Old-school themed cafe Smile Apr 23, 2014

The first thing that will catch your eye when you approach The Provision Shop is the row of small colourful chairs lined at the corridor. As you enter the place, you will see these colours on the wall; be it on paintings, on their furniture or their tableware. They give the place a vintage modern chic feel in contrast with the white and black-tiled walls.

I like how all the slightest details in the cafe are consistent with the theme of restaurant. We ordered a Long Black ($4) and Flat White ($5). The coffee was served in old school cups. We found the coffee quite aromatic. The coffee price is quite reasonable I would say. For non-coffee lovers, The Provision Shop also serve up alcoholic beverages such as beer and cider as well as non-alcoholic floats and teas.
Belinda Perogis ($6) was chosen because it looked interesting from the menu. It is actually Polish dumplings filled with mashed potato and cheese. Something like a gnocchi or a tortellini. It is topped with sour cream, bacon and onions. If you would like extra toppings, you can add $1. This dish was served hot. Personally, I adore anything with cheese and thus, I quite like this dish.
The Provision Shop also offers other hot food such as sandwiches, pastas and more. I think there is probably something for everyone.
Overall, I would say The Provision Shop scores in its ambience as well as it's consistency in theme. I guess service is something that can be brushed up on as a warm and welcoming service adds another pull factor to the cafe.

Good coffee, good ambience Smile Apr 18, 2014

Percolate has a small seating capacity, probably enough for only 20? The walls of the cafe are painted in Black and White with wood-textured furniture. I like the vibe of the cafe - simple, small and cozy. As it is still a relatively new cafe, we were quite happy that the cafe was not crowded. It is definitely difficult to find an empty cafe these days where you can simply just sit, read a book and chill the afternoon away.

We decided to try out two of their desserts that were offered. Besides desserts, Percolate also serves up simple sandwiches for those who are looking for something savoury.

Chocolate Espresso Tart was one of our choices. My friend really like this tart. The tart is not very sweet which was good. I like the crust of the tart whereby its quantity was quite balanced with the Chocolate Espresso filling in it.

The coffee was good and strong. We all agreed that the coffee was affordable and value-for-money. The coffee comes in either black or white; hot or cold. The white coffee comes in two sizes (3oz or 5oz). Hot coffee are priced below $4 and teas are priced at $5.

I saw two other patrons ordered Iced Chocolate and was so tempted just by the look of the drink. Look at it below! The iced chocolate has chocolate infused in the milk. It was appropriately sweet with the right amount of chocolate. I like that it can be refreshing and chocolatey at the same time.

Overall, I enjoyed my time at Percolate. We also appreciated that the staff were very friendly. One of them even waved goodbye to us when we left the place. I would definitely be back at Percolate for its coffee and warm ambience! Would love to try their bundt cakes the other time round.

For full review and more photos, please visit http://thumbsforfood.blogspot.sg/2014/03/stew-kuche.html

Stew Kuche is situated in a coffee shop near Queensway shopping centre and Ikea. The coffee shop has other cool stalls such as Brown Sugar by Eskimo and Deburg burgers. It is definitely worth your time to check out this new generation coffee shop!

They have a wide variety of beer at affordable prices. There is a draft beer counter as well!

German Pork Knuckle:
Whole Knuckle- $25
Half Knuckle- $15

This is really good and delicious! The skin is sooooo crispy and savory that you just cannot have enough of it. I think if you have a huge appetite, half a knuckle is probably just right for you. Or else, you can probably share it with someone! The meat is really tender as well and it goes so well with the skin! It comes with achar and mashed potatoes as well. Pork knuckle is a must-try here!

Value-for-money Japanese Sets Smile Mar 02, 2014

For full review and more photos, please visit http://thumbsforfood.blogspot.sg/2014/03/botan-japanese-restaurant-thumbsforfood.html

I have been to Botan on two separate occasions- once for lunch and once for dinner. On both times I was there, the restaurant was not packed but had a fair amount of patrons dining. I actually enjoyed the fact that the place was not overcrowded so I could dine comfortably and at my own pace.

Botan has a variety of set meals for lunch and dinner. If I did not remember wrongly, the set meals are priced the same regardless of whether you are there for lunch or dinner. Prices range from $22 to about $35.

I had the Ladies Set which is one of the more expensive sets (about $30+). It came with California Maki Roll, Chawanmushi, Sashimi, Ramen, Tempura, Salad and Icecream. This set really has a little of everything. Usually, you would think that Ladies Set is probably smaller in portion but, the Ladies Set here is otherwise.

The Chirashi Set is pretty alluring as well with not only fresh sashimi but a mixture of sides such as Oden that provides a good balance with raw sashimi. The best thing of the Chirashi Set I would say is the generous portion of roe on the rice.

The Tempura in Botan is also another must try as it is fried to perfection. Even when the tempura was not eaten piping hot, it was crisp and delicious.

Overall, I feel that Botan is a hidden gem amidst the CBD area. This place serves value-for-money, authentic and quality Japanese food. It is suitable for business dinners as well as large group gatherings. For those who are looking for a place for good Japanese food yet want to avoid the crowds, do give Botan a try!

Recommended Dish(es):  Tempura,Sashimi

Spending per head: Approximately $35(Dinner)

For full review and more photos, please visit http://thumbsforfood.blogspot.sg/2014/01/superstar-k-tanjong-pagar-thumbsforfood.html

One of the best must-haves for good barbeque meat is non other than the fire! Meat barbecued with Charcoal fire definitely makes the meat more fragrant! Superstar K also has a smoke vent directly under every barbecue pit to ensure that the place does not get overly smoky.

Patrons would have to crowd around a stove and dine. I really quite like the vibrant atmosphere of the restaurant as it resonates the ones in Korea. A tip for ladies or anyone who has bags, you can lift up the seat of the stool to reveal a compartment for you to stow your bags away to refrain them for having the barbecue smell.

Every patron will be served with their own tray of sauces and condiments. I like this concept as it is cleaner and more convenient. For those who are wondering what the onion sauce is for, you can actually dip marinated meat in it for it to enhance its flavor.

We tried their Beef as it was recommended by the staff there. We saw many tables eating their beef as well. Look at how beautifully marbled the beef is below! The good thing is also that the staff will help you cook the meat so you can happily enjoy chatting with friends whilst waiting for the meat to be done. We found the beef really quite good and juicy!

Yes, Superstar K also serves up steamed egg (for free with order of BBQ meat) ! You can ask for one refill for this as well! It is soooo good! The egg is really fluffy and delicious. Goes really well with rice!

In the middle of the picture below, that is one of the must-try in out opinion. The curded beancurd soup! It is spicy, appetising and the beancurd is really smooth! Totally appetising and delicious.

Overall, we had a great experience at Superstar K! We would recommend Superstar K for small group of 3-4 friends which we feel is most comfortable to seat around the table. I personally feel that Superstar K is quite underrated as it does serve up relatively good meat. Korean food lovers, do give this place a try! (There's another branch opened at Telok Ayer as well)
