Ladies will love it Smile Aug 22, 2014

Categories : Steamboat/Hot Pot

I was lucky enough to get to dine here recently. Talking about location of the place, for drivers like me, its near the rear carpark (FOC!) facing the rugby field and you walk up the staircase near Omakase Burger and the entrance to the building itself. You will find it at the same floor as Ah Yat Restaurant. With seats overlooking the rugby field, this newly opened steamboat restaurant is huge, able to host up to near 240pax. They also have 3 vip rooms which can cater 6-8pax each (no minimum charge required). The aircon section is my preferred dining section as its restaurant standard, with comfy cool environment ,nicely decorated, airy and most importantly it comes with a manicure station after the entrance. Ladies get to do free manicure anytime, not just when there is a queue and you are waiting, thumbs up for that. From a fellow friend who did it, i was impressed with the time for each manicure, she was gone for a good 15min, i had thought its probably going to be a 5min rush job but i was wrong. But i'm too shy to try it smile though there is no gender restriction if you want to have your nails pampered. There is also a very grand looking 12 seater which is individual pot settings, highly recommended for business dining. Was told by the restaurant manager that the steamboat theme originated from fuqing (Fujian Province), pride themselves with fresh food and amazing soup bases to offer. The boss is a lady is also in the nail salon business that's why explains the concept mentioend earlier.

Every steamboat review probably is appropriate to start with the suaces! I counted a total of 24 are available, talked about being spoilt for choices! Interesting sauces seen include fish head sauce, mushroom sauce, beef sauce, fermented beancurd sauce, crunchy soya bean. The sauce that won us for the night is this garden sauce which is a in between of mookata sauce and thai sweet chili in my opnion. Cooked food items were also available since it was the $38++ buffet which we are trying out.

We selected the yuan yang pot with hot spicy soup and mushroom pot. The mala soup base is not for the faint hearted, if you love spicy soup bases, i definitely recommend this. Let's talked about the food now...

Meat - forget your boring thinly sliced meat, they serve good stuff, from the slice size and plate presentation itself you are rest assure you are eating in a quality steamboat place. Pork belly, kurobuta pork, mutton slices, short ribs, US Beef, beef tender and Angus Beef are available. My favorite was the mutton slice, angus beef and US Beef

Handmade Specials - handmade pork ball, shrimp glue were both pretty good especially the glue paste which is squeezed out like cream on cake. So after its cooked, its looks like twisties.
SeaFood - i got to try the Live

Prawns, whole flower grouper, fish maw, US Scallop. I like the fish served as a whole and rest assure u will find it fresh. But i recommend the restaurant to go easy on the amount of ice on each plate as it tends to get a bit messy because the ice will melt very quickly. The LIVE prawn may impress more if its still jumping though, like some who will serve it in a covered box smile . Scallops was good for me as well.

But would love to see it jumping :)

Surprise - we were pleasantly surprised when they dish out a abalone each. How often u get that in a steamboat restaurant, nicely sized leaving you wishing for more (you get 1 free with the buffet now and additional orders at $3 each, i thought that was cheap). Its important to cook the abalone for just 2 minutes, that will give you the perfect texture and not overcooking it.
Vegetable - although they have a whopping 16 vegetable type available, we kept ourselves contented with the flow of dang-o and lettuce. You can see, we were very much focus trying the meat above.
Sides - Fried bean stick is always nice to be added to the mala base smile . The 2 fishcake look alike buns we tried was the japanese curry bun and cheese bun with the latter being the clear winner. Its specially made by their supplier, with cheese oozing out after you bite into the fish cake like bun. Ho ciak! The japanese bun with curry on the other hand is mediocre. There was also fried pumpkin cake snack and red bean pancake to try but i was near my full capacity by then.

Drinks - The buffet standard comes with lime juice or water chestnut free flow and the servers top it up for you. They were nice enough to offer us a pot of 福清铁观音, a kind of 秋茶from hometown fu qing. For tea lovers, dun hesitate to talk to the lady boss about tea appreciation, you will be surprised she is almost like a tea guru. I was impressed with the fragrance of the tea and how refreshing it is. Never knew hot tea goes well with steamboat!

$6.20 for Signature Noodle Set Smile Jun 24, 2014

Was lucky to get to try this stall early in the morning due to the fire drill at my office. Was served immediately, things were ready by then (it was 10am). Ordered the mee pok set, with 10% discount for safra members, that makes it $5.58. The meepok was surprisingly good, very well scalded and blended very well with the generous pork lard and green onions, my only gripe is that it was a tad too oily, fortunately it wasnt overly spicy. The ingredients you will be given, 3 fish ball, 3 fish cake and 2 fish dumpling. The fishball's a winner, very soft on the inside and still generally springy on hte bite, definitely home-made i feel. Its not exceptionally big but the size made up for it. The fish dumpling and fishcake were pretty normal but the fish cake slices maybe due to only 3 given were slightly thicker. Overall thumbs up except for the price.

Of all the dishes only beancurd skin rolll with pork and shrimp impressed me $4. it came hot which is what i like. the char siew bao is like polo bun with char siew and its rather small with normal looking filling or more like a paste type. the braised chicken feet is more like our 卤鸭style. ok carrot cake was decent but I've had better before. ccf was plain with only shrimp, siew mai and har gao was normal but came in 4s instead of 3. poached lettuce was very plain and small in quantity. the osmanthus cake is small but tastewise acceptable

Impressive interiors Smile Oct 25, 2013

First of all I must say the restaurant really catches one attention with its name. Was honored to be shared by the owner himself that it was named after his 2 daughters. It also has a meaning to him as he went against all odds and even sold his house to fund this restaurant business, the "can do" spirit which alot of us should really learn from.

From car plates from US states to roman helmets to nazi headgear to golden record labels to variety of musical instrument...these were just some of the very nostalgic feel decorations you can find in the shop. In my opinion, just running thru each of them with yr eyes will probably take you hours I kid you not. We were told the highlight of the deco include the very old look standing hair steamer which is just placed beside a white metal sliding gate. Yes there's a old school sliding gate in the shop.

Furniture wise was non uniform ranging from sofas to glass tables to small tools and old school chairs, but it perfectly blends with the vast variety of interior deco. The owner also shared that they are gaining increasing popularity as a wedding photography option. I could simply understand why just looking at the efforts in dolling up the place.

For drinks, I tried the sunset boulevard which taste like a fruit version of ice lemon tea. It was nice and refreshing, served in one of those cool glass mugs.

I also like my mains - chicken curry with bread. The curry reminds me of Steam Sia version and is served in this nice saucer with a matching porcelain pot. For $10.90 it's not the best but good enough for me. My other guest who tried the pasta wasn't too impressed though but we are agreed the place's design do make up for it.

Food dun seem to be a main focus here as it was hard to tell what cuisine they specialize in but u do see a couple of interesting drinks and dish name on the menu.

I would recommend this for small group gathering of 3 to 4pax. And I'm sure you can be free from the usual noisy diners blabbering/chats and enjoy nice cosy conversation with friends. mad

Keep up the standard Smile Oct 11, 2013

Dun recall seeing this stall last time. The name seems to imply it moved from sim lim square last time. I ordered the black pepper steak which seems to be the only steak option here. Waiting time took around 4min which is acceptable. You will be given 2 satchet of chilli but no serviette which they should. I was pleasantly delighted by its taste and sauce and immediately made comparison with char grill bar. If only they hv given more coleslaw or baked beans, it could hv been a clear favorite. The slice bread is cut into 2 but it does bear the garlic spread taste. It was also good their steak did not come with too much fatty loin section. Overall a decent eat. mad
