Jumbo Seafood 珍宝海鲜楼 Cry Jul 31, 2013
Categories : Seafood

I often bring my guests from overseas to this East Coast Seafood Centre as the ambience of seabreeze is perfect.

We ordered Sambal Kangkung , Steamed Bamboo Clam with Garlic and Vermicelli , Steamed HK Style Sea Bass , Herbal Drunken Prawn , Salted Baked Chicken , Chilli Crab.

Initial impression was the layer of oil around the Sambal Kangkong, however it was crunchy, has great fragrance of the chilli shrimp paste and tasted fine (despite the oil, if you are particular , just drip dry)

Steamed Bamboo Clams with strong coriander and garlic aroma, drizzled with light sauce and sesame oil. The taste of sweet shellfish and nice soft chewy texture as every bite oozes the sauces.

Succulent Hongkong style Sea bass steamed and preserved its original freshness straight from the sea (or rather, the fish tank) to your plate. Only seasoned with a bit of light soya sauce and fragrant oil (shallot/garlic) is all it takes to bring out the simple yet great dish.

Chalky and rich smell of herbs and chinese wine makes this Herbal Drunken Prawns one of my favourite dishes and soups. The prawns are very firm and crunchy, easily de-shelled signifies its unquestionable freshness.

Chilli Crab , is Jumbo’s signature and branding , the taste of the meat is sweet and scrumptious. However the biggest disappointment is , just because we didn’t order buns , it was served without the chilli crab sauce (which usually can accompany other dishes as a dipping) and staff refused my simple request as if they wanted to “save on sauces” for customers who ordered their mantou (buns). As this scenario embarrassed me infront of my guests, I would never return here again and they have lost a regular patron. I won't miss any of the food here because there's better elsewhere.

Spending per head: Approximately $45(Dinner)

Arirang Korean Restaurant Cry Jul 30, 2013

Categories : Korean | BBQ

Lately I’ve been watching too many korean dramas till addicted to their food (kpop), me and hubby went for Korean BBQ buffet. This place is small (for a bbq place) and cozy, the staff was a little sluggish and grumpy.

As there's a time limit to eat here, we have to order our food randomly without really taking much time to slowly read and decide which is more worth it and enjoy the dining process.

The side appetizers were fresh, I liked the kimchi as it was very spicy and crunchy. Ordered some dishes from the hot food menu, kimchi fried rice was a little wet , toppoki's sauce was flavourful and gooey however the rice cake was a little hard tasted as if undercooked. Korean stir fried glass noodles were springy and has nice "wok hei" smell.

Overall all marinated meat is average, nothing fantastic and it almost seems they served rather slowly on purpose to use up the 2 hours while outputting minimal meat. I think all in all the most nerve wrecking part for me is the thought of eating under a time limit like I'm being pressured while doing an "eating mission" on "running man" and I'm not going to win any gold upon completion.

There’s more negativity in this experience than those tragic dramas I’ve watched. I probably won’t return unless positive reviews about it, all best for them.

A good friend got promoted and told me he is treating me to anything I want to eat (haha got hammered). Heard about this place a lot so I chose to dine here.
This place is very modern and “atas” (high class) looking, the service is efficient but somehow the servers look expressionless, this is weird coming from a hotel background. We ordered Hainanese Chicken Rice, and when it came, to my disappointment, the rice (although hot), doesn’t have any of those chicken rice fragrance which is the basics. And the Chicken was cold and tough. The only thing that had flavour was the chilli and dark sauces.

$30? What a waste! We went dutch because I’m not going to let my friend off easy.

Breeks Cafe Cry Jul 30, 2013

Categories : High Tea | Halal | Kids-Friendly

We were heading for Batam, so didn't know what to eat before boarding ferry, walked pass Breeks and saw that there wasn't a queue so give it a try. The place was neat and clean. We ordered Grilled Dory with Spaghetti.

Grilled Dory fish is too salty for my liking. Pasta is overcooked and the topping mushroom sauces is also not so fantastic. Portion of vegetables was also little. Regret.

Forget It ~ Cry Jul 29, 2013

Categories : Korean | Buffet | Korean BBQ

Saw $19.90 promotion for authentic Korean BBQ buffet on groupon and bought it. Hidden along Mackenzie Road, this dark looking restaurant was found.
With very limited kind of marinated meat we felt that it’s really not worth it. Chicken bulgogi with pepper paste looked really dull and tasted really salty; pork bulgogi with original korean seasoning is a joke, dark red in color but totally bland and only can taste of instant chili powder. Seaweed soup is warm but has a slimy texture and bitter after taste. The only thing I ate most is doboki (spicy rice cake) it’s spicy and flavorful compared to the rest of the food. Will not return here again. sad
