August Special Smile Aug 14, 2013

one of the new stalls in this koufu food court. Was attracted by the august promotion of juicy beef teriyaki going at $7.90 instead of the usual $8.70. The set includes few slices of beef, one egg, mushroom slices, lettuce and some chilli and one french bean as garnish. It also comes with a bowl of miso soup and a rice. The sukiyaki sauce was poured over it and ingredients stirred and mixed to the done-ness as per desired. After cooking the quantity of food shrank a little, fortunately being a hot food lover, i have no complains. But i must say i actually prefer dipping the beef into the honey brown sauce instead of the chilli sauce. The beef was nice and tender the sukiyaki based dipped in the brown sauce combined very well. The miso soup was also nice to add onto the plain rice to make it more appetizing.

Cyclist Friendly Smile Jul 26, 2013

One of the new eateries in this @punggol area, replacing a seafood ci char restaurant. This new cafe style setup immediately impress with its cycling theme and heartland type of food. The 3 road bikes serves as one of the prominent wall features and I think in a matter of time they will put up some autographed jersey as well (saw them near the sofa area). The whole place is huge and divided into a few section. The main area is with high ceiling fans and brightly lit. There is also akids play corner and another sofa are where u can chill while reading some cycling magazines. This section also has 2 tables that are more modern looking with matching chairs. Thenn there is a slightly more outdoorish section which overlooks the waterway, there's also bicycle racks catered for cyclists doing pitstops here.

The way to order here is to indicate yr table num on the order chit and the desired dish and qty, much like how we order steamboat items ;). I was only here for drinks and ordered bandung with longan, teh cino and a side dish of french fries. Loved it that the fries are instantly fried and served hot, hope they maintain this method of preparation. Maybe they can serve out more interesting sauces like how swensens do it. Teh cino was good but a tad too small a glass. Bandung longan drink was a dual taste experience with both the rose syrup & longan syrup taste both felt. With the nice radio playing in the background, its a fantastic place to chill, perfect for winding down.

I look forward to trying the other food on the menu from muslim cuisine to indian food to prata to western food, prices are just slightly steeper than usual prata stalls but for the ambiance and environment, one should hv no complains.

Wanted somewhere cool and quiet for lunch and decided upon this new joint along havelock road. Yes its air-conditioned smile. Parked near mscp blk 28A at beo crescent but i realize it may be better to park at blk 51 mscp instead since its just directly opposite. Simple interior deco with nice marble top tables and old style chairs. Likely a 40 seater restaurant. The staff speaks English so it was easy to make orders. There's also a lcd tv on the wall screening local tv, i enjoyed that and watch TV while lunching. From the menu it seems their signature dish is the stone pot rice so i opted for the lunch set meal, which includes one stone pot rice (i chose pork), one vegetable and one soy beancurd dessert and Chinese tea. I was also given some achar as appetizer. This achar is really thinly slice and the sour nature does bring out your lunch hunger LOL. My vege was served first, liked the sprinkled garlic on the vege. When the rice was served, it immediately reminded me its somewhat a in between of traditional Chinese claypot rice and Korean bibimbap. Served on a wooden holder, the bowl is so hot that anything that touches it sizzles for minutes. The bottom of the bowl is probably coated with oil, making the layer of the rice touching the bowl golden brown and crispy. The server was nice to prepare the dish for me, adding dark soy sauce to it and mixing it well for my consumption. She also explained a little the difference between this and claypot rice is the rice would get burnt so easily yet making the rice crispy and hot. Lup Cheong, minced meat slices and xiao bai chai makes up the dish. i wish there was a little more meat though for a $10 set i paid for. But indeed the rice was crispy yet not burnt, i guess its about the temperature and flame control that made it possible. One thing to mention is the belacan chilli went very well with the rice and they are quite "conservative" for the quantity served so just ask for more smile. Dessert was just a small soya beancurd, the lao ban toufu type, pretty average. Total bill $10.35 including the 50cents wet tissue. Hope to return next time to try the rice with their soup. if they could produce good quality tasty soup, it would be a pretty good combination.

But the dining experience can further be enhanced with more messaging either on the menu or the wall about the history behind this fusion styled cuisine, or maybe even showing in-house dishes recommendation on the TV.

i strongly feel for $4.50, this kway chup dish is probably one of the best value in money. In this semi restaurant style located under hdb flat, Teochew Cuisine Restaurant has since established itself as a popular dining place, especially for supper. My kway chup dish comes with duck meat, big intestines, bean-curd and some peanuts. Its not always about the quantity, the quality justifies its $4.50 price tag. With the kway cooked nicely, the slightly salty soup just opens up your appetite to finish up all the ingredients. The accompany 3 sauces also allow you to explore the different taste combination, vinegar sauce, chilli, and bean paste sauce. Anyway the fish soup and porridge is popular orders here as well. This place recently upgraded to electonic parking, so you just park and eat in peace, no more running after summon aunties smile

I declare Mat Noh a winner Smile Jul 09, 2013

Categories : Malay | Singaporean | Coffeeshop | Chicken Rice

Went down to try the chicken rice after strong recommendation from cycling friends. Its a shop house type of coffee shop with with 4 other stalls. Mat Noh actually takes up 2 stall fronts, one selling mainly the chicken rice and the other standard nasi padang fare. Self service is the way of ordering your food here. Ordered 2 of the standard 1 person chix rice set and also a plate of mixed gizzards and skin. The set comes with a bowl of soup. The rice is the garlic and ginger flavored chicken rice and not the plain version. The chicken is also topped with the crunchy flour bits from the deep frying. The chicken is meaty and well fried, you dun see the semi cooked redness in it. The fried spare parts are also worth mentioning, especially the skin, never knew it can be fried till orange and crispy. This all goes well with the chilli and dark soy sauce mix. Total cost was $8 for 2 plates of chix rice and 1 plate of gizzards mixed with skin. To me mat noh has even surpassed some of the Chinese hawker. Anyway an interesting sight from this coffeeshop is the make shift barber located opposite which seems to cater mainly to senior citizens, a sight you do not get to always see in Spore now, loved the laid back, heartlands atmosphere here.
