Set up by the same people behind Gin Khao, Som Tam is a Thai fusion restaurant that opened a month ago at Orchard Central. Named after a popular Thai Salad, the restaurant’s space is decorated in a neutral colour palette and greenery, with plenty of natural light streaming through the windows during daytime.
At Som Tam, one can expect complex, bold and exotic flavours. I was initially overwhelmed by the plethora of selections categorized into street delights, salads, burgers, rice sets, noodles, pastas, grills, mains, soups, curries, drinks and desserts. Ah, decisions, decisions! We finally managed to make up our minds thanks to the staff’s recommendations.
It was a scorching afternoon so we started with some chilled beverages to cool down. The Thai Matcha Yen Float ($6.80) is absolutely superb and I highly recommend it. I’m not a fan of Thai Coffee ($6.80) as I dislike its acidity, but Som Tam’s rendition won me over with its sweet and refreshing notes courtesy of coconut juice. The Thai Iced Tea ($4.20) deserves two thumbs up too!

Som Tam ($6.80), essentially green papaya salad dressed with sour lime, hot chilli, salt, fish sauce and palm sugar, is presented in a novel fashion-in a jar. For toppings, we added Salted Egg ($1), Dried shrimp ($1) and crackling Deep-fried Sweet Prawns ($2). Shake to mix and enjoy! This crunchy salad did a good job whetting our appetites.

Crispy and not at all oily, the Tom Yum Truffle Fries ($6.80) was absolutely appetizing, with no one flavour overpowering the other. The heat builds up over time hence, if you’re good with spice, you’ll relish these fries.

The al dente Aglio olio Tom Yum Prawn Pasta ($14.80) twirled its way into my heart with its tango of garlic and tom yum notes. The fresh, crunchy prawns are conveniently de-shelled so you can dive straight into the glorious pasta without any delay.

Each skewer of the Gai Satay ($9.80 for 6) exudes a seductive smoky char. The flame-grilled chicken meat is juicy and tender, with just the right amount of fat. Dip it into the green chilli sauce for optimum enjoyment.

The Oozy Chicken ($10.80) may not be the most attractive looking dish at Som Tam, but it arrested our senses with its wonderful flavour. Deep fried chicken pieces, luxuriating in creamy salted egg yolk sauce, glittered with curry leaves, is certainly difficult to resist. Personally, I felt some chilli padi can take this to a higher level.

Dessert was also utterly scrumptious. Do note that although this Shibuya Toast is named after the famous Bangkok dessert café, it’s quite different. Som Tam’s After You Toast ($8.80) is an interesting play of sweet and salty flavours from butter, palm syrup and gelato of your choice. The toast itself has a crisp exterior and pillow soft interior. And with whipped cream, its ahhhh! Worth every single calorie!
Som Tam offers a myriad of Gelato flavours ($3.20 for single scoop, $5.80 for double scoop). If you’re feeling adventurous, there’re unusual ones such as Green Curry and Thai Basil with Chocolate Chip. The Green Curry gelato (white colour as the kitchen ran out of green colouring) is an acquired taste; hubby was a fan but I wasn’t. We both love the Thai Basil studded with chocolate chips. Both scoops boasted the same silky texture that glided down the throat easily. Other gelato flavour options are Vanilla, Chocolate, Sticky Rice, Watermelon Sorbet, Matcha and Thai Tea.

To sum up, Som Tam has elements of what customers are looking for- some classic Thai dishes and numerous innovative fusion creations. Prices are wallet-friendly, portions generous, and location is convenient, making it an attractive spot for spending time with loved ones or for a quick but gratifying refuel on a workday.

Don’t you wonder why Dim Sum buffets are mostly held only on weekends? Such awesome meals should be available EVERYDAY! Si Chuan Dou Hua @ Park Royal has certainly got it right with their Nostalgic Dim Sum Buffet Feast, which is served daily from now until 31st Dec 2015.
Unwind in the restaurant’s elegant oriental ambience and pick from 50 items listed on dim sum menu. We ate so much that I nearly rolled home, but there were still so many dishes I wanted to try! Si Chuan Dou Hua’s experienced culinary team consists of Cantonese and Si Chuan Chefs, so you can expect diverse offerings from both cuisines.
Upon seated, the Tea Master promptly filled our cups with finesse.
Chilled appetizers are always welcomed in Singapore’s hot weather. We sampled Sliced Pork in Garlic & Chilli Sauce and Seaweed with Shredded Carrot & Radish in Chilli Oil. The pork slices in the former were well marinated and tender, while the latter tasted surprisingly similar to jelly fish.
Limited to a single serve, the Barbecue Platter consists of BBQ Pork Ribs, Teo Chew Stewed Duck and Soya Chicken.
Also limited to one portion, the Double-boiled Cartilage Soup warms the soul and fortifies the body with its rich, savoury broth. Other choices include Sichuan Hot & Spicy Soup, Soup of the Day and Thick Soup with Shredded Abalone, Mushroom, Chicken and Conpoy.
I’ll start with the inventive dim sum creations first, before moving on to well-loved classics.
Much thought as been put into the Signature Pork Belly Roll with Yam. The Chef employs a special technique to retain the juices within the pork. Moist, tender meat, yam and pillowy steam bun-what a superb combination!
Another intriguing item is the Fragrant Yam Cake with Waxed Meat. Flavours and textures are beautiful here. You get a crisp exterior juxtapose with soft yam, enliven with the saltiness from the waxed meat.
A twist to the usual Salted Egg Yolk Custard Bun, the Steamed Yam Bun with Salted Egg Yolk is a unique creation that I have never tried before. Hidden within the soft steamed bun is a core of sweet refined yam paste contrasted with golden salted egg yolk. Absolutely delish!
The Pan-fried Duck Meat Bun with Goose Liver Sauce packs a punch with its intense sauce. I was not a fan of the Glutinous Rice Roll with Chinese Sausage though, as I find its skin too thick and starchy.
Siew Mai alone is aaahhh! With abalone I’d be all ooooh! The Siew Mai with Diced Abalone is something you should not miss.

Traditional favorites, the Hakka Dumpling with Turnip, Pan-fried Carrot Cake, Pan-fried Chive Dumplings, Pan-fried Bean Curd Skin Roll and Prawn Dumplings were skilfully executed. I particularly adored the Prawn Dumplings. Their thin translucent skin had just enough tensile strength to hold its generous filling of fresh crunchy prawns accentuated with coriander.

Apart from steamed and fried Dim Sum, the Nostalgic Dim Sum Buffet Feast also includes 9 Chef Selections. We tried Braised Pig Shank in Vinegar and Ginger, Bean Curd in Spicy Minced Meat Sauce, Stir-fried Beef with Bitter gourd in Black Bean Sauce, Stir-fried French Beans with Minced Meat and Stir-fried Fish with Celery in Sichuan Spicy Sauce. The lattermost’s unfamiliar flavour didn’t sit too well with a couple of my dining companions, but my taste buds relished in its robust sauce.

For those who can’t do without carbs, go for the silky smooth Minced Meat Porridge with Cuttlefish, or the comforting Casserole Rice with Chinese Sausage.

Dessert options are mild and light, perfect to wrap up a heavy meal. The highlight would be the lusciously smooth Home Made Bean Curd, glittered with healthy sweet wolfberries. Fans of chilled desserts will find bliss in the elegant Chilled Osmanthus cake sweetened with honey, and Almond Cake brightened up with tangy mango sauce.

Now you know why I over ate- too many scrumptious temptations in one place!
The Nostalgic Dim Sum Buffet Feast is available daily from 11.30-2pm Mondays to Thursdays ($32++ per adult and $20.80++ per child), 11.30am-1pm and 1.30-3pm on Fri, Saturdays Sundays and Public Holidays ($38++ per adult, $22.80++ per child). UOB and HSBC Credit and Debit Cardholders dines free with every 3 accompanying diners from 1st Oct -31st Dec 2015.

Convenient, clean and comfortable Smile Sep 27, 2015

Love Teochew Muay but not a fan of the warm and stuffy coffee shops synonymous with the humble fare? Centrally located along River Valley Road, ChaoZhou Porridge allows diners to enjoy comforting bowls of piping hot porridge in a sparkling clean, air-conditioned (and haze-free) setting.
I like how ChaoZhou porridge presents their dishes-exhibited in the open concept kitchen. Chilled appetisers, cold crabs and desserts are displayed in a chiller nearby. There’s no doubt that this is effective method to entice hungry dines to order more food! Some dishes are cooked a la minute, and can be found in the menu.
We took advantage of the promotion, Happy Dinner Set at $12 per pax (min 4 pax), to check out this relatively new eatery. Do note that reservations has to be made via Hungrygowhere and this promotion is valid until 30th Sept 2015. Not included in the set is Porridge, which goes for 70 cents per bowl. Rice is also available at the same price.
We started our dinner with Steamed Meat Ball in Porridge Water. The springy meatballs are made with pork, with vegetables for a subtle crunch. Big Sotong with Homemade Sauce was our favourite dish that night. The squid was steamed, then chilled and served with an addictive sweet-sour sauce with a spicy kick. Excellent execution indeed, as evident from the perfect texture of the squid-tender and pillowy.
Get your dose of Omega 3 from the Chaozhou Steamed Fish. The mullet is prepared by steaming, after which its gut is removed; this technique retains the juicy and original taste of the fish. For the final touch, a hand full of Teochew salted vegetables blankets the fresh fish providing an additional dimension in flavour and texture.
Other savoury dishes included in the set meal are Braised Delights comprising of Taupok, bean curd, eggs and peanuts, Fried Vermicelli with Cabbage and Golden Mushrooms and Fried Omelette with Radish. The lattermost is another highlight of the meal- the egg was skilfully fried to an attractive golden brown shade, with burst of saltiness from diced radish hidden within the fluffy interior.
We also tried popular favourite such as Fragrant Mined Meat ($4.20), Preserved Vegetables ($2.20), another bowl of Teochew Salted Vegetables ($2.20), and Salted Egg ($1.30 each) We ended off the meal with Crispy Fried Taro Rolls (included in Happy Dinner Set), which had a crisps exterior and a core of soft taro studded with small bits of braised duck to add a hint of saltiness to the otherwise saccharine root vegetable.
Our only gripe about the meal, was that the fish meat was a tad too dry. Apart from this, we were pleased with the gratifying dinner, efficient service and comfortable ambiance. ChaoZhou porridge is not only open for lunch, but operates until 5am daily, to cater to diners who love suppers.

http://madamechewy.com/2015/09/21/arteastiq-plaza-singapura/

A recognised name in Singapore, home-grown teahouse and social painting studio Arteastiq has opened a second outlet at Plaza Singapura. Exuding chic refinement, this is a little piece of oasis that makes one forget you’re in the heart of all the action.

As a boutique teahouse, Arteastiq takes pride in its tea offerings. Invigorate the senses with chilled teas or soothe the throat with a cup of hot brew. I highly recommend my all time favourite, Iced Pomelo Tea.

A collaborative result of 3 well-travelled chefs with expertise in modern European, Asian and Pan American cuisine, Arteastiq’s new menu is truly one of a kind. Mains are grouped into 2 segments- “Ladies Affairs” comprises of sophisticated and lighter options while “Gentlemen’s Dinner” is made up of hearty meat-centric plates.

For a refreshing start, go for the healthy and delicious Soba salad, Nordic Lights ($16). The presentation is lovely, isn’t it? Greens, smoked salmon, soba noodles and cherry tomatoes are tossed in light Asian vinaigrette, and served in a tortilla bowl, which provides textural variation.

Aphrodite ($25) is a luxe rendition of the ubiquitous Eggs Benedict. Sitting on toasted brioche, the succulent Maryland Crab cakes were crowned with perfectly poached eggs, as well as a dollop of creamy Hollandaise sauce spruced up with smoked paprika.

There’s something intrinsically satisfying about fried chicken and waffles. Louisiana Love ($22) is constructed with pan-fried chicken pieces cloaked with buttermilk, nesting on a bed of whole-wheat waffles (less guilt). On the side, there’s Arteastiq own improved version of margarine, a delish maple butter and red vegetable slaw.

Satisfy the carnivore in you with The French Affection ($35), a sumptuous platter of NZ Black Angus Ribeye Steak (230 grams), accompanied with sweet potato fries and Bearnaise poached egg. The tender, juicy steak with brown sauce was truly a smack down on flavours. Mention-worthy are the seriously good sweet potato fries- within each addictively crispy exterior, is a substantially filled interior of comforting orange carbs.

Seafood lovers will adore Boston Love Boat ($29). Beneath the buttery, flaky pastry, lies fresh prawns, mussels and scallops in a soul-warming, layered seafood saffron stew. Take a bit of stew and fluffy pastry and let it mingle in the mouth- ahhh bliss! Once again, the delectable sweet potato fries make another appearance in this enticing dish.

Aphrodite and Louisiana Love are from the “Ladies Affairs” menu while The French Affection and Boston Love Boat are from the “Gentlemen’s Dinner” section.
The “Sweeter Sides of Love” dessert menu offer artisan treats to satisfy the most discerning palates. Indulge in Ode to Nectar ($12) a slice of moist and rich honey chocolate mi-cuit, accompanied with a scoop of premium gelato. If you prefer an elegant dessert sans the sugar rush, check out Silk Thread ($13), an interesting rendition of the classic crème brulee. The barely-set custard is smooth, creamy, and infused with Osmanthus, resulting a delicate and refined sweet ending.

Making quite a statement upon its arrival is Monet ($12), one of Arteastiq’s dessert teas. The combination of French Rose Tea and Champagne Vanilla Gelato came off really well.

Arteastiq @ Plaza Singapura is a sophisticated, comfortable and convenient venue for a romantic date or Tête–à-Tête with girlfriends. Working nearby? Take advantage of the weekday brunch special, which starts from $15 and include a complimentary speciality tea.

Like the Mandarin Gallery Flagship outlet, the Plaza Singapura branch also has an Art Jamming Studio for art enthusiasts to unleash their passions and escape the stress of fast-paced city life. Immersing in art is a beneficial activity to conclude a stressful work day or recharge over the weekends.

http://madamechewy.com/2015/09/01/gin-khao/
Gin Khao, which literally means Eat Rice, is a casual restaurant located in East Coast Park that serves Thai Food. It’s interior is spacious, and ambience laid-back with homely and welcoming décor. The local company takes pride in using only the freshest ingredients, and even imports rice, garlic and sauces from Thailand for authenticity.
We started the meal with the Tom Yum Talay ($12.80), a classic soup often used as a benchmark for Thai restaurants. While most other places use water as a base, Gin Khao uses chicken stock to provide sweet undertones. Fresh prawns, mussels and squid bathe in a spicy broth that awaken the senses which was thankfully, not overly numbingly spicy, hence went down the throat easily. If you prefer more “oomph”, just inform the waiter to increase the heat levels.
Larb Moo ($7.80), a warmed minced pork salad with mint leaves, also comprises of diced onions and tomatoes for that that addictive crunchy texture. The little chilli padi bits certainly made its fiery presence known. This was too spicy for me, but hubby took it with no sweat.
Seafood Green Curry ($12.80) with crunchy rice crackers were lovely, but it was Moo Yang($12.80) that left a deeper impression. Thinly sliced three-layered pork belly is grilled over charcoal for that alluring aroma. The delectable, tender meat is accompanied with a specially concocted sauce prepared with Thai green chilli, garlic, lime, fish sauce and a secret ingredient.
Another unforgettable dish was the Kang Ob Woon Sen ($16.80), which is essentially juicy crayfish simmered in Thai garlic and pepper sauce in over high heat in a claypot. What shone in this dish, was the springy glass noodles, which soaked up the mouth-watering sauce well. It comes piping hot, so be careful when you dig in.
Gin Khao’s Watermelon Fried Rice ($11.80) is a welcome change to the usual Pineapple fried rice available in most Thai restaurants. This satisfying staple, brightened up with refreshing cubes of freshly cut tropical fruit, should not be missed.
Thai Tea Molten Lava Cake ($8.80) is not a common flavour but is undoutedly a befitting end to a Thai meal. The thai tea flavoured cake itself is moist, however its core of condense milk was not very flowy. You can choose from coconut, mango, palm sugar, tom yum (yes, tom yum!), chocolate, vanilla or lychee sorbet to accompany the lava cake.
Beverage options at Gin Khao are aplenty, which comes in handy to douse the fire from tantalising spices. We tried Thai Ice Rose Milk Tea ($4.80) and Perrier with Honey & Lime($6.80). The former is delightful, without the heavy bitterness and acidity one would find in poorly prepared Thai teas.
If you’re a fan of bold Thai flavours at wallet-friendly prices, Gin Khao is a good choice. Its comfortable, upbeat setting makes it a suitable venue for family meals and gatherings with friends.
