Taiwanese food Smile May 02, 2013

When I think of Taiwan food, first came to mind is thin noodle with thick gravy and oyster. Another thing will be deep fried chicken fillet but I don’t particularly like it, it isn’t my type of food.

This stall serves ordinary Taiwan food. We tried noodle with thick gravy and oyster, chicken cutlet bento. This bowl of noodle was fine and nothing to “wow”. Whereas, bento was up to expectation, generous serving of mix veggie, half hardboiled egg, chicken cutlet was freshly fried, it comes with a bowl of lettuce soup, taste bland to me and no msg. I didn’t try the chicken cutlet so no comment on me. Actually, I like the mix veggie, it has small amount of deep fried anchovy and preserved vegetable, it well balance the overall taste with plain rice. If they could allow me to buy only the rice with veggie, I would be more delighted!

Wanton Noodle Smile May 02, 2013
Categories : Hawker Centre | Noodles

It seems that this is a popular stall for noodle. I wasn’t in good appetite and just ordered wanton noodle to take away. Wanton was OK, roasted char siew was so so and the noodle was the best in this humble bowl of food. It was springy without starchy texture, didn’t have the alkaline taste. If they could improve the wanton and char siew, it would be an above quality bowl of noodle.

I understand that it is only a neighbourhood food stall, stall owner needs to control their costs. For such an ordinary food, it isn’t making big money, it has to look after the general public’s acceptance. Some people may think that paying too much for a bowl of wanton noodle isn’t worth it. Furthermore, stall owner can’t ask for high price. Therefore, it has to balance the quality and price. Well, I have no choice to accept the reality.

Mutton Biryani Smile May 02, 2013

Whenever I want to eat biryani, I would patronised this stall because it is located right in my block. It seems that they are quite famous. It has long queue during lunch time.

Portion wise, it is very generous and big. One pack is enough for me for 2 meals! Therefore, it works out an economical meal for me.

Mutton cooked to the tendency with chewy texture, taste is good. Curry veggie is fine. The only drawback on that day was the rice, colour was too light, it didn’t tempt you for eating more.

This wasn’t my first time to patron, I still will go back when I feel like to eat mutton biryani. One is because it is so convenient to me and their mutton and curry veggie are taste fine to me, rice can be forgiven.

Casual Japanese dinner Cry May 02, 2013
Categories : Japanese

After a long day work, my colleague and I decided to go for a better dinner as it was paid by the company. The newly renovated Amara shopping mall has new restaurants to station, we give it a try. By the time we reached there, it was around 8+pm. This Japanese restaurant was quite full and we thought it should be ok.

We have to wait at the entrance before we could proceed to our seating, we were thinking why? As at that hour and in a weekday, properly they have insufficient staff!

Browse through the menu, it is similar to other Japanese restaurants for casual dining. 2 of us, working hard the whole day with an empty stomach, we ordered fermented soy bean with sparkling sake as appetizer. Follow by deep fried squid, stir fry mix veggie, eggplant with teriyaki sauce, steak with 2 tempura prawns and shallow fry fish. Overall taste was fin. I particularly couldn’t stand cooked fish with fishy smell and this one has it. This dish was a drawback to me.

We both liked the sparkling sake, it was refreshing and light in taste.

We were enjoying our meal and chatted happily. They kept coming to remind us their closing time at 10pm, that was around 9:30+pm. We felt annoying though. They couldn’t wait and gave us the bill at that time. By the time, most of the patrons were almost left, they started to do the cleaning, hence mopping the floor, etc. We felt bad if we insisted to sit until 10pm, we have no choice to leave immediately.

Probably this was our first and last time to patron.

Japanese pancake Smile May 02, 2013
Categories : Japanese

This is my all times favourite snack. Whenever I want to have something to bit on the street, I will definitely choose this Japanese pancake in fish form with either red bean or cheese filling.

There are numbers of places selling it, few of them I have tried. At the end of the day, I would prefer medium thick pancake with generous filling, it has a balance texture. Whereas there was a stall emphasised thin pancake with overflow filling, at first I thought it was a good buy. I was so eager to try it then I didn’t like it, filling was too much, I felt like I was eating the filling only.

This stall is always my choice.
