different and special flavors. During the Chinese New Year period, they even had seasonal flavors like Red Dates or Lotus..

What made me want to go there was that they offered Tea flavors. In the picture provided, I chose a Earl Grey Tea and Pink Guava combo. The staff there was spectacular and patient for everyone who wants to try flavors and they understand that there's a lot of flavors to choose from. They are also very generous and really pack the icecream in the size that you choose. It's great that with a small at $3.20 you can get plenty of icecream. It is relatively sweet though, so you may want to choose flavors that compliment one another.
