Pictures are at http://thehungrybunnie.blogspot.sg/2015/09/com-nam-vietnamese-street-eats.html It's surprising that the sister restaurant to Nam Nam, incidentally located next to Nam Nam at Raffles City, hasn't quite taken off. The self-serviced eatery was only half-filled, unlike Nam Nam's perpetual full-house. Perhaps the "broken rice" concept isn't quite as distinguishing, or as internationally-beloved, as Vietnam's national dish - the comforting pho. We had: 1) Spicy Beef Rice Noodle Soup ($9.90): a robust mix of tangy and spicy flavours, but let down by the tough chewy thick slices of beef and undercooked, almost raw beansprouts. 2) Vietnamese Sizzling Crepe ($10.90): excellent, with thick slices of tender pork belly, succulent prawns, fresh lettuce, pickled radish and julienned cucumbers. Skip the beansprouts, these had an undercooked alkalinity. 3) Napa Cabbage Soup ($5): sweet and delicate, and choc-a-bloc with bouncy juicy squid balls. 4) Squash Soup with Pork Ribs ($5): middling; the pork ribs were dry-ish and soup base lacking in depth. 5) Crispy Shrimp & Sweet Potato Fritters ($6.50): authentic, but I hated the shells-on shrimp. Would have much preferred the deshelled version Other Ratings:Taste 3 | Environment 3 | Service 3 | Clean 3 | Price 3 Recommend 0 |
Pictures are at http://thehungrybunnie.blogspot.sg/2016/02/min-jiang-goodwood-park-hotel.html Specialising in classic Sichuan and Cantonese cuisine, Min Jiang's food is conservative but not tedious. It's an oldie but evergreen goodie, where you'd go to for comforting familiar fare. We ate: 1) Prosperity Abalone Lo Hei ($78 for small): nuanced and balanced. Not too sweet, just the way I like it. We had the lobster topped one, and supplemented with Crispy Salmon Skin ($22) 2) Crabmeat Tofu ($44): Min Jiang uses fresh crabmeat, thankfully, instead of frozen meat. Loved the gravy. 4) Roasted Peking Duck ($38 for small): Paper-crisp skin, with nary a trace of fat, swaddled in soft egg rolls and burnished with sweet hoisin and fresh chives. The prawn crackers was a nice touch, I hardly see that served alongside peking duck anymore. 5) Deep Fried Sea Grouper with Sweet & Sour Sauce ($105 at $15/100gm): sparkling fresh, lightly battered and fried to a delectable crisp, served swimming in a pool of sweetly piquant gravy dotted with peppers. 6) Mango Pomelo ($8): smooth, creamy and refreshing 7) Ingot Flower Tea ($8.80 per glass): kitschily served as a tight coil, which unwinds with the introduction of hot water. Expensive but really lovely tea. Other Ratings:Taste 5 | Environment 5 | Service 5 | Clean 5 | Price 4 Recommend 0 |
Full review's at http://thehungrybunnie.blogspot.sg/2015/09/london-fat-duck.html The food was a bit of a hit-and-miss, and shockingly, the duck was lacklustre, whereas the barbecued pork was excellent. Also, the Scotts Square tenant is an occupiers-liability lawsuit waiting to happen; the floors were so oily that, even with my rubber-soled heels, it was a feat trying to keep from slipping. It was a nightmare walking in and out the slippery floors. We had: 1) Signature London Roast Duck ($12.80 for regular): gamey and chewy and dry. Terribly disappointing, considering its signature dish status. Suffice to say, we didn't finish this. 2) Barbecue Pork with Honey ($14.80): saving grace of the meal and absolutely smashing. Beautifully caramelized with a sticky honeyed glaze, and meltingly luscious, this was perhaps the best char siew I've had in a while. I'll return just for this. 3) Hongkong Wanton Noodle ($6.80): decent, if a little pedestrian. 4) London Roast Duck Noodle ($7.80): disappointing that the noodles was better on its own, plain, without the duck, which was double whammy with its gamey taste and lean breast cut. Full review's at http://thehungrybunnie.blogspot.sg/2015/09/my-little-spanish-place-bukit-timah.html This cosy little restaurant is homely and charming. In part credited to the gregarious familiar service. And that impressive jamon bar. We ate: 1) Joselito Guijuelo Iberico Bellota ($25 for 25gram serving): cured for a whopping 48 months, intense and decadent but so worth the cholesterol. 2) Gambas al Ajillo ($16): fresh sweet shrimp sizzled with olive oil, fried garlic chips, and chilli pepper; that umami gravy was most sumptuous. 3) Croquetas ($12): stuffed with jamon nubbins, cream, and mash; excellent on its own. 4) Tortilla de Patata con Aioli ($10) - a thick, dense potato omelette layered with onions, and sided by aioli: passed muster, but was forgettable. 5) Huevos Fritos con Chorizo y Patatas ($18) - fried eggs with chorizo and potatoes: What I expected was a breakfast hash of sorts, but this was really just a mish-mash of thick fried chips, fried chorizo dice, and a fried egg sunny side egg, strewn together. Rather disjointed and jarring Other Ratings:Taste 3 | Environment 3 | Service 4 | Clean 3 | Price 3 Recommend 0 |
Full review's at http://thehungrybunnie.blogspot.sg/2015/09/mrs-pho.html The traditional fare at Mrs Pho may be a little clunky, but had a rustic, homestyled, authenticity to it. And although a squishy tiny place, service is speedy, friendly, and helpful. Our dishes arrived barely 5 minutes after orders were taken, in quick succession. We ate: 1) Cha Gio ($3): lovely chunky texture, with wonderfully juicy porky flavours. 2) Nem Nuong ($3.50): decent, but failed to leave an impression, in light of the most amazeballs minced patties in Hanoi just earlier this year. 3) Pho Ga ($7.90): delicate enough, but missing in richness of depth. A tip is to ask for extra lashings of basil and mint, essential in making it all come alive. 4) Bun Bo Hue ($7.90): a hot and spicy beef noodle soup laden with stewed beef that was so-so, and a fantastic Vietnamese ham 5) Bun Bo Xao Sa ($7.90) - chilled rice noodles tossed in a peanut-onion dressing, and topped with beef slices stir-fried with lemongrass: must-try and the best thing here, with its clean and clear and crisp flavours Other Ratings:Taste 3 | Environment 3 | Service 4 | Clean 3 | Price 3 Recommend 0 |
