Thorn Amongst the Roses OK Mar 18, 2023

Hort Park is a beautiful location and this restaurant is set within the park. I have been to this restaurant several times as it is the only option for food and refreshments within the park. This time, I ordered the vegan burger. The plant based patty was very juicy and yummy. Fries were skinny and crispy (if you like Macdonald's fries, you'll like these).

There's an indoor and outdoor sitting area. Many large tables (10-12), with fewer smaller tables. I prefer to sit inside (Aircon) and despite being indoors there are plentiful plants giving an outdoor feel. Although there were many empty large tables, I was told they were reserved (mind you the time was 1.30pm), and I was sat outside (bring ear plugs for the noisy fan).

The service has been less than jolly on the times I've come. It is very difficult to get service and the wait for the food is long. For plant and nature lovers, this is a never o'mind as you enjoy the surroundings. If they improved the service and some of the food, this would be a good destination dining restaurant.

Delicious coffee and ice cream! Smile Dec 23, 2022

Stumbled upon this place while bicycling around Sentosa. The highlight was definitely the coffee flavoured soft serve ice cream. Coffee ice cream can be hit or miss, but Baristart was perfect. There was a deep flavour to the coffee ice cream with a great balance of mellow bitterness and creamy sweetness. The Hokkaido milk ice cream was also good, but the coffee ice cream was definitely the star.

We also ordered some espresso drinks. The flavour of the coffee was good too. I think that the only negative is that the atmosphere wasn't amazing, but that's more about the Sentosa area instead of the cafe itself. We will def be going again.

Icy experience OK Dec 13, 2022
Categories : Multi-Cuisine | Café | Frozen Yogurt | Ice Cream and Gelato | Burgers and Sandwiches

To start things off: the ice cream is good. The flavours are unique and I especially enjoy the sea salt hojicha. Unfortunately, this is where my praise ends. I really wanted to like Birds of Paradise. I love unique ice cream flavours, especially floral and tea-based ones, and I try to support local businesses - but the multiple negative interactions I've experienced here have left me with a sour taste in my mouth. The staff literally attempt to police how you eat your ice cream, most recently going so far as to try to charge me for two single scoops when I ordered a double scoop cone, just because they thought I was planning on sharing the ice cream with someone. On a previous visit, they tried to charge me double their posted fee for an empty cup (double size), because they decided they didn't want to give me a small size cup depsite having ample supply, instead insisting on a charge not listed anywhere.

Why does it matter if I share my ice cream, so long as I've paid for it? Why is it ok to randomly double their stated charges for extra cups on a whim? If this is the policy they've decided on, that's fine - just don't post conflicting information on the menu and condescend your customers when they try to understand what's happening.

Is this an earth-shattering issue? Of course not. In the grand scheme of things, it's minor, and it's always important to remember that individual employees aren't responsible for the policies.

Un-maccha-ed Mediocrity OK Dec 11, 2022
Categories : Japanese | Desserts and Cakes

I am a serious matcha and matcha dessert fan, so I was excited when I chanced upon Maccha nearby Tokyu Hands. We sat down and ordered the matcha chocolate parfait. The menu is pretty expansive and the prices enticing. Service was quick and smooth. Sadly, the praise ends there: the matcha dessert itself was incredibly mediocre. The soft serve was very weakly matcha-flavoured, and the construction of the parfait led to an unappealing mixture of soggy cornflakes and jelly cubes. The matcha chocolate itself was advertised as a specialty item but it was honestly forgettable and didn't mesh very well with the weakly flavoured soft serve ice cream. Especially being on Orchard Rd, there are so many options for matcha-based desserts in the area, such as Matchaya in Takashimaya: if you're a hardcore matcha person, I would head elsewhere instead. All that said, the price point of Maccha is very competitive, especially for their non-dessert items. I would stop by there again if I was in the area and hungry given the price point and service, but I would not seek Maccha out again for dessert.

Ng Ah SHIOK! Smile Dec 11, 2022
Categories : Bak Kut Teh

My family has been coming here for years. It is a classic bak kut teh eating house: busy, informal yet delicious. The service is quick with attentive staff, but the food is really where Ng Ah Sio shines. The broth is flavourful - perfectly peppery with a robust profile - and can be topped off if you need more, and the side dishes include vegetarian options in case any members of your party don't eat pork. Highly recommend the bean curd skin if you are looking for a side dish with a sweet flavour and chewy texture, The tau pok is another excellent companion to the bak kut teh. Make sure to arrive early to avoid the queue on busy days! Truly Ng Ah SHIOK!!!
