What I like about Sun with Moon is the modern decor, reasonable price, decent japanese food, value for money set lunches, what more can you ask for? But do bear in mind and try to make a reservation during the peak hours, as getting a table can be quite a hassle. I've had a number of meals here and not been disappointed; I feel that the quality in relation to the price of the food, I'm pretty much satisfied with what Sun with Moon has to offer.

We had the California crunch roll which I felt as pretty good, as it had a good bite to it on the inside, and the crackling burst of flying fish roe gave the usual california maki a nice twist. The avacado roll was pretty good as well, however i do prefer the former. The rolls here come in 4 pieces of 8 pieces, giving theirs customers a choice to have more variety especially when eating in smaller groups.

The chirashi don came with a rainbow of raw sliced sashimi, though most of it was salmon sashimi. But what I like about it is the mixture of sashimi and glazed salmon, hence adding another layer of flavours to the usual chirashi don.

The service here is pretty decent, however don't expect tip top service during the weekends or peak hours, as they seem shorthanded at times, hence unable to attend to the tables promptly. However, food is always served promptly when i make a trip down here despite peak hours or not, lunch or dinner. All in all, it's a place worth dropping by if you are craving for a simple japanese fare somewhere in town.

group therapy Smile Jul 17, 2012

I have always enjoyed weekend brunches with a group of good friends, sharing unpretentious food in a relaxed setting, laughing and talking all afternoon. I wanted my first post to be memorable and nothing is more meaningful than having a good food with great company. We decided to try out Group Therapy-A cosy little cafe nestled on the upper rows of shophouses along Duxton Road. We were greeted by a some very friendly and laid-back ladies who really harmonized with the atmosphere, making it a perfect weekend brunch hideout.

S. and I decided to go with the Ravioli Roasted Wild Mushroom In Black Squid Ink Pasta with Tomato Basil Sauce and Truffle Oil ($20). It was refreshing and light, and roasted mushrooms and tomatoes came through as a simple home-cooked dish that had layers of vibrant flavours to it.

I realized T.S. has a thing for scrambled eggs, and so he had the Eggs Done The Way You Like It Served with a Toasted Bagel ($11), scrambled of course. The eggs were light and fluffy, but it was probably not salty enough for him, as he seemed to be adding dashes to it. It was basically a what you see is what you get brekkie. Straightforward.

T. had the famous Grilled smoked Ham Mushroom and Mozzarella Cheese Panini ($14). This classic sandwich won T's heart as its so simple but so satisfying. My apologies on the rather blurred pictures of the sandwich, thus leaving them out. But this sandwich is definitely not to be missed!

ZY had the Beef Shank Stew with Carrots and Potatoes served with Bread ($15). It was a very hearty stew that was well-cooked and has definitely been stewing for sometime as the beef shanks had a nice robust flavour to it and the veggies in there soaked up the beef essence. This beef stew is something I would like to have on a cold rainy day, when I'm all comfy in my pyjamas, accompanying me while i watch a good ole' movie.

A weekend brunch won't ever be complete without its sweets. We all tucked into Granny Smith's Apple Crumble ($10.50). The apples were nice ad tart, and the crumble was just sweet enough not to overshadow the slightly sour granny smiths. It was served chilled and was a nice ending to happy brunch for a happy bunch

open door policy Smile Jul 04, 2012

The rustic bistro was warmly lit by a lot of natural lighting filtering through the glass ceilings, and we scored a nice spot right at the under the glass roof. Surprisingly, we didn't get a turn a tone darker by the end of brunch (the paradox of wanting to sit under the sunny area without getting the effects of it).
The menu here is rather straightforward and concise, making decisions less of a hassle.

I decided on the smoked salmon and scramble eggs on a toasted ciabatta with spinach and fresh herbs (S$19++). I'm a huge fan of salmon and the last time I had a good smoked salmon breakfast was eons ago at Artichoke. The portions were really hearty and earthy, as compared to most of the breakfast places which aim for the dainty English breakfast that come in "princess portions". Or perhaps I'm just too much of a hearty eater, especially when it comes to weekend brunch. The smoked salmon was alright but the star of the dish was the fluffy scrambled eggs. The creaminess of the eggs complemented the saltiness of the smoked salmon and the robust flavours were gently toned down by simplicity of the toasted ciabatta. Towards the end, bitterness of the arugula rocket gave a roundness to this ensemble, giving it a complete and rustic flavour.

The Poached Asparagus with Scrambled Eggs, rocket and fresh tarragon on a toasted brioche (S$18++) stayed true to its rustic theme as it was served on a wooden chopping board. The eggs were lightly infused with truffle oil and olive oil. The brioche was amazing for this one, adding a buttery aroma to each bite.

Brunch isn't complete without the sweets. I had to order an extra portion of ODP pancakes with strawberries and cream (S$16++). I love strawberries anything. Strawberry shortcake. Strawberries and cream in pancakes or crepes. Strawberry lip balm. Strawberry........
I love the vibrant colour of starwberries and the blend of sweet and sourness to it,, especially when it's paired with whipped cream and fluffy hot pancakes!!

Open Door Policy is definitely one of my "to go" places for brunch. Don't expect a quiet and dainty weekend brunch, but a vibrant and homely morning. Do remember to book in advance cos' ODP sure is a hot spot among weekend brunch goers.

the bald man Smile Jun 29, 2012

Categories : American | Café | Desserts and Cakes

This particular bald man has been on my temptation menu for the longest time. I seem to have a soft spot for him whenever i get a brief whiff of the aroma of pure chocolate and sweet treats. Each time i walk past a MAx Brenner's shop it feels like someone is dangling your favourite food right in front of you luring you in closer and closer. Kinda like hypnotherapy if you would ask me.

Recently, i decided to succumb to my temptation and be overwhelmed by the sweet endings installed for me. Flipping through the chocolatey menu, i decided to try something different instead of the usual chocolate lava cake or chocolate drizzle waffles. Hence i decided to go for the granny smith with toffee walnut waffles drizzled with caramel sauce. Haha, it was my little way of comforting myself at least im having some fruit and nut in my diet.

The waffles were moist and dense, it wasn't the crunchy or crispy kind of waffles you get at Gelare, it has basically alot of bite to it. The tartness of the granny smiths went really well with the crumble and caramel sauce, as it evens out the sweetness of it, thus giving a nice blend of sweet and sourness to the whole ensemble. The vanilla ice-cream was nothing special, but with it, the waffles won't seem complete. All in all it was a refreshing yet filling dessert, do share if you aren't a very big eater or just had a heavy dinner.

Drips Smile Jun 19, 2012

We decided to pop by Drips at tiong bahru for desserts after our pre-father's day dinner. A couple of friends have been raving over their tarts, but being the usual greedy family we are, we tried almost all that's left that evening.

We had the Caramelised Pear Tart which we felt was pretty good. The caramelised pears added a nice sweetness to the custard filling and the tart.

Next up was the lemon tart which i felt wasn't fantastic. Decent but nothing to rave about. Perhaps the lemon curd didn't seem to sit very well with the buttery base somehow.

Another interesting dessert we had was the gula malaka avacado chocolate cake. We liked how the avacado cream added a pretty unique flavour to the cake. And the flavours blended pretty well. Best part was the base of the cake was a crunchy chocolate bottom which was my favourite part of the cake

Last item for the evening was the Creme Brulee . It was creamy and had a strong vanilla flavour to it.

Drips is a nice cosy chill out place in general and I would love to drop by some day and try more of their fruit tarts
