whatever the weather
hokkien mee

whether you like it or not!

I think that pretty much is my love story for this plate of hokkien mee.

I've never had a bad plate of this. The noodles are always fried al dente with enough bite yet be able to lock in the juices from that umami gravy that it's simmered in and stir fried on demand. The turnover for the noodles are high, promising a fresh plate of hokkien mee every time. The prawns are fresh and squid rings ample.

The chilli? They have peanuts in that and that's really the special part about that. perfect complement to the noodles.

$3. Comfort food.

Decadence Smile Sep 25, 2013

A small cosy outlet tucked away in the quiet corners of Millenia Walk. It extends lengthwise and has just enough space for a table of 4 and a narrow walkway. Walking further in, you find a communal bar counter top with swivel chairs. And a shelf of merchandise for sale.

Here for a healthy treats baking workshop conducted by cafe owner, Celine, herself. A vivacious character, she makes you feel like you're right at home here in her shop. A family who dropped in for some brunch was tended to by Celine, talking to their child and making sure the food is to their taste. It's this kind of personal service that has become a dying breed in our society today.

Generously sharing her recipe on the most popular non-chocolate dessert at their shop, we set out to try our hands at the various stages of baking their shop's own carrot cake.

While waiting, I had a flat white ($5) redolent with the fragrance of single origin beans from Papa Palheta and a blueberry crumble muffin she made specially for us.

Messing about with cream cheese frosting, we got to frost our own cupcakes and try the extras. The carrot cake was moist and light. Complimented with the savoury sweet and rich cream cheese frosting. This was a dream. And she very endearingly prepared their original mini lava cakes retailing at $3.90 instore for us to takeaway.

I popped the lava cake into the microwave for 10 seconds and as the name aptly implies, it flowed out like hot lava after i cut it up for sharing at home.

Perfect place for a lazy Sunday brunch. Quiet yet cosy. I'll be sure to check out their new outlet at Craft Bakery Holland village.

we got ourselves some light bites.

i love anything torched but not overcooked. This was nicely aburi-ed salmon with an assortment of vegetables in sushi rice rolls topped with roe that bursts with a pop in your mouth.

then there were also the quintessential salmon sashimi sushis and what's that?

mantis shrimp. new on the menu.

it looked less scary on picture.

now that it was served. it looked like woodlouse!

eating this was like being on fear factor. (it's psychological)

but tasted a lot better than it looked.

try it yourself.

We had a huge problem deciding what to get for our girlfriend on her birthday. All we knew was that she wanted a chocolate cake with a lot of nuts.

Well then, with that description, we traipsed over to Pine Garden to place our orders. $84 for a 2kg hazelnut chocolate cake. But we wanted it special.

A Chanel bag? But they said that would be 3kgs for a minimum order. And for how many people? 30-45.

Ohmy. So what could they do with a 2kg cake?

make it into a pretty gift! smile Wrapped with generous fondant curls and layers. We needed a top up of about $80 to get this done.

and it was all worth it!

Layers of moist chocolate cake assembled together with hazelnut cream and choco crispy balls.

Every bite with a delicious crunch.

Be warned though, it's a lot of cream we're talking about.

between the 14 of us and about 5 repeated servings, we managed to murder three quarters of this cake so i think it probably serves 25 people comfortably.

why yes, i'm at bedok 85 and not eating those minced meatball noodles.

the queue was just horrendous. not that you can see it.

just look at the orders written down, pages and pages. and i had to wait 45 minutes for my order, if i placed it.

just around the corner, this massive business caught my attention with their efficient services.

dishing out plates and plates and meeting their orders with at least 6 people on stir fry duty and another 6 more taking orders.

let's indulge a little shall we.

this was delightfully sinful. a black sweet soysauce stir fried plate of flat rice noodles and a smattering of lard within. The noodles were given that umami breath of the wok. Fried with barely cooked beansprouts, i loved the fishcake, eggs and of course, bloody cockles that came in my $3 plate of friend kway teow.

best dinner choice after a crazy day out in bedok reservoir and no, i didn't miss the bcm at all. smile
