I shouldn't have taken that long to visit Wimbly Lu Chocolates Cafe, but now that I have, it sits comfortably at the top of my favourite cafes in terms of food! I visited the cafe twice in a week - it's so good and also because it's part of my school assignment (self-inflicted) requirement. What do you think about Wimbly Lu? I compare their famous waffles with Creamier's waffles:

Don't even think about it, just order this! Wimbly Lu Chocolates Cafe's waffles with ice-cream ($8.50) are to-die-for, and I can totally tell why after the first bite! The monologue in my head just went bonkers for a while: Oh my god, this is fantastic. Why did I wait for so long before coming here? And then, whoa, I think it's the best waffles (yet). Cafe-hopping is expensive business and so I haven't been to a lot, especially to the new fourth-generation wave of cafes mushrooming again in the last few months. But let's just compare this to the other cafe with waffles as their specialty - Creamier. I would say, Wimbly Lu wins, hands down! Given that they are quite different in terms of plating, their idea of what the perfect waffle mouthfeel should be like, I'm just giving a verdict on the overall.

I prefer Wimbly Lu's classic style of presentation, and at the same time it's done so normally, effortlessly, but so well done. Creamier is a little tower of two smaller waffle squares, much sweeter and crispier but so much so it has an almost biscuit feel to it. Wimbly Lu's is closer to a pancake and just occasionally crispy at the right places.

Creamier would be a wiser choice if none of Wimbly Lu's flavours tickle your cravings: Vanilla Bean, Cheesecake, Rum & Raisin, Salted Caramel, Honey Cinnamon, Milo and Chocolate Truffle, but I think they have all the popular yet unique (the latter came first) flavours in-store. Creamier does have the sorbet versions if you like it that way too. But if you haven't been to Wimbly Lu and are reading this... just go, okay? You will love it.

Nowadays I reserve my mocha orders at cafes for cafes that people rave about because I don't want to waste my calcium loss on well, bad coffee. Wimbly Lu's mocha ($5.50): wonderfully executed, a little too foamy but still settles nicely on the palate, a little heavy on the chocolate side and less so on the caffeine. If I have to stop myself from guzzling the whole cup down, yes it's good.

I wanted to get a chocolate tofu cake but they ran out, so I ordered the Double Chocolate Cheesecake ($5) which is very decadent and rich, none of the cloying sweet textures and all of the calories I don't mind having. I like the little whimsical touch of chocolate tracing over my plate, it just cheers me up so much more. But I'll still say: go for the waffles if you're going for the first time! The desserts are worth having too smile

In addition to the food, I am impressed at how they kept their prices low with their quality of food. Too many overpriced cafes nowadays for the substandard quality of food, and yet people patronize them time after time (oh god why). I think Wimbly Lu is one of the few cafes that will endure through time. The nearest MRT is Lorong Chuan, a bit of a challenge to navigate over by foot but it can be done under 15 minutes.

My favourite cha chan teng now :) Smile Aug 20, 2014

Categories : Cantonese/Hong Kong | Dim Sum | Roasted Meat

Legendary Hong Kong in Jurong Point is the latest buzz around Singapore's foodtopia in recent weeks, with people hailing it as "the best cha chan teng in Singapore" and offering roast duck "better than London's". That got my attention quick enough, because of three reasons.

1. I just came back from London with pretty excellent roast duck.
2. You can describe a lot of restaurants as your "favourite" but not everything is the "best".
3. Hey, Jurong Point is my territory and a lot of people know that. *jumps onto bandwagon*

My first impression of Legendary Hong Kong is... damn, I feel like I'm in Hong Kong already. My second impression? I want to fly to Hong Kong now! Legendary Hong Kong is the biggest attraction at the new Mongkok Street at Jurong Point, a collaboration between the shopping mall's management team and Hong Kong Tourism Board, so I guess they succeeded.

The interior design of the whole restaurant models after cha chan tengs, from the floor tiles to the uniforms of the service staff to the background music belting out Sammi Cheng's Canto-hits... and even the classic TV screens playing TVB variety shows. I haven't been to Hong Kong yet but I've watched enough TVB to know that this is pretty close to the real thing itself!
The metallic exterior of the kitchen area of Legendary Hong Kong also reminded me of the bygone days of Victor's Kitchen before their renovation, but less squeezy and also no strictly-Cantonese speaking service staff.

When in Legendary Hong Kong, if there is only one thing to try... it's their roast duck. They sell it as a whole, half or serving portions, but that is more suitable to order when dining with a bigger group - so we ordered the roast duck rice to get a taste of what this legendary roast duck is all about.

The meat was succulent and thoroughly marinated, tender yet retaining a chewy texture. The skin is very flavourful and tasty, breaking with a satisfying crisp for every piece. My take on the lemon sauce is that it is pretty unnecessary and doesn’t add any points to the roast duck, but perhaps because the roast duck itself is already very flavourful. It tastes very authentically homemade. There were about 30% bones from the portion in the photo, and they interrupted the enjoyment of the roast duck itself.
Overall: When it comes to quality of the meat itself, Legendary Hong Kong is surprisingly better by a considerable margin. Nevertheless, I would say London Chinatown Roast Duck still provided a greater level of enjoyment as I never had to bother with pausing to deal with the bones and simply continue stuffing myself happily. When you dine at Legendary, I would recommend you to order the whole/half portion to be able to truly taste enough of the delicious meat for a satisfying meal here.

I had not settled my chee cheong fun craving ever since I came back, so I jumped immediately at the opportunity when I saw the recommended sign beside the 春风肠粉 (the first one in the cheong fun category). ORDER THIS. It is definitely the best cheong fun I've tasted in my memory. The cheong fun is also thinly sliced with multiple layers, enveloping juicy and crispy prawns. The chefs know what true crispiness should be like. I shall try my best to describe it: finely netted crunchy. I love this and will order this on my own the next time I visit.

The milk tea is well, expectedly good.
You cannot imagine my happiness that I have the perfect dimsum place so near my house. I used to travel an hour and a half to Victor's Kitchen or at least town area to get dimsum. There are so many things on the menu too! You will find me back here again. Very soon. Maybe tonight.
P/S: I want to rave less of this so I can reduce your expectations for this place, but I think there's no need.. I think they can impress you all the same. They do not open from 2.30 - 5.30pm. Do not attempt to show up at peak hours or you will have to queue for one hour (or more).

Guess what? I was so enticed by the other dishes in Tanuki Raw's menu that I came back for a second visit. I am in crazy need to expand my stomach space so that I can eat many dishes in one seating. Another attraction about Tanuki Raw is its affordable prices and fusion vibes that I really enjoy immersing myself in. Have you not gone there yet? Get in the know about the promotions that you cannot miss out (I did, regretted, and planning my third trip). Read about the first visit here.

This time, I found myself craving for some Japanese curry and therefore, Tanuki Curry is the choice of the night. It definitely did not disappoint - I love the richness and wholebodiedness of the curry flavour. If I were to compare to the most relatable Japanese curry in Singapore - CoCoICHIBANYA - it will be about twice the intensity of flavours but not overpowering. The chicken cutlet was an awesome pairing with the Japanese curry with its crispy breaded crumbs layering and tender meat. Extremely satisfying.

After trying the Tanuki Raw's Oyster Mentaiko Set, I'm two minds about which one I liked better! I was quite surprised that the oysters came in this presentation rather than just... you know, oysters. It was da bomb - the oyster was SO juicy and fat! The fried breaded crumbs were actually a very thin layer, the rest of it is the oyster itself. You've got to eat it with the tangy cod roe sauce, it's very lusciously thick. The rest is just yummy history.

Tanuki Raw has happy hour promotions that you cannot miss out. Happy hour promotions include $2 for freshly shucked oysters (limit 6 per drink), $7 for 5 slices of salmon sashimi, $10 martinis, $10 pints of beer, $11 classic cocktails, and the promise of an awesome view of Orchard Road! I arrived a little after eight and missed it - but it's okay. I'd love to be back.

Unique, quality ramen!  Smile May 12, 2014

It's the kind of place where you won't go if you aren't searching for it. Suzuki Ramen Bar is located at the street behind the riverside lane that connects Clarke Quay and Raffles Place. I liked how it feels like a hole in a back alley, almost like a time portal. One particular striking feature of this ramen bar is their special varieties of ramen soup bases offered. The first time I was here I tried their White Tonkotsu Ramen, but this time I spied their unique Amber & Sakura Pink soup bases which they only sold 10 bowls every night for the dinner crowd.
Choices for the lightness/ oiliness/ strength of the soup were also available on the menu to ensure your ramen is in its optimum form for your satisfaction.

The Amber Tonkotsu Ramen bowl ($14.90++) was a hybrid between curry powder and the usual ramen tonkotsu soup base. While it could pass off as a really yummy curry powder instant noodles mix, the best part about this is that it actually isn't too spicy and the wholebodied curry flavour hits right on the spot.

Sakura Pink Ramen bowl ($14.90++) was my pick of the night, well because it was seafood-base with shrimp paste and crab flavours. Okay not really, I picked it because it sounded fanciful and curiosity got the better of me.

The soup base was flavourful and interesting with the interjection of shrimp and prawn essences, definitely thick enough to satisfy any ramen craving! Bonus points for the springy and thin ramen noodles too. The ramen noodles serving is larger than usual bowls and I had a little difficulty finishing it.

There was an option to choose between fatty pork layer or the shoulder meat, and I chose the latter... it was easy to tear, not too tender but was really yummy too! Suzuki Ramen Bar is quite the understated ramen places in Singapore, with their wide variety of ramen soup base choices and quality servings, they should be more popular.

Tom's Palette remains my number one ice-cream place in Singapore after so long. Their ice-cream consistency, thickness, richness, sweetness just blends together into one wholesome cup. No overpriced ice-cream here, and totally value-for-money for the sort of quality you get. $3 for a small cup of two flavours if you flash your student card (10% off), that's amazing right? Granny's favourite + rum & raisin was my first cup of Tom's Palette ice-cream, and this was what my friend ordered! There was a moment of #throwback there. This combo is still as kickass, and even possibly even better than before. I tried another different combo with Blueberry Cheesecake and Green Tea, and honestly, how can anything go wrong here?

In case of any additional worries, you can just ask them to let you try the flavours first. They are totally cool about it, so go ahead.
