Lu Rou Fan OK Aug 21, 2013
Categories : Taiwanese | Chinese | Restaurant

i have been warned against the oily nature of the "lu rou fan", being not too friendly to the tummy. Comfortable setting is how i would describe the interior. You also see red lanterns hanging with dishes names on it around the shop. For orders, you proceed to the counter, place your order then get a queue number. i ordered the set meal which comes with one standard drink (i chose winter melon) and famous Taiwanese dish - braised pork rice. I also had a side order of honey chicken which cost $4.80, the other 2 version cost less. I wasn't impressed when i collected the rice set. Quantity looks ok but they give just one stalk of the cheap chye sim which was rather bland. Fortunately i asked for less oil when ordering so it did not turn out to be as oily as wha

t i've heard about. But the taste was pretty normal, the kiam chye wasn't flavorful enough as well. The winter melon drink was nice and refreshing though and it doesn't come with a lot of ice which is good. The honey chicken probably need some improvement as well. Firstly to present a dish of such quantity on a big plate is a mis match. Also i couldn't taste the honey taste n the chicken, maybe should have gone for the yan su chicken (salted) instead. They had a little red pepper as condiment but it did not enhance the chicken flavor. Certainly hope to see some improvement in this shop's offering. One thing to mention, i saw the staff kept munching away while serving and talking to client, not the best staff behavior i would think for a f& b outlet.

HK Cafe in Heartland OK Aug 15, 2013
Categories : Fusion | Restaurant

One of the new HK cafe in this area, replacing previously a japanese restaurant. I'll start off my review with the bill first. crackers (FOC), Fried XO Carrot cake ($7.90), 1 traditional Set with half boiled egg/hot teh/kaya toast ($4.50), Strawberry mash ($4.90), seafood soup set with xue ge ($12.90), finally top up another 10% svc and 7% gst to those prices. my total bill was $35.55 for 2 pax.

The interior is pretty simple, high ceiling, counter based ordering for takeaway customer and table ordering for dine in. a few lcd tvs lined up above the counter, much alike fast food restaurants. Staff are very lively though and repeats that if you need anything just raise your hand, they do not irritate diners by waiting at the side, I like that. The waitress couldn't tell me what strawberry mash was and it turned out to be strawberry syrup added to fizz drinks and sour plum added. It was pretty nice actually but a tad too expensive IMO. i was recommended to try the special seafood soup and xue ge promotion. It turned out to be a lot like ci char stall seafood soup but the soup was nice and sweet though, ingredients you get fish ball, some sotong, prawns and lean meat. The prawn tasted a bit "un-fresh" though which I feedback to the staff, they wanted to change a new bowl for me actually but I did not want to, its good they took the feedback positively. The xue ge was a little disappointing though, its probably mock hashima and not the real stuff, tastes more like normal cheng teng actually. The carrot cake had luncheon meat in it and also pork floss and some dried shrimps i think, quite a nice eat but i hope it can be less oily. The traditional set is very average and the milk tea did not delight with the cup a little dirty on the edges.

Certainly hope this place can take the review nicely and up its standard, competition is tough there especially with the prata joint pitstop just next door giving it a run for his money. Also one more thing the staff should note is to offer condiments or suitable utensils based on clients order. I had to ask for side plates and condiments on my own.

Mini Pork Lard Bits OK Jul 12, 2013
Categories : Food Court | Seafood | Zi Char

it was 10pm and was searching for a dinner place so decided to eat near home instead. Most of the koufu stalls were already closed by now so i'm left with ci char. Ordered the fu jian mian (black hokkien mee) at the counter outside and went back in to wait to be served. waiting time was around 5min, it cost $3.80 actually, quite a funny price. Pretty standard fare with fish cake, lean meat and chye sim, they do used quite a fair bit of small fried pork lard bits though. I was thinking it could have added some sliced fish to enhance this dish. Anyway at 10+, several tables were filled with senior folks drinking beer.

Ribs Review OK Jul 08, 2013

Categories : American | Steaks and Grills | Kids-Friendly

This outlet is located near of one the exit at B1. You can easily miss it if you don't try looking for the signage. It is actually a pretty big outlet. Ordered the St Louis Pork Ribs to try. It is supposedly the award winning dish with their home-made sauce. One with honey glazed sauce and one with black pepper sauce. My Groupon order also came with a coconut banana split aka cocona split. A little disappointed with the service for a start as they forgot my sundae despite me telling them I've waited quite a while. Though I'm having ribs, I was not given a side plate as well. I had to top up my own plain water as well after seeing no initiative from the staff to do so. The honey glaze lost out in terms of taste to the black pepper sauce one. Serving is pretty big though. As its glazed style, it looks like the ribs are coated with honey. The sides of french fries and coleslaw are pretty average. Fortunately the coconut sundae did gave it a refreshing end with its unique taste, different from the usual vanilla banana split we try. The regular rib costs $15.60.

Mushroom not pork OK Jul 08, 2013
Categories : Food Court

Must apologize i missed out the food photo though I had everything else. The highlight of this stall is that no pork is used in its sauce, which is actually mushroom-based. Trying to imitate the ampang style, the yong tau foo pieces are deep-fried again and served with the starchy mushroom sauce on top.

I ordered a 10 piece set with rice which added up to $9.50. SAFRA card members are entitled to 10% discount so I paid $8.55 in the end. It is definitely less flavorful than ampang style but I like that the yong tau foo is fried again as it makes them crispy to eat. By the way, this food court is one that is nicely decorated with the wooden horse sculptures.
