No Cockles Please Smile Sep 10, 2013

This stall has remained despite the coffeeshop owners changing hands. Famous for its satay beehoon and cuttlefish Kang Kong. I ordered the $3.50 portion with the cockles. 1st impression is the gravy was a little oily (see photo) but i soon realized it actually helps to enhanced the flavor when mixed, much like how laksa chilli oil works. Ingredients wise you get lean meat cuttlefish (yew yu), lean meat, kang kong and pig liver. Tip is to stir it up immediately once served coz that the piping hot temperature of the food cooks the ingredients further. Though the sauce loses out to east coast old recipe, its good enough to satisfy any satay beehoon craving. Thumbs up. Self service here though.

Why no Gravy? OK Sep 10, 2013

Categories : Cantonese/Hong Kong | Hawker Centre | Seafood | Zi Char

Located right after the gantry carpark entrance, Hong Yun has been reputed or their white bee hoon offering. Being a fan of you huak's version, i came by to do a taste comparison hoping that i have a new joint to visit instead of the sembawang area which parking is always an issue. Located under hdb flat, Hong Yun is one of the few stalls within the coffeeshop, so its not the sole business occupying the premises. The Hup Chong ytf is supposedly the other star of this coffeeshop. I ordered the $6 white bee hoon and the kailan with anchovies $7. First impression of the bee hoon its definitely the dry version and not the semi wet type like You Huak's. But the white beehoon taste smooth and easy to the bite. I feel it will be better if its served with a little gravy but again maybe that's exactly how they want to differentiate themselves with the competitor. It also comes with fried pork lard which sembawang's version doesn't. Other ingredients included sotong, chye sim, prawns, eggs and lean meat. The kailan vege did not impress, tasting very average and the accompanied anchovies does not compliment the dish at all. Despite average eats, i must say i like their special chilli sauce, not too spicy and it does goes well with the bee hoon.

Horlick and Sesame Smile Sep 10, 2013

Surprisingly crowded for this HDB cafe style set up at 820pm on a Tuesday night. Most of the crowd look like young PMEB, still in their office attire, maybe they leave at the nearby The Peak which should house many many young couples. Creamier serves ice cream and waffles mainly and of cse the usual coffee etc. As the place was packed, i opted to just try the ice cream which cost $5.80 for 2 scoops. Opted for horlicks and sesame which both were very refreshing taste compared to traditional ice cream. I must say their average scoop is pretty big as well. I hope to return soon one day and try the ice cream together with the thick looking waffles. No GST or service charge is applicable here.

The season is in. So i joined in the durian fever. This stall has always been one of the highlights in that area infront of library, with its rows of durians and styrofoam packed durians on offer, owners shouting marketing chants etc. Price update, for D13/24 (i've no idea the difference actually), the smaller ones are going at $5 per durian, buy 4 get 1 free. After buying you can opt to eat at the small tables behind the stall or request them to be packed into styrofoam boxes for take away. The former option not for people who are fussy about cleanliness. There is a water tub available for hand washing after eating but they do not offer tissue or plain water as a perk though. Anyway the larger ones are going for $10 each and buy 2 get 1 free. The other premium durians are sold by weight from $8 per kg onward. i forgot to take my 5 durians but i can tell you on average it has around 4 seeds, medium size. Remember to request for 红肉instead of white, i feel that taste better.

Wrong Bai Mee Fen OK Aug 22, 2013
Categories : Singaporean | Chinese | Coffeeshop | Seafood | Zi Char

Came to this place by mistake, actually wanted to try the white mee fen at block 124 but mistaken "Xing Yun" for "Hong Yun". They also offer white mee fen and is more like fried white bee hoon, nothing close to the sembawang you huak type, more like a chao ta bee hoon version with its crispy base. Setting is in coffeeshop style, the servers aren't as proactive so you actually order at the counter if you dun wan to wait. I ordered the $6 version for 2 to share and also a double egg spinach $8.

The white bee hoon also comes with prawns, lean meat, a bit of fried pork lard, fish cake, egg and beansprout. Very average eat, but it does taste better with the chilli padi soy sauce. The spinach dish makes me miss that from Yi Jia South at lorong 7 which has the triple egg version, lucky restaurant's one is only with century egg and salted egg, the soup is more to the bland side in comparison.
