$10 Duck Set Meals Smile Oct 24, 2012
Categories : Chinese | Restaurant | Seafood | Roasted Meat

Once again Changi Airport is having their $10 set meals for week day lunch from 12-2.30pm.

We decided to go to our favorite duck restaurant as we have not been there for a long time as it was closed for renovation.

The decor has not changed with a Mongalian theme with lanterns, carpets decorated on the wall. it also has a tent like Ger design at their round tables.

For the $10 meal, you get a choice of appertizer of boiled cabbage or shredded vegetables. The main course is either seafood fried rice or herbal duck. It comes with a bowl of steam rice. You also get a glass of hot Chinese Tea.

Since there was 2 of us we order one of each appertizer. The plain boiled cabbage was a healthy version with not much taste. The shredded cucumber, carrots were finely shredded and I think it is some cold dish, but it was not icy cold.

We both had their Herbal Duck which is double the amount you will get in a hawker center. We always like their duck as it comes infused with the herb Angelica and has a sweet slight bitter taste gravy which I love to spoon into my rice.

My portion of duck was slight under cooked as I found some pieces of duck hard to tear the meat from the bone.
The rest of the duck meat was tasty with the infused herb taste.

The average cost after tax and towel comes to $12 per head. Good time to try their duck if you have not tried this Restaurant.

Nonya Cafe OK Oct 24, 2012
Categories : Peranakan / Nonya

This is the new Nonya Cafe that is open after Tampines Mall Basement is renovated.
It has a open concept where shoppers can looked into the cafe. It basically sells Nonya dishes in set meal of less than $10.

We decided to try the different sets which comes in 1 glass of barley.
Bakwan Kepeting Goreng $3

Bakwan Kepeting Goreng $3

We ordered the Bakwan Kepeting Goreng which is basically 2 small pieces of fried meat balls & some lettuce. The taste was nothing special and I thought at $3 it was rather expensive for it size
Lok Bak Set $6.90

Lok Bak Set $6.90

The Lok Bak Set is basically steam rice with a portion of braised soy sauce pork and hard boiled egg. The taste was just normal. It is not like the fried Lok Bak which Penang is famous. It came with stored bought Acar and some green vegetables.
Assam Sambal Fish Rice

Assam Sambal Fish Rice

The Assam Sambal Fish Rice Set is the best of the sets that we ordered as it has a nice tangy taste and come with lady finger and egg plant. The gravy make you want to eat more steam rice. It also comes with a bowl of plain soup.
Ayam Buah Keluak Rice Set $7.90

Ayam Buah Keluak Rice Set $7.90

As a fan of Ayam Buah Keluak, this was disappointing as it taste like normal curry and it was not very spicy. You get the same sides as Loh Bak Set

Overall the food its ok and price affordable but do not go expecting high quality Nonya Food.

Soy Sauce Chicken Rice Set OK Oct 24, 2012
Share on TwitterShare on Facebook
Categories : Food Court

I was craving for good Soy Sauce Chicken when I came cross this stall at Marina Bay Sand selling at $8 a set. It came with a portion of the soy sauce chicken, 1/2 braised hard boiled egg, 2 slice of bean curd, some pickled vegetables and a bowl of soup.

The chicken meat was tender and the skin was nicely brown but did not taste like the famous Cross Street Soy Sauce Chicken. The gravy that was pour over it was thicker but not the nice soy sauce that I come to know of this dish.

You have a option of yam rice or white rice. I opt for the yam rice which was nicely cooked and not soggy. It has a dark brown color with yam.

Overall the food is ok but I expected better standard as I was told this food court consist of the hand picked stalls. Prices is expensive in this food court due to the location of MBS.

Hidden Coffee Museum OK Oct 22, 2012
Categories : Coffeeshop

Happened to walk past this coffee shop near chinatown and decided to stop by for a drink. I ordered the Ice Blended Lime Juice with Plum. It was very refreshing with a balance of sour and salty taste. It was icy cold.

We did not try the local food which consist of dark Bak Kut Teh, Sooh Kueh etc as we just had lunch.

As we were seated right at the back, we discovered there is a collections of old coffee related memorabilia which makes up the hidden from view Coffee Museum. It is very tiny and located near the toilet. You see some coffee filter bags,Coffee bean roaster, milk tin to hold takeaway coffee etc. May be interesting information for kids who has not seen them as they grew up in the Starback era.

The ambience is nothing fancy with small wooden table and chair that look like the place was very cheaply put together. The colour theme is red and black. Menu consist of laminated pages string together.

Tasty & Cheap Mee Rebus Smile Oct 22, 2012
Share on TwitterShare on Facebook
Categories : Singaporean | Hawker Centre

This is one of the cheapest and best tasting Mee Rebus to my family. It is located in the East between Tanah Merah MRT and Bedok MRT. It been around for more than 20 years. There is always a long queue, and the queue stretch to the opposite stall. The wait is worth it.
Mee Rebus $1.50

Mee Rebus $1.50

You can get your Mee Rebus fix without hard boiled egg for $1.20. We normally ordered the $1.50 version so that we can try other yummy food in the hawker center. For $1.50, you get 1 whole hard boiled egg, a lime, smaller portion of yellow noodles and bean sprout with sprinkle of fried shallots, chopped green chilli and tofu. The Hokkien noodle is coated with a lighter gravy. This addicting tasty gravy is made with small dried shrimps. You can topped some dark soya sauce if you prefer. If you cannot have enough of it order the biggest portion which cost only $2.

It is really rare in Singapore to have a $2 meal but you have it for as little as $1.20. Highly recommended ! The stall is located in the hawker stalls which has other yummy food and other good food in the nearby coffeeshops.
