Paul Cry Jun 22, 2012

There has been so much rave about Paul Bakery few months back, and the queues were ridiculously long on weekends. Which kind of puts me off especially when you just want to rest your tired legs and cool down from the sweltering heat. So with the recent die down in the crazy crowds outside Paul, I decided to give it a shot.

I ordered the Mix Fruit Tart (S$7) which was so-so at best. In fact, I prefer the ones at Delifrance. The pastry of the tart was overly crumbly and tasted quite rough and tasteless.

I love french crepes and being a famous French Bakery, I thought I should try the crepes here at Paul. Sadly, the crepes fell short of expectation. It was soggy, and I wasn't even sure if they were freshly made as it wasn't hot or even warm. The chocolate sauce tasted like what i could get out of a hershey bottle. Nothing fantastic to make me wanna go back for more. On top of that, the overly priced crepe made me feel that it's really not worth my while.

I probably won't be back so soon. Especially not when I have to pay so much for something not so satisfying.

awfully chocolate OK Aug 04, 2012

Awfully chocolate started off as a small plain white empty store selling take away chocolatey fudgy cakes coming in only three flavours-plain, rum and raisin and chocolate banana, and they have now expanded its wings into cafes, and sister restaurants, offering a wider variants of chocolatey desserts and other sweets. We decided to pop by Awfully chocolate along joo chiat one rainy afternoon, hoping some rich and thick chocolate would chase away the weekday blues. The white-washed cafe is a 3-in-1 concept: awfully chocolate, mooshi bakes and mooshi bistro, which means we could order different desserts from 3 different (one in the same actually) cafes, whatever the case is, it was good news for us!!

We had Hei ice cream which was extremely sinful but I do not regret at all, because it was overwhelming with chocolate, real chocolate!! Accompanied with moist and warm super stacked chocolate cake is best suited for die-hard chocoholics!!! The extremely soft chocolate cake melts in your mouth and its smooth velvety texture leaves you craving for more. Guaranteed to chase away any blues of any sort.

We also had the banana cream pie which caught me by surprise with its fragrant banana caramel and amazing blend of flavours and texture. It was dry nor soggy nor overly sweet. The custard wasn't too sweet, hence the sweetness came from the caramel and banana, giving the pie a nice balance to it. Definitely worth the try.

The pear Fragipane Tart was also good, not my top choice though. Especially not when it lack in frangipani essence or flavours. It seemed more like a normal pear tart to me. (Wasn't really a tart to me, the base was more of a cake.) Not something I would go back for.

XLB OK Jul 26, 2012

Though Din Tai Fung has been around for awhile but there is somehow always a queue during the peak periods and weekends. I guess you can never go too wrong with Din Tai Fung as the menu is pretty standard with the occasional feature dishes such as chocolate Xiao Long Bao or Red Bean rice dumplings, which i find are pretty good and do add an interesting twist to the usual flavours. The food quality here is rather consistent and prices are reasonable which perhaps explains the perpetual queue.

One of my favourites here is the Shrimp Fried Rice (S$10). The rice has a nice "q q" bite to it with generous servings of fresh prawns and golden egg. Nothing extraordinary, but it is a satisfying dish.

The precise 18 fold xiao long bao (S$10.80 for 10) is meaty and soupy on the inside, do be cautious when popping the whole XLB into your mouth! The XLB skin is thin and light which soaks up the the flavour of the pork soup encased in it.

After being overwhelmed by the pork fat, we were curious to try the vegetable dumpling. I find it rather bland and boring. Perhaps it's something you might want to give a miss.

Another dish worth trying is the spring roll. The crispy skin was surprisingly not oily and the salty sweet fillings in the "spring roll" added a nice crunch to it.

swirls OK Jul 11, 2012

Singapore seems have bouts of fad food fever, and I think the cupcake crave has been getting on quite well recently. There has been numerous designer and boutique cupcake shops spouting out at nooks and corners. After brunch one Saturday afternoon, we happen to pass by this little cupcake shop along robertson quay and decided to give it a try. Since they had both mini and regular sized cupcakes, I think it wouldn't be too difficult to stomach one or two after such a heavy brunch. Personally I like mini cupcakes, because it's less filling and we get to try more flavours.

The array of colourful display is really attractive, making you feel like a kid in a candy store. As I was very full from a big breakfast, I decided to go with the mini red velvet (regular S$3.95). The chocolate flavour came out quite nicely and blended with the not overly sweet cream cheese frostings. However I did find the cupcake a tad dry. Which I'm not sure if it's because of the mini size, perhaps mini cupcakes are usually drier in texture as the regular ones.

The taste was alright. Nothing much to rave about. But perhaps i could give Swirls another shot and have the regular ones instead!!

all day breakfast OK Jun 25, 2012

Wild Honey is one of the pioneers kickstarting a trend of all day breakfast here in our Sunny Island of Singapore! Breakfast is one of my most anticipated meals of the day, a good and hearty breakfast really sets the mood for the entire day. And I consider having a late, lazy breakfast on a weekend a luxury, with no rush to get up before 11am and scramble for the fragrant aroma of pancakes. Hence, the first place that popped into my mind one late Saturday afternoon, was to head down to the new Wild Honey at Scotts Square.

I love the cosy and homely ambience of Wild Honey and the spacious setting of the Scotts Square outlet as compared to the Mandarin Gallery one. Unlike the one at Mandarin Gallery, you don't have to place your orders at the counter, just sit back, relax, and the servers will take your orders, and enjoy.

Perhaps we came at an 'unbreakfastly' hour, the wait wasn't as bad as most people commented. It wasn't as fast, but like i said, it's supposed to be a lazy Saturday afternoon, so it was pretty nice chilling with the epicure magazines you could grab from the racks.

Finally, my Canadian Breakfast (S$18++) greeted me huge portion of a 3 stack warm pancakes, with maple syrup, a wild berry and hibiscus compote and bacon by the side. The thick pancakes were mighty filling and dense! As i have a soft spot for pancakes, my expectations are rather picky. I would say that these are relatively good, but not the best. And perhaps a tad pricey. I wasn't a huge fan of the bacons either.

I also ordered a side of Mushrooms (S$6) which was nicely sauteed in butter and really absorbed the buttery flavour. A mixture of button mushroom, shitake and other varieties gave the side dish a nice robust flavour to it. The portion of the mushroom was just nice for a side dish.

I also had a cuppa cappuccino (S$7). You usual cuppa coffee to balance off the sweetness of the maple syrup.

All in all, Wild Honey offers a luxurious breakfast with a price tag. But with its humongous portions, I would say it's nice to treat yourself to some Wild Honey every once in awhile.
