I was giving a friend from Canada an introduction to hawker centre food, so ordered both the popiah and carrot cake from this stall. The popiah cost $1.50 each and were a generous size. The skin was a bit bland, but inside had lots of different textures like mushy turnip and crispy bean sprouts. The dash of chili makes it even better. They also put hard-boiled egg in their popiah. I ordered 2 and it was enough for 5 people to each get a few pieces.

The fried carrot cake was really good and they put 2 big prawns in it - the first time I've ever seen that! I ordered the $4 size and it was a bit smaller than average, but the prawns made up for it. The hawkers were friendly and made it nice and spicy for us - every little piece got eaten up!

As a North American living in Singapore I have to admit I was pretty happy when Applebee's came to Singapore - finally a place for good chicken fingers, riblets and Tex-mex food! So I went within the first couple weeks of opening and was quite disappointed - they did not offer my favorite North American Applebee's menu items, the food we did over was disappointing, and it was over-priced.

Well, I was walking past Applebee's today on the way to Fair Price Finest and noticed their new lunch sets -- a half dozen classic choices with a soft drink for $8.80 NET. I was hungry and when I saw that I could get Caesar Salad with Steak for just $8.80, I decided to try it. I arrived around 11:45 ahead of the lunch crowd, and my meal arrived in less than 10 minutes. It was the perfect portion for lunch with lots of salad and shredded parmesan cheese and medium-well done steak. The steak wasn't particularly hot, but that might have been intentional since it's on the salad and you don't want it to cook the lettuce! It was quite good and I'd definitely order it again. I would like if it came with garlic bread, too! (and would be willing to pay me)

For $8.80 including an iced tea, this is an amazing deal and I'll probably give Applebee's another try for lunch -- they do have chicken fingers now!

I had family visiting from North America... I wanted to give them the full hawker centre experience, they wanted to eat seafood - so we ended up at Newton Food Centre.

First off, it's worth saying that the touting is even worse than I remembered. As soon as we crossed the pedestrian bridge from Newton MRT there were touts trying to direct us to certain tables and to order from certain stalls! Also, during the meal, a guy selling fake gold watches kept approaching us!

Anyway, I refused to order chili crab from one of the touts, so walked around until I found a stall where it looked like locals were ordering from and wasn't harassing tourists. That led me to stall #46 operated by Edward. I ordered a chili crab, fried squid, and, of course, man tou! The price for the crab was $4.50 per 100 grams. I honestly never eat crab so don't know if this is too expensive? I know it's cheaper than No Signboard Seafood at least.

Anyway, Edward was really friendly and brought all the food over to us when it was ready. He also gave us tons of tissue - chili crab is always a messy meal!

The chili crab was a big hit. It was partially cracked so it was easier to eat, and the sauce was really good mopped up with the man tou. Yum yum! The squid on the other hand weren't as popular. I liked the spicy sauce, but found them to be kind of rubbery. I rarely like squid though, so don't take my critique too seriously! I think it was $12 for a medium portion.

I don't think I'll be going back to Newton any time soon, but if I did I wouldn't hesitate to recommend this stall for BBQ seafood. It's one of the few honest spots at Newton.

Hooray for McCafe at The Forum - one of the few places on Orchard Road where you can sip a frappuccino outside without paying a small fortune!I ordered the double chocolate frappuccino and I think it was $4.90. They didn't ask if I wanted whipped cream (I would have said no), but it's yummy with it too.

The taste is great and the price is right - a couple dollars less than a frappucino at the Starbucks that is practically next door by Orchard Parade Hotel.

There are both indoor and outdoor tables here - just be prepared to deal with LOTS OF PIGEONS if you sit at the outside tables. Apparently birds love french fries too!

I'm a big fan of the Korean stall at Food Republic food court on the 3rd level of Vivocity.

The prices are high for a food court, but the quality of the food is excellent. In fact, it's better than many Korean restaurants that I've tried in Singapore. For S$7.50 I ordered the hot stone mixed rice. It comes with your choice of meats, and I opted for chicken. They were also having a promotion on the hot stone with black pepper beef for S$6.80, but I prefer the classic.

It takes at least 5 minutes for them to prepare this dish, but it's worth the wait. You get a large portion of rice, veggies, meat and a fried egg on top. Add some of their Korean chili pepper sauce, mix it all together, and it's absolutely delicious! It's quite spicy if you add the whole portion of chili, so be warned! Thankfully it comes with a bowl of salty soup broth.

My only complaint about this stall is that the portion of kimchi they give you is really measly! If you're ordering the more expensive sets, a more generous portion of kimchi would be fair.
