nice to look. not good to eat Cry Jan 30, 2013

For the birthday of two lovely ladies (kids?) in our group of girlfriends, these were a box of four colourful cupcakes from Designer Bakes, $21 for 4 cupcakes.

And apologetically, this was good to look, terrible to eat.
Thick unyielding fondant that tasted like a mix of marzipan and sickly sweet sugar with loads of colouring.
The cupcake was dry with a dollop of vanilla buttercream/ chocolate cream depending on the flavour of the cupcake. Even a prepacked Sunshine muffin tastes better than this.
Just look.
Take some pictures.
Blow the candles.
Slice it up if you'd like.
And order dessert somewhere else.

crazy to be eating at kraze Cry Jan 30, 2013

quick dinner before the jersey boys!

this was terrible. the chilli beef was not very flavourful. the cheese was stingy. and i wish it was more melty.

I decided on a salmon burger.
veggies were fresh and the salmon fillet was good with creamy cheese sauce.

but then we had an order of a carbonara that we thought would be failproof.
and indeed. it was proof of a failure.
oh my.

Sending Josh for his 3 week Brunei training so we did a late dinner at the airport. Everyone's ordered a soup item smile

Qiu Lian's latest offering was marred only by the braised pork. Fatty cuts of meat and yet they were still not braised for long enough to melt in one's mouth. It wasn't hard separating the fat from the meat since neither was tender. Is this the way braised pork china-style should be? That aside, the noodles were al dente as if eating chinese style fettucine. smile And the braising sauce was a crowning delight.

Mini wok's herbal soup broth was surprisingly tasty and the set comes with a selection of vegetables, some tunghoon, pork slices, sliced mushroom, crabstick and fishmeat items. We liked it that the soup was kept bubbling throughout and was still hot by the end of the meal.

Jin Yu's fish soup was... to be subjective, the ample slices of fish meat were fresh but the soup, even with the addition of carnation milk was not saved. It lacked flavour. A terribly watered down version.

breakfast before 8am at the airport.
tcc or killiney?
he chose killiney.
12 years my senior.
every bit the family we never really were.
it's been awhile since i missed you this new year's at grandma's.
catching up at a time and place that couldn't be more perfect.
in the east.
early morning so that ah kim could sleep in.
and sharing of a new addition to the family by years' end. smile

the horfun was mediocre.
plain boiled flat rice noodles.
covered with a sauce that had bare whiffs of a savoury seasoning.
the chicken slices were adequate
and the chilli was a lifesaver.
no dishsaver.

disappointing dean & deluca Cry Jan 30, 2013

Felicity.
This was a central setting for the characters in the show and I had the impression that this was no different from a regular Starbucks.

But stepping in to their brand new outlet on the 4th level of Orchard Central saw me walk through their grocery store aisle before getting to the main seating area of the bistro. So now I know. Dean & Deluca is a gourmet coffee/pastries shop mixed with specialty food products. There were meats as mains and sides on display. The sandwiches all wrapped and... ready to be reheated. I don't know about you but this was sorely unappetizing for me. It's like being in the deli section of a regular supermarket. Except this was gourmet. Which really just meant the prices were of a gourmet standard. And that's really just as far as it goes.

I wanted a bacon apricot roll and to my horror, I see the chef picking the last remaining one up with his tongs and that cleared the plate on display. So let's just settle with the one right next to it.

Quiche Lorraine. This was savoury. Good on taste but otherwise, the puff pastry was a bit thick to the bite from the reheating. Bacon bits were good. And nothing else really. Light bite it was.
And tempted though I was to pick up the breads from Maison Kayser that were on display, I decided I didn't need to spend that kind of money here after an unsatisfactory $8.20 slice of quiche.

And then there was the luscious looking rounds of beef tenderloin.
Just at $12 a pop, they looked like a real steal.
And while we were debating on the side salad with a list price of $18, we only realised at the counter that they charged the weight of sides by grammes.
I'm not sure if that applied to meats as well. But all the portion sizes for the mains (meats/ fish) were standard on display.
Turns out the side of grilled chicken salad was just $3.
With an array of graps, olives, green apple cubes and grilled chicken, I'd be happy eating just the salad really. smile
The beef? It was well done. Overdone perhaps. The sides were crisp and dry. And the meat within was just notquitetough yet. I enjoyed the meat more than my quiche. If that could be of any help as a point of reference.
