Claypot Mee Tai Bak Smile Sep 25, 2013
Categories : Chinese | Rice

Decided to try this out after seeing the review on OpenRice. Its famous for a KL street food favorite - Claypot Mee Tai Bak. Priced economically at $4 and $4.50. The stall is located within tai Sun Eating House, new from recent renovations and a few new stalls to add. At the helm of the stall are 2 middle aged man, friendly in nature and always willing to strike up a conversation. They shared that they are probably the only one catering this unique dish which i totally agree. The stall front is also nicely decorated with LED and claypot display cabinet below the signage. The food was prepared right behind the stall front over strong flames and their specialty sauce. Ingredients were then added after its brought to bowl: prawns, one meatball, cabbage. When about to serve, a raw egg is also broken on top with lots of green onions as garnish. One interesting item added as well, minced pork with mushroom, more typically seen of those bak chor mee type but darker in color, braised long in a slow cooker. I love this kind of claypot presentation - piping hot food, perfect as a main course. The way to eat this dish is to stir it well and mixed it all up, allowing the temperature to cook up the raw egg. The style reminds me alot of our usual claypot noodles from ci char stall. Taste verdict - it was nice and easy on the bite, almost can just eat it with your sup soon without the chop sticks. But maybe i would prefer it heavier on the taste, more dark soy sauce perhaps? Also i would suggest to be more daring on the ingredients, yam, carrots, broccoli and seo bah are just some of the examples i like my claypot noodles with, perhaps these could also add another dimension to this mee tai bak variant. Not to worry too much about the pricing, the taste must be premium. I wouldn't mind paying u[ to $6 for this with more ingredients. With a bit of improvement, i think this stall will definitely do well.

Simple and Nice Smile Sep 19, 2013

First time trying this stall, tended my 2 young chaps with the mum sitting at the nearest table acting as cashier. Straight forward menu, chicken rice, ayam penyet and roti john. I ordered chicken rice and was prompted for the $3 or $4 version. I certainly did not regret the latter option, with a bigger piece of meat given and not rice. You help yourself to the utensils, chilli and dark sauce. The chicken rice is also served with a bowl of soup with lots of fried onions in it. tongue

The chicken rice taste fantastic, more specifically the chicken itself. It tasted freshly prepared and comes with slight crispy texture for the skin. The rice could be more enhanced with flavour though. The dark sauce on the other hand is not quite those suitable for chicken rice. Will certainly want to return and try their Ayam penyet next time.

Taste of Thailand Smile Sep 13, 2013
Categories : Thai

2 new restaurants opened up in this basement 3 area, one is Nara Thai, the other is Itacho. If i'm not wrong, they actually replaced the former premises of burger king. Decided to give Nara Thai a try after hearing that this brand name actually originates from Bangkok and highly rated. 1st impression of the place is its nicely decorated with a huge wall feature decoration and nicely shaped lamps hanging overhead. The corner seats all comes with high backing. The menu is a grid like display of all the dishes, not common but it does attach each item with a photo, makes it easier to visualize what the potential food likes. The servers are divided between the host/hostess and the servers. The host will take the orders via a iPad mini. I was thinking why dun come up with a menu on the iPad and let the customer check and pick the item themselves. And immediately let them have a heads-up of the total bill. That actually can be a cool idea.

I ordered Tom Yum Kung $19.90 (comes with prawns and straw mushroom in spicy lemongrass lime soup, the prawns are big i must say), Thai Fish Cake $13.90 (6 slices, with peanut sweet chilli sauce), massaman gai $15.90 (more of a sweet curry, and i found peanuts inside like those braised peanuts, interesting), green curry with chicken (the gravy goes very well with the fragrant rice), crab meat omelette $12.90 (comes with chilli sauce, nice texture with the crab meat minced) and Stir Fried seasonal vegeatbles with oyster sauce $10.90 (really good mix of vegetable, just that qty a bit small). For me the tom yum kung and green curry impressed me most. If i have to gripe, its probably the waiting time for the dishes to arrive, i had my dishes served minutes apart so that makes sharing dining a bit of a challenge. Also a suggestion for them is not to have the plate on the table from the start since they are serving by the plate (like the rice and individual portion mains) so that makes it a little redundant. I'm certainly keen to return for another tasting especially the interesting desserts on their menu.

There's currently a 10% promotion going on now. So it works out to be $23 per pax for me.

Zhen Jie in Disguise Smile Sep 09, 2013

Categories : Cantonese/Hong Kong | Chinese | Hawker Centre | Desserts and Cakes

You will not be able to tell that its a zhen jie outlet until you see the posters on the stall front. On the signage you will only know its a dessert stall but no signs that its the famous zhen jie outlet (dessert specialist IMO). Selling all kinds of HK style desserts, i opted for the tau suan which cost $1.20. Like the fact that the tao suan is not overly starchy. The accompany Chinese cruller (you tiao) also does not have that overnight smell, you get around 6 pieces of it. Overall a good eat.

There is a new drink that captured my attention - the mandarin orange sour plum drink, will give that a try next.

Beef Hor Fun Fail Cry Aug 26, 2013

Categories : Singaporean | Cantonese/Hong Kong | Chinese | Restaurant | Seafood | Zi Char | Kids-Friendly

They are the only ci char stall within this club house. Prices are slightly expensive with the cheapest individual dish costing $6. I was late for my game so chose the Beef Hor Fun for $6. They do not offer the black bean paste option. It turn out to be quite a disappointment. It tasted a little bland, more like hor fun with beef slices. Hor Fun usually taste nicer if you have wok fried the kway teow before hand before cooking it with the starch solution but nbased on hte hor fun looks, they didn't. You could tell the beef was the frozen type and it was a little hard. Will probably not want to visit them again. Average waiting time was around 15 minutes. Its an aircon restaurant just beside the pool but does not offer a view. It seems popular with small one table gathering though. Parking is at $3 per entry after 5pm. Get carpark rebate if you are a safra member.
