Hidden Eurasian Gem Smile Oct 21, 2011

Categories : European | Fusion | Café

This is a hidden cafe serving Eurasian food. It is located in the Kun Yan Methodist Church. It is 1 min walk from the exit A of Bras Basah MRT & very convenient.

The cafe is bright and air-con simply decorated with simple table and chair. Corner of the entrance had a sofa sitting and in the middle it has a long bar top dinning table.

The owner Mary Gomez serves Eurasian Food such as Chicken Debal, Feng, Eurasian Curry Puff, Salted Fish Achar and Vegetable Achar. Her value for money daily set lunch is $7 which is a choice of main dish and a drink of either lime juice, lce lemon tea, hot tea or coffee and desert for the day.

Fry Vegetables,Chicken Debal & Pepper Pork Belly

Depending of the day of the week, she has 1 fixed main course served with rice depending on the day of the week. For example, Wed is Chicken Curry Debal and Thurs is chicken Buah Keluak. The other main course for the day is not fixed. On the day we were there we had Chicken Curry Debal and Pepper Pork Bell similar to Soya Sauce Pork. Check it out on http://www.marykafe.info/Marys_Kafe/Menu.html

The Chicken Curry Debal taste is similar to what my aunty used to cooked, but we called it the Curry chicken Devil as it can be really spicy hot. For these dishes, she put in pieces of sausage beside the chicken and potato. The gravy is a light spicy curry with no coconut milk. This dish is normally served during X'mas period using the leftover of turkey, roast pork which are added to the curry chicken. Mary version is tasty but a little oily, I would prefer to remove the chicken skin so that it is healthier.

The Pepper Pork Belly is similar to Soya Sauce Pork but the pork belly is cut into big chunk & cooked with soy sauce & lots of pepper. I love the yummy gravy to go with rice but due to using Pork belly it is too oily for me.

We also ordered a plate of Kueh Pie Ti for $3. The shell of the Kueh Pie Ti was commercial made & filling was quite good.
Sugee Cake

Sugee Cake

The Sugee is very good and has a nice buttery and graining texture. Highly recommend at $12 a loaf of cake. If you like it with icing and marzipan, you will have to order the whole cake in advance starting from $42 for about 1.4kg.
Pineapple Tart 40cents each

Pineapple Tart 40cents each

Highly recommended Pineapple Tart has a buttery melt in the mouth pastry and generous pineapple jam with the right sweetness level.

Heavenly Macarons and Cupcake. Smile Oct 13, 2011
Share on TwitterShare on Facebook
Categories : Bakery

I ordered a box of 5 macarons for $11 and 2 cupcakes at $3.50 each when I happened to be at Holland Grove.
Macaroons

Macaroons

The macarons were packed in a nice box which fits 5 pieces nicely. I picked the black sesame, Lemon, Yuzu, Raspberry and Black Forest. The shell of the macarons has a chewy texture and the sweetness level is just right. The filling is filled with yummy smooth cream depending on the flavour you order.
Cupcakes

Cupcakes

The cupcake comes in chocolate or vanilla base with different cream topping. I ordered the black forest cup cake which has a pink cream and topped with strong liqueur cherry. The other cupcake is a vanilla based with yuzu flavour. I like the soft and fluffy cake texture and the not overpowering sweet cream.

Highly recommended treat if you are in Holland Grove area. It is one of the best macarons that I have eaten locally.

Recommended Dish(es):  Macaroon, cupcake

1 Pint of Takeaway Pack $13.50

1 Pint of Takeaway Pack $13.50

Baskin Robbins is finally backed in Singapore after a long absence. Their ice cream is generally sweeter than other similar branded ice cream.

I miss their Pralines n Cream flavour. They now have a healthy version which is vanilla yogurt based instead of vanilla ice cream with praline pecan, chocolate cookies and caramel. This is called Perils of Praline .

Blueberry cheesecake is cheesecake ice cream with blueberry ribbon.

I ordered 1 pint to takeaway which include the above 2 flavours. Did not realise the blueberry cheesecake has a yogurt version until the guy packed the ice cream into the container.

The yogurt version of Pralines n Cream is as yummy and creamy. The blueberry ice cream has pieces of cheesecake and blueberry jam, but it is not too sweet.

They even do Ice Cream Cake and you can pick your favourite ice cream flavours.

Menu

Menu

This is the new cafe at T2 of Changi Airport outside the Arrival Hall. It has taken over the place that was formally occupied by Polar Cafe.
Menu

Menu

Chinta Manis means “Sweet Love" in Malay. It serves Peranakan food, kuehs, sweet and savoury pastries.
Decor

Decor

The place is decorated with simple marble table with Cyan colour chairs. It has colourful peranakan tiles and replica nyonya ware as decor.
Peranakan Tiles

Peranakan Tiles

We ordered 4 different Platters to try from the Nyonya Delicacies Menu. The Nasi Peranakan Istimewa , Chicken Rendang Platter, Prawn Sambal Platter & Bibik Nyo's Ayam Klio (Coconut Curry Chicken) Platter.
Nasi Peranakan Istimewa $8.80

Nasi Peranakan Istimewa $8.80

The house special is Nasi Peranakan Istimewa which consist of flavoured rice with a small bowl of soup. It has Chicken Rendang, Prawn Sambal, omelette, achar, coconut serunding, plain fish curry and a palm size prawn cracker. This is a value for money meal at $8.80 which also includes coffee/tea and kueh of the day.

The prawn cracker was of the good Indonesian quality but it was starting to go soft. Maybe should keep in air-tight container before serving to customer. I would prefer Nasi Kunyit with this set instead of the biryani rice. The Achar was a bit sweet unlike the Nyonya spicy version. Coconut Serunding was moist . The prawn sambal was not too spicy and chicken rendang was tender and has a nice dry curry.
Bibik Nyo's Ayam Klio $5.80

Bibik Nyo's Ayam Klio $5.80

All other platter comes with yummy Nasi Kunyit, Achar, Coconut Serunding and a bowl of curry. The other 3 platters does not come with drink but you can top-up $1 for the house special which includes Tamarind Lemongrass, Barley etc. The platter set taste quite good but I like the Nyonya Kueh best. As it is not too sweet and has all the right texture.
Prawn Sambal Platter $6.20

Prawn Sambal Platter $6.20

For dessert, we ordered a packet of Ondeh Ondeh at $2.50 and 3 different choices to share. The kueh comes in bit size of about 1 inch square. It is of a good quality, better than those you get in the hawker centre.
Ondeh Ondeh,Chendol Agar Agar,Sri Kaya,Kueh Bingka

Ondeh Ondeh,Chendol Agar Agar,Sri Kaya,Kueh Bingka

The Chendol Agar Agar tongue has 2 layers, with the top layer of Gula Melaka jelly and the bottom layer of coconut milk jelly mixed with red bean and green worm. The texture is not too hard or soft and the sweetness is just right. Even the Ondeh Ondeh uses the good quality Gula Melaka. You can buy a box of assorted Nonya kueh at $20 a packet or individual at 90 cents each.

Overall this is a nice cosy cafe with tasty food, simple decor and prices are reasonable as you can get breakfast set for less than $5 and lunch or dinner set at less than $10. Good place to grab a bit just before you fly as it is open early at 7.30am and close at 10.30pm

If I ever at the airport in the early morning, I would try their breakfast set or the Nyonya curry puff.

This was a belated Father's Day celebration. This is a new branch at Park Royal at Kitchener Road Hotel. I was told they just opened on the 15th June 2011. At the moment the place is not very crowded unlike their UOB branch.

The high quality of food matches the nicely done up upmarket restaurant. Prices are of the high end. Small portions are enough for 3-4 persons. They serve Szechuan and Cantonese food.

As we sat down, they serve us with 8 Treasure Tea $3.80. This big cup of special blend of tea consists of 8 dry ingredients: Chrysanthemums, Jasmine, Lily buds, Chinese Wolfberries, Longan, Rock Sugar, Red Dates, and Mai Dong (Lilyturf Roots). The tea help to reduce cholesterol, aid blood circulation and strengthen the body's immune system.

The service was very attentive as they fill my 8 treasure tea cup with water when it was finished without me asking. Halfway during my meal, they also change plate.
Slice Pig Ear in Chilli Oil $8

Slice Pig Ear in Chilli Oil $8

The very thinly sliced Pig Ear terrains seats on a bed of crunchy sliced Kai Lan stems. This is a very nice spicy appetizer, only thing it is a bit too oily.
Double-Boiled Shark Cartilage Soup $12

Double-Boiled Shark Cartilage Soup $12

The Double Boiled Shark Cartilage Soup is served in individual earthen claypot. It is a rich milky soup with soften shark cartilage, crunchy water chestnut with wolfberry. It is high in collagen and good for the complexion.
Combination BBQ Meat $28

Combination BBQ Meat $28

We ordered 3 Combination BBQ Meat of Char Siew, Roast Pork & Duck. It was all nicely done. The roast pork has crispy skin and not too much fat.
Mince Meat Long Bean $14

Mince Meat Long Bean $14

Mince Meat Long Bean was not bad but I prefer the Crystal Jade version where the long bean are more deep fried where it is more char and shrink.
Braise Pork Belly serve in Whole Pumpkin $26

Braise Pork Belly serve in Whole Pumpkin $26

The star is the Braised Pork Belly in Whole Pumpkin. This is the first time I have eaten Dong Po Rou in a Pumpkin. The pork has very little fat and it was very tender. The soft pumpkin eaten together with the pork taste very good with a right balance of sweet and salty.
Fried Pancake with Crispy Floss $6

Fried Pancake with Crispy Floss $6

From the dim sum section we tried the Fried Pancake with Floss . It stuffing was slightly sweet like Char Siew Pau filling.
Home Made Bean Curd $3-$4

Home Made Bean Curd $3-$4

We ended the meal with their famous Home made Beancurd & Szechuan Pancake with Red Bean . We order one normal Beancurd and another Beancurd with Wolfberry ($4). The home made beancurd was very silky and smooth. It literally melts in the mouth. The Original beancurd comes with a jug of syrup for you to add according to the taste. While the wolfberry bowl is already sweeten with syrup.
Szechuan Pancake with Red Bean Paste $15

Szechuan Pancake with Red Bean Paste $15

The pancake was not bad & does not have very sweet red bean.

At the moment, there is a 30% discount for UOB card member for ala cart food bill until 31st Aug 2011. We paid $152.20 after the discount for 4 persons. Our most expensive item is the soup that cost $48 for 4 serving. You can opt for the daily soup at $16 which can be shared among 4 people.

It is a nice place for celebration and business lunch. It is just outside CBD and has parking in the hotel.
