I'm a huge fan of Apple Crumble Pie and I thought that Swensen's would do a decent job, considering they are into ice creams and would have some decent desserts.

The Apple Crumble came on a hot plate and the Vanilla Ice Cream (was indeed Vanilla), but it looked overly yellow. Perhaps there was too much food coloring? We had to check with the waiter to make sure that this was indeed what we ordered.

The apples were far from fresh, felt slightly soggy and somewhat preserved. The butterscotch sauce pictured is actually half of the amount that the waiter initially wanted to pour. Luckily, I stopped him, else, I don't think there would have been much to taste and savor.

The crumble itself tasted like a thick yellow cake and I couldn't taste the cookie bits. This dish was priced at around $15 and I honestly feel that for that value, the eating experience should be better. I'm never ordering any of those hot plates desserts in Swensen's anymore..sad

French/Japanese Cuisine Cry Apr 05, 2013

Categories : French | Japanese | Fusion

From the name I thought the restaurant was French food, but upon scanning the varieties on the menu, it was clear that there was some Japanese flavor to it.

Was there on a weekday during lunch so there were lunch sets available. I believe the specials change everyday. Lunch hour was rather busy and the servers were rather flustered.

I always like to order Escargot whenever it's offered on the menu

Escargot Dish was served hot with the fancy shell holders

Close up of the escargot

The garlic that came with the escargot was rather crisp. I think I prefer escargots served and baked in the oven with butter as opposed to how it was prepared here.

The cheese didn't quite melt in the French Onion soup and I thought that it might have come in the puff pastry. It was rather salty, so the bread was pretty much all gone before I realized that I was on my last bite. It's a pity as i believe the bread would have been a good complement to hte squid ink pasta

The tomato soup was slightly disappointing. It felt like it came in a can. I guess I appreciate it when it feels like a lot of effort is put into the dish that you're consuming. At least it wasn't Cream of Tomato (powder)

I think I was more let down by the main courses

If I don't recall correctly, the Hamburger Steak was one of their specialty/highlights. The meat was composed of minced beef and I guess I was let down by the quality of the meat and presentation of the dish.

The Japanese hardly gets the squid ink wrong as they even sell squid ink pasta in their supermarkets. Mushrooms were a nice addition to the dish, but I felt like there was very little squid pieces.

The fruit tarts look amazing and I saw a lot of people ordering it.
If I go back, I believe that would be on my to order list and I'd probably go there for tea.

Long line.. OK Dec 31, 2013

The store sells a few things that aren't very malay such as 'chezzy fries' (Cheesy fries), and mutton/chicken chop (that looks western).

We ordered the Ikan bilis fried rice and it took quite a while to come, however, the plate arrived fresh from the pan and was hot. Overall, it felt rather salty, so I think it's a good idea to order a plate and share amongst other dishes available in the food court.

Qualms I have about the place is that
1) the food takes quite a while to come
2) there are no price listed on the signboard, so you have to resort to asking the man who delivers your food.

Salmon with rice OK Dec 31, 2013

Categories : Japanese | Food Court

Tanglin Mall is a place to hit up if you're in town and want to go to a food court where the seats aren't too hard to find. The furnishings of the restaurant is rather decent probably because it's nearby to Singapore Tourism Board. However, as it's in town, the prices aren't exactly cheap either. Be prepared to dish out $5-10 for food only.

The Japanese store has a few selections that are available for a little less than $5. One of the dishes is the dish pictured: Salmon with Rice. The way they serve it is easy to replicate at home and to make, however, it's something on the cheaper side in the food court. It's really just salmon with an egg cooked with water, sprinkled with some seaweed.

The taste is rather light so there's not much flavor nor saltiness, and it's served quickly while hot. An option if you don't want to have any fried food or anything that's too sinful within the food court.

Blackballs OK Dec 30, 2013

Categories : Taiwanese | Desserts and Cakes | Juices

Decided to have this dessert for dinner after touring the food hall area. Had a huge lunch so I wanted something to fill the stomach without it being too sinful.
There was no one in the place, but like many places in Singapore, they were advertising they were both popular and originated from Taiwan.

The Taiwan actor caught my attention

The dish presentation did not enticing via their promotional posters

Decided to order their Classic Black Ball Crushed Ice. The picture differed slightly than the dish that came. It was interesting to have a bowl of grass jelly, though it's probably the first thing that disappeared. The red beans was overly sweet and I wasn't too fond of the boba. The yams and taros were decent, but the novelty wore off quickly. I'm glad to say I've tried it, but I don't think I'm going back there anytime soon unless there's 1) no line 2) i need a place to sit and chill
