Love face - Bar Chor Mee OK Apr 21, 2011

Categories : Singaporean | Chinese | Coffeeshop | Noodles

As there were 3 of us, we decided to add another dish for lunch and i decided to go with a favourite which i "hoped" will not go wrong - Bak Chor Mee ($3.50).

There was no queue and there was a take-away fee of 20 cents as it uses plastic containers.

I was surprise with the bak chor mee as although it was packet, the noodles was not very soggy or too dry. What was a little on the "down" side was that the minced pork, pork pieces and liver (especially) were all over-cooked. Pork balls on the other hand will never be over cooked.

Noodles were really Q - (springy) and the amount of chili was just nice for me, but for people who love spicy stuff, you should ask for more chili the next time.

On a whole, it a little below normal as there are much better ones out there tongue

60 year old Hokkien Mee? OK Apr 21, 2011

Categories : Food Court | Noodles

Was wondering where to go for lunch when my collegues and I decided to head to this coffee shop nearby for some packet food. The stall's flyer caught our eye, stating that it was famous so we decided to give it a try.

We ordered the Oyster omelette ($5 - smallest) and the Hokkien mee ($4 - smallest) and the wait time for the food was really long.

The oyster omelette was not to our liking as the oyster was small and tasted weird - not really fresh. The eggs were too fried and charred although i do like the packaging of banana leaves for the dish ( but not the hokkien mee??)

The Hokkien noodles were too soggy for my liking. My friend like the soupy taste. The prawns were almost fresh - as it is 2 steps below good. looks good yet a little dissapointing as not very succulent. The chili did not mix well enough with the noodles too. I did not understand why the oyster omelette was in banana leaves but not my hokkien noodles.

To sum up, it was a not a fulfilling experience.

Visited this shop as i was walking around the area for sightseeing and decided to trode into the waterloo center. Was surprised to see a cake shop within such a place. The lady who served us was very friendly. explaining the different cakes and flavours they had, but i choose the carrot cake as it was their signature cake.

According to the lady, we were suppose to have it at room temperature, Upon the first mouth, i was astounded by the wonderful combination of it's cream cheese and it's cake, with the rasins being really fruity and flavourful, yet it was not too sweet. I like the almonds on it's side too as it provided a more nutty experience.

Although i not a great fan of carrot cakes, i would say this cake has a really homely flavour to it. Would be looking forward to try the rest of the flavours like chocolate and red velvet cake sometime soon smile

Hokkien Mee

Hokkien Mee

My fiancee ordered hokkien mee as she had the craving for noodles. It looked much better than my set meal.

The prawns looked fresh and the chili looks fantastic, especially with the large portions of fried lard all over the noodles (free-flow)

Upon the the first mouth - it was a tid disappointing. I was expecting something full of seafood taste as the smell that came from frying was great - but the whole dish was cooked a little too long. Other than the prawns, everything was a little too over.

Presentation wise, it looked good.

Went to the Singapore flyer for some errands and decided to have my lunch there as there were alot of people having food there. Decided on Bak Kut Teh as it has been a long time since i had this and i had a cupon offer with me.

What shocked me was the price of the Dang Ou soup costs $3 per bowl and the normal price of a Bak Kut Teh Set (Soup + rice) will cost $5.80.

With regards to the taste, the Dang Ou vegetables soup is much milder and not so spicy when compared with the Bak Kut Teh soup. The vegetables seems to have been cooked a little too long and the freshness of the vegetables isn't there.

As for the Bak Kut Teh, there were only 2 medium sized pieces of meat and there were still dried blood in it which irked me. I would have prefered if the soup had a stronger pepery taste to it but the taste of the clove of garlic was just nice.

The cut chilies with black sauce did go very well with the meat and it wasn't too overpowering.
