cheap & filling lunch Smile Jul 11, 2012

This stall has an assortment of pre-cooked Malay dishes. I'm not sure what everything is to tend to order the same dishes over and over again -- beef rendang, tempe, spicy bean sprouts, potato puffs.

The beef rendang is my favorite - it's really yummy and filling. Plus it's only $3 for 1 meat, 1 veg and rice. Nothing is very spicy though, so remember to get a scoop of sambal on the side.

Fresh food in a garden setting Smile Jul 11, 2012

If you're out exploring the Kranji farms area, the Poison Ivy Bistro is the best (and only?) place to stop for lunch.

A lot of the produce grown at Bollywood Veggies farm is used in the food, so it's really fresh and flavourful.

I ordered the rojak flower chicken... it had an interesting variety of textures, but wasn't spicy like they warned me... in fact it was a bit bland. I found there to be a lot of bones in the chicken and it was served luke-warm (maybe it's supposed to be like that?). The banana curry my boyfriend ordered was delicious -- I think I ate most of it smile Who knew that bananas were so good with curry?! The nasi lemak and mushroom chicken also got thumbs-up from my dining companions, although I didn't try any.

We rounded off the meal with coffee and their 3-in-1 dessert. The cakes were definitely the highlight of the meal! The banana cake was so yummy that we bought one to take home.

I also really liked the setting... it's casual and homey with really kind staff. You can sit indoors where it's air-conditioned or outside where there's a kids play area. You can also take your dog here and sit outside.

Prices are very reasonable considering the organic ingredients used. I'd be back more often if it wasn't so hard to get here!

Not worth the hype OK Jul 06, 2012

I'd heard of Allauddin's famous briyani and noticed it always had a queue, so when I found myself at Tekka around 11:30am before the lunch crowd arrived I figured this was my chance to try it.

There were only 4 people ahead of me in queue and they were processing the orders really quickly - it's already cooked, so they really just need to scoop it onto the plate. I ordered the mutton briyani since Indian food is really time I ever like mutton . It was the same price for chicken or mutton - $4.50.

I got a generous serving of rice, a piece of mutton, and a bowl of curry sauce with a chunk of potato. I really didn't think the taste was anything special. In fact, it was quite bland for Indian food. Also, the mutton piece I got was mostly bone - yuck.

In my opinion, Allaudin's isn't any better than a random briyani shop at Tekka. It wasn't bad, but I'd rather try my luck at a different stall.

As another reviewer said, negative points for their use of disposable plates, bowls and cutlery - it's so bad for the environment!! sad

Good & affordable Japanese Smile Jul 04, 2012

Categories : Japanese

I have this arbitrary goal of trying every Japanese restaurnant in Liang Court, so last night for quick dinner I went to Yayoiken. It was about 7pm and we immediately got a table. The service was excellent and the staff even warned me that the iced green tea didn't have free refills when I ordered it (it's only $1, so it's ok!).

I was really craving cold udon, and the only place on the menu I could find it was in a set, so I ordered the Oyako don + Zaru Udon. It came quickly and the presentation was really good. The oyako don (chicken, egg, rice) was okay but not great... it was maybe a little undercooked and the egg made everything else wet. It was bland too, even after I added soy sauce. But I absolutely loved the cold Udon! I slurped all the thick, smooth noodles up. Yum!

My boyfriend had a set with stir-fried pork, rice, miso soup, and a side salad that was even cheaper than my set. His was $9.90 and mine was $12.90. With drinks and tax/service, the bill was still under $30 making this a really great value. I'll definitely be back to try something else!

Yummy mango sago Smile Jun 22, 2012
Categories : Fusion | Chinese Desserts | Desserts and Cakes

My friend brought me here for dessert on one scorching hot afternoon. I don't know anything at all about Chinese desserts, so she suggested I try the mango sago. I love mango, so why not? smile

I wasn't quite sure what to expect, but was happy when I saw a bowl of snow ice, mango puree and some of those jelly tadpole things. It's sweet and refreshing - the perfect dessert for a hot day and a bargain at $2.80.

And they use 100% real mango in their dessert, not just mango flavoring. It really makes a big difference.
