Crabiliscious? OK Oct 19, 2012

Categories : Coffeeshop | Seafood | Zi Char

This review contains two sections: Food and Service.

Heard that Big Eater Restaurant serves great crab dishes and fully crowded during the night. So, my mother, my grandmother, my aunt, and myself made our way down to be awed by their delights.

FOOD:

Here is what we ordered:

Plain rice = $1.80

Baked Crab with Special Egg Sauce = $41
Comment: Very delicious. They let you choose the crab to be cooked for your meal. My grandmother claimed that the crab was not the one she chose (This was smaller) but... well, it was delicious smile mad

Hotplate beancurd = $9
Comment: Totally not worth it. The prawns were really small. This has got to be the worst Tofu dish ever - Cooking Tofu takes a lot of skills, and I have eaten enough to know this isn't of average quality. My family was extremely dissatisfied. We did not finish this dish. sad

Sweet and Sour Pork = $9
Comment: After the shock from the Hotplate Beancurd, it was plain obvious the chef was better at cooking the sweet and sour pork dish. Enjoyed this one. Delicious! lol

SERVICE:

We got a table to seat quickly when we arrived thanks to the staffs' efficiency. A plus point to note.
However, when my grandmother requested for a change of crab because she insisted that the crab was not the one that she chose and suspected something fishy, the staff turned NASTY. Like, real nasty. We gave a shrug and was fine with eating the crab that we were given. But we will not be returning in another year because there are many other great places to eat with friendlier staffs that equals Big Eater Restaurant.

Total bill amount $60.80

Lunch at espresSOUP Smile Sep 08, 2012
Categories : Singaporean | Restaurant | Chinese Soup | Kids-Friendly

Decided to try espresSOUP for the first time, since it's conveniently located at Jurong Point smile
The whole bill was about $20 - 25 because of the free lunch upgrades. It's really worth it to dine on weekdays.

Pumpkin soup smile
- My mum ordered this, and it was delicious! I finished half of it for her even after I finished my own Minestrone. It was THAT good.

Hot green tea
- Served when you order an upgrade.

Minestrone <3
- Totally in awe with it. The spice was just right, the taste was awesome.

Half a Prawn wrap
- Finished it within seconds. I nearly forgot to take a picture, so here's a half-finished one lol

Chicken - something soup.
- Yeah I can't remember the name of this one, but I will never order it again. The chicken meat wasn't tender enough(and they give you plenty of that), the soup was just full of spice. It's hot, hot, hot. Can that even be labelled as soup? Gosh.

-----

Okay, overall espresSOUP is just similar to "Soup Spoon". Nothing special to comment about it, except that it might just be a tiny bit cheaper.

Lunch at Bakerzin Cry Sep 06, 2012
Categories : Bakery

Decided to have lunch at Bakerzin with my lovely mum, since she'd been hinting all week long that Bakerzin has an awesome set lunch promotion menu. So, why not? smile Please read the overall summary at the bottom of this review as well.

The ambience is nice, and the place is conveniently located.

We ordered a lunch set menu which included an appetizer, main course, and beverage. We upgraded our beverage (+$2.50).

My mum's Latte ($5.40). It was normal, just like any latte we would have gotten in other cafes.

My Mocha! ($5.80). Tasted like Milo with plenty of chocolate. Not the best, but still okay.

Pumpkin soup, $5.90. This was good.

Waldorf salad. $10.50. Very fresh and tasty. Love the apples smile

Teriyaki chicken rice. ($13.90) I've had better. Honestly, it was a great mistake to order this. The meat was tender, but the taste was awful. There was a little taste of vinegar and the sauce was horrible - is that even teriyaki?

Braised pork belly rice. ($15.50) My mum had such a hard time swallowing this whole bowl of rice. The pork belly meat didn't help.

---------------

Overall summary:

Bakerzin, like what my friends and family told us, is know for desserts - cakes, mooncakes and stuff.
Thus, do not make the same mistake as I did. Do not order Chinese food from Bakerzin, unless you want your lunch time to be a moody one. It was a total waste of money for us, we made a huge mistake. We should have ordered desserts and Penne instead. Although I rated Bakerzin a "cry" for its food, it must be known that this review excluded any desserts of any form. I strongly believe that desserts would be rated a "smile" on my next visit.

The total bill for this visit was $40+.

Take home message: Always order what the outlet specializes in. smile
P.s. Will be reviewing desserts next time I visit Bakerzin.

For an overview, the food was good, but service was bad.

First part of the review = Food
Second part of the review = Service

-------------------

FOOD:

The cold crab is a highlight of the restaurant. @$28
Yep, it was delicious. The crabs (we ordered 2) had quite a lot of meat in them.

Teochew Pig's Trotte.
I didn't fancy this at all, but my aunts said it was nice.

Braised goose.
To be honest, the meat was soft but... nothing else that's special about it.

Fried Liver Roll.
So-so. Not too good, but not too bad either.

Spinach Toufu.
Super delicious! My favorite dish, apart from the Cold crabs. It's difficult to get Toufu to taste like the gravy; the chef did a good job on it. Try this dish some day, and you'll know what I mean.

Oyster Omelette.
Not bad. My aunts loved it.

Chilled Jellyfish.
Uh-oh, this dish definitely has room for improvement. It's ... soft, and ... mucky? Not sure how to describe it, but it has a big difference from the normal chilled jellyfish that you get from Jap restaurants.

Seafood Mee Sua.
This dish will give you 2 prawns, 2 sotongs, and 2 scallop in it. Tastes normal, just like you'll get from anywhere that serves Mee Sua.

--------------------

SERVICE:

Even though we booked a table, we were still required to wait 30 - 40 mins to enter.

All tables were filled, the staff were extremely busy, but it doesn't mean that they have to be rude to my family.
I accept careless - because it's understandable.
But rude? - Big no.
The best customer service is to plaster a fake smile on your face even if you are tired, stressed, irritated, or whatever. The staff of "Chui Huay Lim Teochew Cuisine" failed at that.

Efficiency was near 0. Be it requesting for chilli sauce, menu, or the overall price of the receipt (we had to hit a minimum of $200 for discount voucher to be applicable), the staff were just so forgetful. You can forget once, twice, but - for the case of getting more Chilli sauce - thrice? Honestly, if the food weren't so good, I'd be in a bad mood that day.

Lastly, attitude level was near 0 as well. It's like a combination of all the above.

P.s. The good ratings are for the food only.
