Vietnamese Fast Food Smile Dec 02, 2012
Categories : Vietnamese | Bakery | Café | Brunch

Due to its history as a French colony, the Vietnamese really know how to make a mean baguette. I tried an authentic baguette when I first touched down during my Vietnam trip and the taste has remained with me ever since.

Here in Singapore, we can get our craving eased at this eatery in Square 2. The Vietnamese bagueete is also known as Bánh mì, literally biscuit (Bánh) or flour (mì) cake. I ordered the signature Saigon baguette and it eased my craving slightly.

However, I thought the filling looked a bit lonely - it would have been nice if they had increased the portion of the ingredients so that one can really sink his or her teeth into it! The one I had in Vietnam was extremely crispy but the one I had was more like a softer bread.

The place has a fast-food concept, eat and throw. I like to say that it is like the French version of Subway. smile I recommend this if you want a healthy option, it's very well balanced with a bit of everything from every food group; no deep-fried items (is that why the Vietnamese women are so slim?) and also if you need a quick bite. It's more manageable than a sub and very easy to eat on-the-go.

The handburger (weekend evening) Smile Nov 14, 2012

This outlet is very conveniently located if you take public transport. It's located on the same level as the MRT, so you don't even have to go up or down any escalators. Very ideal for those who are impatient and don't want to jostle with the Somerset crowds. I did a takeaway that day, was in and out within 30 minutes.

I went during tea-time, where they were having a promotion for their sliders. What are sliders? Well, sliders are their mini hamburgers. At $3.30 for one, I bought two to try, The Handburger Original Slider and Pulled Pork slider.

The burgers are quite substantial (for mini hamburgers) and the ingredients were generously laid out. The sliders were moist and juicy. I also like the good mix of sauces used.

I like how they packed it very nicely in a box. They even had small containers for their sauces, chilli, tomato sauce, mayonnaise, which they all packed in a very nice transparent, plastic drawstring carrier. Probably not so good for all the hungry commuters who were in the same carriage as me!

I also thought I would write about the service of their staff. Although there were not many customers, I thought the staff were still attentive to the needs of the customers. While I was looking at the menu, a waiter immediately came up to me, and answered all of my questions patiently. I asked quite a lot of questions as I hadn’t made up my mind yet and he was very thorough with the answers he gave. Not once did he display any impatience or the ‘are-you-done’ look, and he managed to maintain a smile throughout the conversation. I was very impressed with this waiter who had a lot of product knowledge and displayed a very high standard of service. The rest were pleasant enough, but it was this guy who exceeded my expectations for a burger place.

Sauce Bar (early evening) Smile Nov 06, 2012

Categories : Singaporean | Bars/Lounges

Visited Sauce Bar in the early evening. In fact, we were one of the first customers who ordered food. Guess for a bar kind of establishment, they don't really expect many customers that early.

We ordered an appetiser, the Ebi Panko (Prawn with Special Mustard Sauce) $12.00, two mains, the Fish and Chips $18.00 and the Fresh River Catch $20.00, which is actually pan-fried salmon.

I liked the sauce that came with the Ebi, it went very nicely with the prawns.

The salmon was OK, slightly underdone, but I really like the Fish and Chips. The Fish came in squares (!), totally not what we were expecting and the fish flakes were a nice touch.

By the way, don't expect air-con here. Like most of the other establishments at the Esplanade area, a lot of them have al-fresco dining concepts and it is the same here. They do have those industrial-type fan mists though.

This was my second visit to Megumi. The first was on a weekend, and the restaurant was bursting to the seams, due to ongoing promotions with different merchants and deal sites. To get to the restaurant, you can take a bus from Clementi MRT station (52, 154, 184) and alight five stops later. Just alight in front of the stop where you can see the huge sign 'Sunset Way'.

On the Thursday evening we were there, the restaurant was about half-filled with reservation stands placed at several tables. The service was more prompt than on the previous weekend. We got a seat in the corner, and ordered the dishes below.

First up was the soft-shell crab, which would have tasted better if it was crispier. I liked the dip that was served with it.

Next came the cod fish ramen, which had a huge serving of noodles. Suitable for sharing between two people, with orders of some side dishes. The soup base was tasty, and I would have liked more of the garnishing. The ramen seemed rather popular, as there were several people who ordered it.

The last dish was the Tempura, which rounded up the meal nicely. It was crispy and went well with the sauce served.

We spent about $42++, without drinks and inclusive of taxes.
