Revamped Market Smile Oct 29, 2013

Categories : Hawker Centre | Roasted Meat

Drove by the area and saw this Balestier market place is opened after closing for renovations for months.

Glad that the reno made the place brighter and airier. Not many stalls were opened yet but King's Roast caught my eye with its roasted meat selection, and of coz the cute looking logo.

I had a hard time deciding between roast duck, sesame char siew, normal char siew, sio bak, white chic, roast chick and oil chicken. Settled for roast duck and char siew combination ($5) in the end as it was gleaming and shinning well lol.

I also had a $4 dumpling soup to go along. The meat was the lean type which I like, very well roasted. But I felt the sauce could be better improved to match the nicely roasted duck and char siew. Fortunately the meats were good on its own. Do hope they improve on that.

My dumpling bowl came in six nicely wrapped sacks, perfect to go with my rice dish as mains. It's cooked with xiao bai chye which for once I get a stalk and not just a few pieces like others. They also had a bit of pork lard added to enhance the flavor which I sneakily ate it with my rice (I'm supposed to be on diet tongue)

I certainly want to try their Thai style toufu next time, it was placed behind the chef and its sheer size attracted me mad

Newly opened for 2 weeks, decided to try them out. They have made this coffeeshop brighter kit up than before.

As I was alone I could only evaluate their food based on individual portion dish. I've always like to use hor fun as a benchmark.

Waiting time was impressive with my hor fun served in less than 4minutes. It look overly starchy from its look but I was pleasantly surprised with its taste. The kway teow was nicely pan fried before hand, fish cakes were thicker than most places and sauce was perfect. I slurp up all the sauce for the hor fun in he end. For only $3.50 I give this the thumbs up. Hopefully can bring my folks here next time to do a more extensive food testing.

Crunchy Cookies Smile Oct 14, 2013

Passed by this new bakery shop, very near to 112 Katong. The shop entrance is a little "inside", probably the owners should show more signage outside about what they sell. Its a nice small cosy shop with several cute designs of bread spotted. Mostly importantly its cheap, they have this 3 for $3 promotion but not sure when it will end. Bread cost around $1.60 for standard price. I bought the cookies instead at $3. There were around 5 pieces of it nicely wrapped in a pack. I like the cookies as its not the soft type but crunchy. So u need not worry about staining your teeth after that. Like the chocolate chip added which gives it an additional bite. You pay at the counter after selection.

Nasi Padang Smile Sep 11, 2013

This huge plate for $6. I came by at around 3pm, they were still serving but the place was empty at this non peak hour. There were several gravy types available and according to the guy there, the lontong gravy look alike is the most spicy and warn me about it, i opted the less spicy version instead. For dishes i ordered fried chicken, cabbage, tempeh and anchovies peanuts. Fantastic eat, my only gripe is that the food is not hot enough, they should hv turned up the heat more but again maybe its non peak hour so they turned it down.

Come in the Evening Smile Sep 11, 2013

Categories : Hakka | Chinese | Coffeeshop

Located at the same coffeeshop as the famous toa payoh bai meefen, this stall is popular with diners with its YTF offering. Healthy buffs may not necessary like this place as the crunchy fried stuffs are the main attraction in my opinion. From fried tau kee to ngoh hiong to wantan, my order delighted me much with no noodles, done dry style with the sweet sauce and chilli drained over it. I did add on water cress vege though which was also nice. Tip: i realized its better to eat at this place at night when the soup has been boiled for the whole day, it just taste sweeter IMO. My set cost $4.50.
