Had a really enjoyable dinner at Peperoni Pizzeria last night. Arrived around 6:30 and there were lots of tables, but when we left around 8 it was packed! Here's what we had:
Rucola salad

Rucola salad

Rucola salad: $10
Generously sized and with lots of crisp rocket greens, cherry tomatoes, and shaved parmesan. This was enough to share between 3 people as an appetizer. I really liked the balsamic vinegar dressing which was slightly sour and a nice contrast to all the cheese.
Diavola Pizza

Diavola Pizza

Diavola pizza (pepperoni): $23 for 12"
It certainly isn't a pretty pizza, but it was delicious! You can really taste that they use quality ingredients - even the mozarrella cheese was flavourful and smooth. The crust was thin but soft and chewy. Two thumbs up.

My only complaint would be that if you're charging $5 for a coke/iced tea at a casual restaurant like this it should probably include a refill.

British pub with friendly folks Smile Aug 31, 2012

Categories : English | Bars/Lounges

This bar on River Valley Rd is notable for being the oldest English pub in Singapore. It's a bit out of the way, so most of the customers here are regulars and seem to know each other - a mix of friendly expats. They also have a pub quiz on the last Thursday of the month.

As you'd expect of an English pub, there's a good selection of beers on tap including Tetley's Bitter, London Pride, Guinness and Carlsberg. They also have a wide selection of bottles - I like the pear cider.

British food isn't known for being great, but it's fine for bar snacks - potato wedges, chicken wings, things like that.

There's a nice garden area in the back where you can smoke. The servers are friendly, too.

Not worth it Cry Aug 30, 2012

Came here for drinks after work. Sure, the setting is meant to feel very exclusive, but $15 just to sit down at 8pm is absurd. The reviews I read on websites said this included snacks like edamame and parma ham, but we didn't see any of this. The only snacks provided were some soggy potato chips.

I have low expectations of Singapore service, but it was especially terrible here. Ordered a pint of Sapporo beer (which was not cheap), and the waiter brought a half-filled glass. When I asked where the rest of the beer was, he took it away and then returned with the exact same thing. What the hell?!

Starbucks discount for students Smile Aug 30, 2012

Categories : American | Coffee

This Starbucks outlet at U Town is said to be the largest Starbucks in Singapore. It's huge so I definitely believe it! It gets quite crowded during the day with people studying, but if you come during the weekend or school holidays it's quite relaxing.

For my breakfast I ordered an Americano coffee and a lemon blueberry scone. The staff warmed up the scone, and it was very good with the slightly tart scone sweetened up from the icing. Yum. The coffee is always good too.

The staff are young and friendly, and the best part is that this Starbucks offers a 10% discount for students.

This Starbucks is right in the lobby of the Fusionopolis building. It gets crowded in the afternoon with students from the nearby schools studying, but it's better now that they've added more tables.

I find the staff here to be friendlier than your average Starbucks. Or maybe it's just because I'm a regular. Anyway, I usually order an Americano which is $4.50. I paid using my Starbucks card and the staff asked if I wanted a free slice of cake since it was my birthday month. So nice of them to remind me, otherwise I would have forgotten. I chose the chocolate lava cake - it was really moist and sweet. Yum!
