Bak Chor Mee - My Style Smile Sep 05, 2012
Share on TwitterShare on Facebook
Categories : Hawker Centre | Coffeeshop

One would hardly get to know about this stall, situated within an old style coffee shop, dimly lighted with typical mini tiled flooring, giving one a nostalgia feeling, reminding more of JB style joints. Back to the main point, we were here for the bak chor mee, recommended by one of the colleagues. At $3 a bowl, my dried version impressed with its soup base and the fried pork lard. The minced meat and ball is not put on the noodles but in the soup, kind of unconventional to do that for typical SG style bak chor mee but it tastes really well, sweet and with good qty of ingredients. Was observing the uncle who prepared it, can tell its with years of experience that he had to dish out every single bowl. A tried, tested and verified good recipe i'm sure smile

$5 Value for Money Smile Oct 01, 2013
Categories : Hawker Centre | Noodles

i was surprised with the $5 option i ordered from this stall. Uncle was nice enough to send it to my table as i was sitting just nearby. He also took the initiative to give me 2 small plates without me telling so, thumbsup for that! 1st impression wasn't good, i was wondering what are my ingredients, i only see the noodles and the fried pork lard bits. Little did i realized the goodies all all buried. Combined with the chilli, this semi moist version is perfect, mixed with the pork lard bits which ads to the the bite, this $5 is definitely worth the money.

1st impression of the place is its very well decorated, with a retro old school nostalgic theme to it.
nice old school feel

Round marble table, vintage wall signage, antique phones and tv are just a few to name.

There is also a mini game stall with a fat chef statue on it.

You get to see the very very games like "go li" or marbles, color sticks, penguin climbing game, aeroplane chess etc, bringing back lots of old memories of kampung days. A nice surprize was that the mini game stalls also serves some tidbits which the stuff say is kachang puteh.

Not an impressive spread but a nice touch to keep the diners munching while waiting for the food to be served. Wanted to try their nyonya curry which i saw in some of the photos here and was advised serving for 1 comes in a bowl and not the pot. Looking at the picture, the pot looks very tempting and i ordered that. The food was presented nicely in those old school metal pot, served on a wooden block with french load as a side. Thumbs up for presentation. When i open the pot, i was kind of disappointed as the amount serve differed quite a little from the menu picture with only half filled instead of the 3/4 filled in the menu picture.

Well i guess that happens in most restaurants also smile. The curry chicken was nyonya style, cooked with potato and tomato. Its simple and straightforward , thick version of curry with spicy level definitely at a very friendly level. I also noticed they dun really serve it with any condiments like soy sauce or chilli, it may be a better option to do so in case customers would like a more enhanced flavor and could do so. But i must the curry gravy on its own lives up to its name as a signature dish, fragrant and making you want more. The french loaf that came with the set surprised me quite a bit, it was pretty good, i think they lightly toasted it again before serving, and it went so well by dipping it with the nyonya curry. In fact i feel the bread kind of stolen a little show off the curry hahaha.

Overall a fantastic eat but amount served could be improved. If the volume of pot of curry increases , i think i may just become a regular here. Anyway if i would to come again, maybe i will try the tom yum spaghetti which is supposedly another signature dish.

$3.80 for single scoop of the signature "hei" dark chocolate icre cream. the server had a hard time scooping out the ice cream though. packaging is cute and nice. for this kind of pricing and quality, i would say, worth it!
