Best shaved ice and yam paste Smile Apr 19, 2013

Categories : Chinese Desserts | Desserts and Cakes

This has been a must-go every time I'm in Chinatown. They serve awesome Asian desserts like yam paste, carrot cake, sesame paste and I could go on. But for the humid weather in Singapore, their hot-seller (pun intended) is their shaved ice! They have a variety of flavors to choose from, and my favourite is still the safe ones like durian, chendol.

Decided to try a new flavour last week while I was there. Green tea with red bean, which is very much Jap influenced. Sadly, not everyone appreciated it because the green tea ice cream was the tad bitter kind which not everybody likes. I love it though, because of the bitter aftertaste. It was also creamy so it was just the right level of sweetness for me. The red beans went perfectly with the green tea flavour! A must-have for fans of green tea!

Good Lunch Stop at USS Smile Apr 19, 2013
Share on TwitterShare on Facebook
Categories : Pasta

Because its fast food- basically serving up slices of ready-made pizzas, the queue moves really fast and its a great place to stop for lunch if you wanna beat the crowd.

We only had 5 people in front of us at 1.30pm. It could be that it was a weekday so the crowd wasn't that intense. Still, it is not overpriced, and they serve a pretty wicked pepperoni pizza. I went for seconds after that, even though it was a huge size. The theme park must have worked up quite an appetite.

There are plenty of food stops all around USS, and its a clever idea not to get something too filling, which made this pizza stop the best lunch stop!

Whenever the lunch crowd gets too crazy, I always turn to the slightly expensive option just to skip the waiting time.

Thai Express is my favourite place for clear tom yum soup, spicy glass noodles and curried soft shell crab. However, they always fail to take note of my special order: Extra curried sauce for their soft shell crab.

I am not a fan of soft shell crab, so I usually just order another dish and steal the sauce from the bf. Their curried sauce is more the Japanese sweet kind, and cooked with egg. Its perfection right in the sauce, and it goes with everything.

If I'm extremely hungry, I always order an extra side of prawn toast. I have attempted making that on my own and am proud to say I have succeeded. So it may seem slightly pricey to pay for it, but its an extremely messy affair. So whenever I have the craving, I would just order that too.

Good food and don't miss out on their avocado shake, its a MUST!

Do try their oysters when they have the deals. The oysters are fresh, and served very quickly. Try to go during off peak timings so that there would not be a crowd.

The main course we ordered was the mahi mahi, which was drenched in a delicious sauce, something buttery. The meat was really tender and cooked just right.

Sadly, this restaurant always looks empty, but their food is actually pretty good. They also serve warm bread with olive oil as part of the starters, and the bread is really soft, unlike those stale ones that have been left there for a long time.

Eggs Benny by the 'harbour'  Smile Apr 19, 2013

Firstly, never go there if you're not driving or cabbing. Its clearly an elitist cafe from its inaccessibility. Nevertheless, it serves up pretty good food, but be ready to pay.

As one can clearly guess, you are paying for the view. It is possibly the most serene views for breakfast, and looking out over all those yachts. Its probably the only place you can get such a view.

This is one of the better eggs benny that I've had, but it is also rather overpriced.

The pancakes were mediocre, even I could do better ones at home. They were dry, and not even warm upon arrival. sad Didn't taste good too. We didn't even finish half of it.

It was a good thing it rained the night before, because the wind was cool and breezy. It was great just sitting there with a cuppa and letting the morning slide away.

One thing that I would return to prive for though, are their desserts. We ordered a chocolate tart and until today, I cannot find one which matches their standards. Whether it is their use of varlhona or some secret ingredient, I still can't put a finger on what made it so yummy.
