Lunch at Lau Pa Sat Smile Dec 27, 2012
Categories : Chinese | Hawker Centre

We went to Lau Pa Sat to have our lunch. After wandering around the market pondering what to eat as there were simply too much options to choose from, I decided to settle down for a simple dish of Char Kway Teow from Lai Heng Char Kway Teow stall.

The chef, a old man who is in his 70s, was very friendly when he took my order. By the way, his Char Kway Teow is priced at $5, $6, $7. As I am only ordering it for myself, I chose the $5 option, although in my mind, I thought that $5 was a little pricier for a plate of Char Kway Teow.

Here's a photo of his stall:

His stall was quite huge as it occupied two stall size. This photo depicted the place where the chef cooked his food. On the left side is the 2nd half of his stall, which I didn't take photo. Its a pity I didn't take the photo as he had pasted numerous newspaper clippings containing accolades for his food. Also, there were some nice decorations that adored this part of the stall.

I also liked the ambience of Lau Pa Sat. It's set in a unique and vintage setting where you can see street signposts in the market itself, that pointed to different alley of Lau Pa Sat, where stalls lined up both side of the alley. Right smack in the centre of Lau Pa Sat is a stall selling drinks, desserts and fruits. Also, the ventilation had improved as it's more windy and airy now and there were many fans mounted at the top.

When the chef passed me the plate of Char Kway Teow, the first thing that wafted to my nose is the sweet and nice smell of the Char Kway Teow, that simply made my mouth salivated as I walked back to my table with my food. Another thing that struck me was that for the price of $5, which is the cheapest option available for Char Kway Teow, the serving portion for $5 was simply huge and I felt it's meant for 2 persons to share.

Here's a photo of my yummy Char Kway Teow.

Each mouthful of the Char Kway Teow was simply heavenly. The nice blend of the guo tiao, mee, the ingredients and the dark soy sauce made the Char Kway Teow tasted great. Also, although the chef used small little cockles, but he generously gave plenty of them and they go well with the guo tiao.

If you were to ask me what is the one thing that I dislike, I really can't find any to find fault with. But I would prefer if the chef uses larger size cockles instead of the small little cockles. As I am a fan of cockles and I think cockles go hand in hand with Char Kway Teow, hence bigger cockles will definitely improve my dining experience by another notch. Nonetheless, I still like the Char Kway Teow and I felt that I have a pleasant dining experience and would recommend my friends to try out his stall. On a scale of 1 to 10 with 1 as mediocre and 10 as very yummy, I would give the overall dining experience as a rating of 8.

Dinner Smile Dec 27, 2012
Categories : Noodles

As I had a craving for Beef Hor Fun, I decided to stop by Greenview Cafe for a quick dinner before heading back to office to do some overtime work. The cafe is located at a corner of Far East Plaza. It is a very plain and simple looking cafe with little decoration. Although the cafe has 2 outlets, but both outlets are small and can only accommodate a maximum of 7 tables each or lesser.

The plate of Beef Hor Fun cost me $5 and my Coke soft drink cost $1.40. In total my dinner cost $6.40. Here's a photo of my Beef Hor Fun:

The Beef Hor Fun was prepared well by the chef. It's a nice fusion of the guo tiao hor fun together with the Hor Fun gravy and the beef. Each tasted equally nice. The guo tiao hor fun has a distinct nice wok smell to it. The gravy tasted superb and wasn't that salty. Each slice of beef was evenly cooked and tasted great. Overall, I had a pleasant dining experience eating the delicious Beef Hor Fun and I had a can of Coke to go along with.

What I don't really like is the vegetables. Some of it tasted slightly raw and I don't like to eat raw vegetables. Perhaps the chef didn't want to overcook the vegetables so that he can preserve the goodness that are found in the vegetables but personally I don't like the slightly raw taste. Also it will be better if they can give more guo tiao hor fun as I felt the portion was slightly little and not filling for my stomach.

I noticed that each table has separate container to contain the green chili, red chili, chili sauce. However all the 3 containers are left exposed to the surrounding and there were no cover on each container. I felt that it is not that hygienic to leave the chili exposed to the surrounding. I would suggest or recommend the cafe owners to place a cover on each of the container so that the chili won't be exposed to the surrounding air.

I would definitely return to Greenview Cafe to eat again. On a scale of 1 to 10 with 1 as mediocre and 10 as very yummy, I would give the overall dining experience as a rating of 8 and would highly recommend my friends to try out their food as it's delicious and the price is reasonable.

Bak Kut Teh Lunch Smile Dec 27, 2012

Categories : Hawker Centre | Bak Kut Teh

My colleague and I went to Hong Lim Food Centre to have our lunch and we decided to try out the stall named Morning Bak Kut Teh as we felt that the herbal soup smelled fragrant and aromatic from afar.

Here are some photos to share with all of you:

This is a photo of the stall shop front. You can tell that this stall is hygienic as they were awarded a rating of B by National Environment Agency, which was prominently displayed on the top right hand corner of the signboard. Other than the usual Bak Kut Teh, they also offered a variety of dishes for their patrons to try. Also, I felt that their stall name is rather unique and special.

For Morning Bak Kut Teh, throughout our dining session, the tables surrounding their stall were filled with patrons that ordered from their stall. Also the entire hawker centre was fully packed with people having their lunch and as the weather was also hot, hence I don't really like my dining experience as I was perspiring while eating my Bak Kut Teh.

The ambience of the place was quite pleasant as the surrounding area of the shop were clean and hygienic.

Here's my Bak Ku Teh set meal, which cost me $5. I felt that the price was reasonable for the amount of meat portion that was given in my set meal.

Here's a close-up view of my Bak Kut Teh soup. I love the taste of the soup. It's unlike the usual traditional Bak Kut Teh soup that has a tinge of spiciness in it. The soup has a herbal taste to it and it also tasted sweet. It's so different from the usual Bak Kut Teh that I often ate, which often come with a clear soup base. The pork rib meat in my set meal tasted tender and soft. On a side note, I realized that the stall owners do help you to refill your soup base if it runs out of soup.

On a scale of 1 to 10 with 1 as mediocre and 10 as very yummy, I would give the overall dining experience as a rating of 7.

I have been hearing good comments about Boon Tong Kee chicken rice, hence decided to try it out for myself. Headed to one of their branch at MacPherson as I was around that area and decided to order the set meal for 1 person for my lunch.

Here's a photo of the restaurant shop front. This side of the restaurant is the non-air conditioned area. Although it's non-air conditioned for this section, you get to see the chef preparing your meal.

Here's another photo of the restaurant shop front. This side of the restaurant is the air-conditioned area. I decided to sit in the air-conditioned area as the weather was simply scorching hot.

I also felt the restaurant concept was interesting as they divided their restaurant into 2 sections, the air-conditioned and the non air-conditioned area. I reckon it is purposely done to cater to their restaurant patrons preference as some may not like to eat in the air conditioned environment.

Here are some more photos to share with you.

My yummy chicken rice set meal for 1 person which cost $5 in total, inclusive of 1 can of soft drink.

A close up view of the white chicken. Don't you think it looks yummy?

This outlet comes with a LCD television. Pity the television wasn't placed in a location where majority of the diners can view it. I believe only those tables that are in front of the television can watch it whereas those who are sat near the entrance or those who sat at the back of the restaurant can't really watch it due to the odd angle. I certainly can't view it properly.

There are some nice decorations hung on the wall, which coupled with the nice light balls hanging on the roof, helps to beautify the place and provide a nice dining ambiance for diners.

This is a shot of the restaurant interior. Looking at the way this restaurant was being decorated and also the choice of the tablecloth design, my first impression was that this restaurant could be selling western food. You wouldn't guess that it is selling chicken rice. Kudos to the owner who had adopted this design style. I love it. Simple and classy.

Look at the wall furnishing. It certainly looks posh and the wall also has a nice colour combination.

Overall, my experience at Boon Tong Kee was great. Although each item in my set meal looks simple enough, such as the bowl of rice, white chicken, chilli sauce & dark soy sauce, but they tasted great. I felt that even though none of the items stood out, they were all equally good and worked well in harmony to provide a satisfying chicken rice experience for me. The bowl of rice was fragrant and cooked just right for my liking. The white chicken was also prepared nicely and the meat tasted tender and goes very well with the light soy sauce. I love the feeling of the mixture of the light soy sauce and the chicken juice when I bite into the chicken meat. The experience was heavenly when you mix a little bit of the chilli and dark soy sauce to the chicken meat. For the chilli sauce, the spiciness was just nice and it has a very traditional "chicken rice" taste to it.

I am sure Boon Tong Kee would have many supporters and detractors but one thing I am sure of is if you have overseas friends who are in Singapore and they want to try out some unique Singapore dishes such as chicken rice, Boon Tong Kee is one good choice to consider as you can get to eat good chicken rice in a modern, clean and classy environment. I forgot to mention that while I was eating, soothing classical music played in the background and made my dining experience pleasant. From the restaurant setting to the soothing music, it almost made me forgot that I am not having a western meal but I am indeed having a uniquely Singapore dish, the chicken rice. On a scale of 1 to 10 with 1 as mediocre and 10 as very yummy, I would give the overall dining experience as a rating of 9.5.
