This stall is quite popular with the CBD lunch crowd and it's easy to see why. The fishball minced meat mee pok, dry with chilli, was pretty good. Noodles were al dente, and the chilli was nice and spicy and flavoursome. The Soupy Minced Meat Noodles ($3.50), wasn't too bad either. The soup base wasn't too laden with MSG and the ingredients were plentiful.

The ice-cream sundaes are still good, but the food pales in comparison with the main attraction of this old-school American-styled diner.

The Meatballs in Pepper Sauce ($8.90) was the only passable dish of lunch, even if it was a bit generic. Meatballs were chunkily textured and the pepper gravy was smooth and spicy but the potato mash was reminscent of the instant powdered mix variety.

Prawn & Fruit Salad ($11.90) with lettuce, prawns, raisins and a mango yoghurt dressing - the prawns tasted a little too crunchy and alkaline

Fish & Chips ($14.80): so sub-par. According to the menu, Swensen's supposedly sells 1 plate of this every minute in Singapore. I can't see how this could be true. The fish was dry and tasteless, the tartar sauce thin and watery, and the coleslaw tepid

Sirloin Steak ($21.20): the steak was dry and required a bit of chewing to get through

We'd stopped by for supper and sat indoors because of the muggy heat outdoors. Unfortunately, the air-conditioning that night had broken down. Instead, there were a couple of air coolants placed strategically around the cafe for ventilation. Consequently, the indoors was barely cooler than the outdoors. We saw a few people trying to covertly shift the coolants to face their tables, only to have the wait staff tell them that they had to turn it back to its original positioning so there's some kind of air flow around the stuffy cafe.

But for the ridiculous lack of air-conditioning and stifling warmth of the indoors, supper would have been really quite pleasant because the food was surprisingly good.

We shared the Oven Roasted White Fish ($24.30) with yuzu sauce, roasted potatoes, cherry tomatoes and baby French beans. This was really quite good. The fresh fish, charred with a smoky accent, was moist and flaky. A piquant citrusy yuzu cream interplayed nicely with the creamy mildness of the fish

The standard of the food here has noticeably gone down, with the grub ranging from mediocre to average and pedestrian.

We ordered almost everything on the appetizers and sides menu for sharing, and got a few mains to share as well. With the exception of the onion rings and mushrooms, the rest of the sides and appetizers weren't finished.

We had:

1) Beer Chilli Cheese Fries ($19): good, with a generous helping of melted cheese and chunky beef chilli. But, you've gotta eat this piping hot. It was a turgid yucky mess once it got tepid

2) Calamari ($25 for large) with marinara sauce was unfortunately overcooked so the squid rings turned out a tad rubbery. These needed a bit of chewing to get through

3) Spicy Whitebait ($17) with lemon garlic mayo was pretty alright, the batter was nicely spiced and flavoursome

4) Fried Shrimp ($17) with lemon aioli was bad. The prawns, with shells on, weren't fried to a crisp, with the batter being too thick and all, resulting in mushy meat and a tough shell that you couldn't just eat together with the miserly meat.

5) Buffalo Chicken Wings ($27 for large) marinated with hot NY sauce, was good. The hot sauce was spicy enough and the wings were juicy and flavoursome enough. Crudites and cool ranch dressing provided some respite from the heat of the hot sauce

6) Double Cheese Nachos ($42 for large) with jalepenos, guacamole, sour cream and salsa, were pretty delicious, but like the beer chilli cheese fries, also got a little disgusting once it got tepid and the cheese hardened into an unappetizing cold lump

7) Beer Battered Onion Rings ($12) were one of the better sides, with a whole moist and juicy onion ring covered in a thick batter and fried to a crisp

8) Herb Garlic Fries ($10), thick cut for a substantial bite, were also pretty good. A liberal sprinkling of dried herbs and garlic salt made this quite the yummy snack

Maybe it's because I'd heard a couple of unimpressive reviews of this place, or maybe it's because the sprawling restaurant always seems barely filled whenever I walk past it, but I admittedly had low expectations for lunch. Nonetheless, I thought the food was way better than expected. Not memorably great, but pretty alright, with above average food, and a very value-for-money set lunch menu. Service was a little choppy and unorganized though, which was disappointing, seeing as the restaurant was only half-filled when we dined for lunch.

We had:

1) Risotto ($27) was pretty good. Al dente grains, starchy without being too heavy, seasoned by a nicely rounded mushroom base with the heady essence of truffle

2) Asparagus Salad ($18) comprised enough sinful ingredients to make this a dieter's nightmare. Garlicky ciabatta crisps, plentiful streaky bacon strips, and a poached egg that helped bind the crisp crunchy greens together with its oozy eggy goodness

3) Haddock Fish and Chips ($25) was a little lacking in salt, but nothing a little squeeze of the lemon and some tartar sauce couldn't cure. The fleshy fillets were moist and flaky, while the batter was thick, flavourful and crisp

4) Truffle Fries ($12): delightful and a real crowd pleaser, piping hot, crisp and evenly salted with truffle, these were snapped up in a flash
