Oily chicken wings  OK Aug 30, 2012
Categories : Hawker Centre | BBQ

Pasir Panjang FC is my nearest hawker center, so I think I've tried every stall here. I do like chicken wings, but these definitely were not my favourite. I found them really, really oily. I went through a whole packet of tissues eating these! Maybe it's the sauce they marinate them with? I did like the chili sauce though.

PS - the rojak from the stall around the corner is better shocked

Not as good as I remember OK Aug 29, 2012

Categories : Korean | Buffet | Korean BBQ

Had a friend from Europe passing through Singapore, so took him out for Korean BBQ which is always a fun, social meal. I had a birthday dinner at Ju Shin Jung last year and loved it, plus I live nearby, so decided to go there.

Arrived a bit after 8pm on a Tuesday night and were quickly seated. Lots of people in the restaurant which is always a good sign! Service is very attentive and we chose a few meats to have grilled - the bulgogi beef ($50) and marinated chicken ($22).
So many side dishes!

So many side dishes!

Out came all the side dishes - tofu, pumpkin custard, different kinds of kimchi, anchovies, soup, etc. There's so many of them... but I honestly didn't care for the taste of most of them. The soup was very sour, the pumpkin custard was very sweet for an appetizer, and the fried dumpling things were cold and soggy. I remember them being a lot better the first time I ate here sad

The meat of course was very good. The bulgogi beef is lean but well marinated, and so yummy wrapped up in lettuce with some chili sauce. The staff cook it for you and cut it up, so you can enjoy your drinks and chat.

Tuesday night is apparently 50% off all drinks, so our jug of Tiger Beer was a bargain $13. They also provide water and cold tea free of charge.

I still liked it (and service is very good), but it just wasn't as good as I remember.

Try the "specials"  Smile Aug 26, 2012

Categories : Thai | Food Court

I tend to be a bit of a Thai food snob (I lived in Thailand before moving to Singapore), but am always happy with the food at this stall in the Fusionopolis basement foodcourt.

It's run by real Thais and the food is reasonably authentic - especially the "specials" which are printed on white boards. Try the roasted pork with Thai basil or the fish -- really delicious for $5.50.

I also find their green curry to be quite good - not too sweet - and always order a plate of som tam (spicy papaya salad).

Yummy falafel!  Smile Aug 26, 2012
Categories : Middle Eastern/Mediterranean | Burgers and Sandwiches | Salads/ Acai Bowl

I was hungry after an afternoon at the ArtScience Museum, and Pita Pan was right across from the museum's exit. The other diners' food looked good and the prices were right, so decided to give it a try.

Falafel seemed to be their specialty, so I went with the classic falafel balls with pita bread. It cost about $10, and the staff gave me a number to take to my table so they could bring it out when it was ready.

The falafel arrived fresh from the fryer and was hot and crispy. The pita bread was soft and chewy, and together the combination was absolutely delicious. Definitely one of the best value falafel meals in Singapore.

My only criticism is that I wish the sauce accompanying the falafel was a bit thicker and more flavorful - it seemed a tad watery. I'll definitely be back to try more!

Good for a foodcourt Smile Aug 24, 2012

Categories : Food Court | Chinese Soup

Whenever I'm at Anchorpoint or Ikea this is where I come to eat - the Thai food is above average for a foodcourt. This is what we ordered last night:
Papaya salad and Tom Kha Gai soup

Papaya salad and Tom Kha Gai soup

Papaya salad ($4): So yummy and so healthy! This salad has lots of garlic, chili and crushed peanuts. A must-try.

Tom kha gai soup with rice ($5.50): An alternative to the usual tom yam goong, this soup has chicken, mushrooms, and coconut milk. The bowl I had last night was under-seasoned, but it's usually pretty good.
Basil chicken

Basil chicken

Thai basil chicken ($5): This is such a classic Thai dish and came with a sunny-side up egg and rice. The taste was extremely sweet and extremely salty, I think they use a lot of MSG in it. This is the only dish I wouldn't order again.
